Chocolate Toffee Bars

These chocolate toffee bars were three things: 1) lovingly simple, 2) fantastically delicious and 3) perfect for your waistline. Ok, so not really on #3, but it felt good to pretend for a minute. These bars are definitely going in my tried-and-true – perfect for a potluck or summer BBQ, they are sure to get rave reviews. They are chewy and dense, with a hint of caramel and loaded with toffee and chocolate. Perfect, just perfect.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, soft
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts (optional – I left these out)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 package toffee bits, divided

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9X13 pan with aluminum foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Whisk together flour, salt and brown sugar. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture is crumbly. Add eggs and mix well with a wooden spoon or your hands. Mix in 1 1/2 cups of the chocolate chips and the 1 cup nuts. Set aside 1 1/2 cups of the dough. Press the remaining dough into prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes.
  2. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the crust. Top with all but 1/3 of the toffee bits. Place pieces of remaining dough over the top. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup chips.
  3. Bake for 25-30 more minutes, or till golden brown. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup toffee bits on top. Cool completely before serving.

Kim Fix – thank you for your comment. I am delighted to hear that you have made recipes that you have liked from here. I’m so glad! You and I might be kind of close here in WI – we live in the Green Bay area.

  2. Kim Fix says:

These Bars were wonderful! I have to tell you I have tried so many things on your blog. All are just as equally wonderful! I get excited when I see new things on your blog! Welcome to Wi! I use to live in Madison, but now live 25 minutes North of there.

  3. Cindy says:

loaded is right–yowza! they’re gorgeous bars, melanie, and you don’t have to convince me of their deliciousness. i can just snip open a bag of toffee bits and pour them into my mouth. :)

  7. Melanie says:

Melissa – too funny because I can’t seem to remember how to spell Milwaukee consistently either. I’ll for sure let you know if we are ever in your brother’s neck of the woods. It would be really nice to have instant friends out there – too bad we won’t be living closer to Milwaukee (we will be a couple hours away).

Hope you love the tortellini (and seriously, are you feeling ok? I linked over to your family blog and saw your nightmarish mono thing).

  8. Hornsfan says:

The worst thing about mono… I can’t even choke down the good stuff! I threatened to put a tube into my own stomach just so I could pretend like I was enjoying eating. Actually I think I’m getting better. Some slimy pasta should go down the hatch no problem.

  37. Sara says:

These look so good. As soon as I discovered them I had to make them! They are in the oven right now!!!!
But I realized I didn’t add the salt!! I see it listed as an ingredient but in the directions it doesn’t say to add it. I’m sure it’s with the flour and brown sugar, but I was just reading along la la la, do this, mix that and it wasn’t until cleaning time I realized I never put the salt in!!
Think it will still be tasty??? : )

    • Mel says:

Sara – thanks for the heads up on this recipe. I hope the bars were still tasty despite the no-salt. I’m guessing they probably taste like they are missing something but with all the other good stuff, hopefully they are still tasty.

  38. Kelsey says:

I have made these a couple times now and everybody loves them!!!

  39. Devan says:

I made these today as a study break from finals, and everyone loved them! I added pretzels and a caramel drizzle on top, and left them in the fridge for a few hours. All of those flavors- my mouth could hardly handle it!

  40. Robyn says:

I made these today and they were INCREDIBLE! Thanks so much for the amazing recipe!

  41. anickh says:

i started baking when i was like 5. not even kidding. This was one of the 1st cookies/bars i ever made (because it was on the back of the “hersheys toffee chips” bag. Before the internet, “back-of-bag-recipes” were used a lot more frequently) and i used to make this one all the time because its so good!! and i also never used the nuts. Nuts ruin cookies. Hershey’s calls this “Rich Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars”
