Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars
These chocolate toffee bars were three things: 1) lovingly simple, 2) fantastically delicious and 3) perfect for your waistline. Ok, so not really on #3, but it felt good to pretend for a minute.
These bars are definitely going in my tried-and-true – perfect for a potluck or summer BBQ, they are sure to get rave reviews.
They are chewy and dense, with a hint of caramel and loaded with toffee and chocolate. Perfect, just perfect.
Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars
Ingredients
- 2 ⅓ cup flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅔ cup brown sugar
- ¾ cup softened butter
- 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
- 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts, optional – I left these out
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 package toffee bits, divided
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9X13 pan with aluminum foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Whisk together flour, salt and brown sugar. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture is crumbly. Add eggs and mix well with a wooden spoon or your hands. Mix in 1 1/2 cups of the chocolate chips and the 1 cup nuts. Set aside 1 1/2 cups of the dough. Press the remaining dough into prepared pan. Bake for 10 minutes.
- Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the crust. Top with all but 1/3 of the toffee bits. Place pieces of remaining dough over the top. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup chips.
- Bake for 25-30 more minutes, or till golden brown. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup toffee bits on top. Cool completely before serving.

Where do you actually find this recipe? I only see pictures.
Sorry about that, Jennifer! That recipe was updated a few years later and has a different posting. Here it is: https://www.melskitchencafe.com/chocolate-chip-toffee-bars-2/
Hi!
Wondering what size can of sweetened condensed milk you use for this recipe.
I know in other recipes (death by 7-layer chocolate, for example) you use a 14 oz can. I’m not sure if it’s just where I shop, but all I can seem to find are 10oz cans. Maybe it’s a Canada thing? Hmmm. I know it’s a 4 oz difference, but would either work here?
Thanks!
It is a 14 ounce can for this recipe, also. You could try it with a 10 ounce can, haven’t tried it myself so not sure if the 4 ounces will make a difference – probably make the bars a little less chewy.
Thanks for your quick reply!
I’ll keep looking for those 14oz cans but might try it with a 10oz can in the mean time… I always love a good cookie recipe that’s good for my waistline! 😉
i started baking when i was like 5. not even kidding. This was one of the 1st cookies/bars i ever made (because it was on the back of the “hersheys toffee chips” bag. Before the internet, “back-of-bag-recipes” were used a lot more frequently) and i used to make this one all the time because its so good!! and i also never used the nuts. Nuts ruin cookies. Hershey’s calls this “Rich Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars”

I made these today and they were INCREDIBLE! Thanks so much for the amazing recipe!
I made these today as a study break from finals, and everyone loved them! I added pretzels and a caramel drizzle on top, and left them in the fridge for a few hours. All of those flavors- my mouth could hardly handle it!
I have made these a couple times now and everybody loves them!!!
Thanks, Kelsey!
These look so good. As soon as I discovered them I had to make them! They are in the oven right now!!!!
But I realized I didn’t add the salt!! I see it listed as an ingredient but in the directions it doesn’t say to add it. I’m sure it’s with the flour and brown sugar, but I was just reading along la la la, do this, mix that and it wasn’t until cleaning time I realized I never put the salt in!!
Think it will still be tasty??? : )
Sara – thanks for the heads up on this recipe. I hope the bars were still tasty despite the no-salt. I’m guessing they probably taste like they are missing something but with all the other good stuff, hopefully they are still tasty.
Susan, thanks! I’m so glad you liked these bars. I agree, they are one in a million.
These brownies are terrific…nothing like them EVER!
Wow! Yum!
Oh see, now you’re just playing dirty, how is anyone supposed to be able to resist these. Delicious!
These sound right up my alley! I’ll report back once I make them!
Lovely, lovely, lovely!!!!
These bars look so fab!
My mouth is watering looking at these. I made the samoa bar cookies over the weekend and everyone loved them!
When I was a kid at summer camp every day I’d get a Mountain Dew and a Heath bar at canteen.
I know. Makes my teeth ache to think about it.
I still love them both. But separately!
These bars look great thanks for sharing.

I made these this week for a very special lunch. They were DIVINE!! My niece calls them “Addiction Bars”!! We couldn’t keep out of them. This recipe is a treasure!!
The worst thing about mono… I can’t even choke down the good stuff! I threatened to put a tube into my own stomach just so I could pretend like I was enjoying eating. Actually I think I’m getting better. Some slimy pasta should go down the hatch no problem.
i can’t wait to try these!
Ok, YUM!! Those will be a def. try!! I made the chocolate chip cake two days ago and I don’t know if I should love you or be mad!! haha 🙂
it was wonderful, all my boys LOVED IT!
Thanks for sharing!
Shelley – I love your nieces’s nickname for these bars. So appropriate! I’m glad you liked them. Thanks for letting me know.
Cindy – thanks for checking in to let me know you liked these bars. I bet they were perfect for the fourth!
I saw these on Kara’s site too and have the recipe written and waiting to make. They look killer!
You’re really tugging at my weakness for chocolate chips lately, between this and the chocolate chip cake recipe 🙂
Melissa – too funny because I can’t seem to remember how to spell Milwaukee consistently either. I’ll for sure let you know if we are ever in your brother’s neck of the woods. It would be really nice to have instant friends out there – too bad we won’t be living closer to Milwaukee (we will be a couple hours away).
Hope you love the tortellini (and seriously, are you feeling ok? I linked over to your family blog and saw your nightmarish mono thing).
loaded is right–yowza! they’re gorgeous bars, melanie, and you don’t have to convince me of their deliciousness. i can just snip open a bag of toffee bits and pour them into my mouth. 🙂
Well, you know I loved your sweet and sour theme and I can tell already I am going to like your chocolate and toffee theme!
So they are not diet???? LOL
I made these for the fourth of July. They were such a big hit and who doesn’t love toffee! Thanks so much for the yummy recipe.
These Bars were wonderful! I have to tell you I have tried so many things on your blog. All are just as equally wonderful! I get excited when I see new things on your blog! Welcome to Wi! I use to live in Madison, but now live 25 minutes North of there.
Kim Fix – thank you for your comment. I am delighted to hear that you have made recipes that you have liked from here. I’m so glad! You and I might be kind of close here in WI – we live in the Green Bay area.
