man fly fishing

I can’t remember if we’ve had this talk before but in case I haven’t told you, Brian, my husband, loves to fish.

Like really loves to fish. As in, loves fishing the same way I love dark chocolate. Do you follow?

In fact, one of our first dates was fishing. So romantic, I know. I actually outfished Brian that day and felt very, very smug about it. My reward? Having to gut my own little fishies in the stream, which of course I pretended like I had done a million times (I had decided at that point that I wanted this guy to stick around) even though inwardly I was completely gagging and freaking out.

Here he is ready to head out on an afternoon fishing adventure. Can you see his t-shirt? Let me help you: “I’m happy when I smell like fish.”

You have no idea how true that is.

I may not get out fishing anymore like I used to (you know, the five rugrats have put a damper on my fishing hobby), but I can still hang out in a crazy comfy and clever fishing t-shirt. Our friends, Bobby and Kaleena, are helping with a relaunch of a fun and unique website: Fish or Starve. They have some very cool fishing t-shirts (and an awesome hat I just saw!). If you are looking for a unique gift for the fisherman or fisherwoman in your life, you should totally check out Fish or Starve.

I just realized for this picture I should have thrown on my fishing vest Brian gave me for Mother’s Day one year because he swore I mumbled in my sleep that I wanted one.

Right.

I always laugh because our hard drive is full of pictures like the ones above. I’m talking hundreds of pictures. They all look exactly the same to me but Brian can without hesitation recount to you every single detail of each particular fishing trip, what kind of fish he caught, how big they were, what bait he was using, how many pebbles were in the creek, etc. just by glancing at the picture. If he’s lucky, he’ll remember who he was fishing with but he always remembers the fish. Always.

The boys are catching the fishing spirit, especially when they can “help” catch behemoth salmon like this. Thankfully I long ago relinquished the fish gutting duties and have since set down firm rules that there will be no fish guts in my kitchen sink thankyouverymuch.
