Snapshot Saturday: Fish or Starve
I can’t remember if we’ve had this talk before but in case I haven’t told you, Brian, my husband, loves to fish.
Like really loves to fish. As in, loves fishing the same way I love dark chocolate. Do you follow?
In fact, one of our first dates was fishing. So romantic, I know. I actually outfished Brian that day and felt very, very smug about it. My reward? Having to gut my own little fishies in the stream, which of course I pretended like I had done a million times (I had decided at that point that I wanted this guy to stick around) even though inwardly I was completely gagging and freaking out.
Here he is ready to head out on an afternoon fishing adventure. Can you see his t-shirt? Let me help you: “I’m happy when I smell like fish.”
You have no idea how true that is.
I may not get out fishing anymore like I used to (you know, the five rugrats have put a damper on my fishing hobby), but I can still hang out in a crazy comfy and clever fishing t-shirt. Our friends, Bobby and Kaleena, are helping with a relaunch of a fun and unique website: Fish or Starve. They have some very cool fishing t-shirts (and an awesome hat I just saw!). If you are looking for a unique gift for the fisherman or fisherwoman in your life, you should totally check out Fish or Starve.
I just realized for this picture I should have thrown on my fishing vest Brian gave me for Mother’s Day one year because he swore I mumbled in my sleep that I wanted one.
Right.
I always laugh because our hard drive is full of pictures like the ones above. I’m talking hundreds of pictures. They all look exactly the same to me but Brian can without hesitation recount to you every single detail of each particular fishing trip, what kind of fish he caught, how big they were, what bait he was using, how many pebbles were in the creek, etc. just by glancing at the picture. If he’s lucky, he’ll remember who he was fishing with but he always remembers the fish. Always.
The boys are catching the fishing spirit, especially when they can “help” catch behemoth salmon like this. Thankfully I long ago relinquished the fish gutting duties and have since set down firm rules that there will be no fish guts in my kitchen sink thankyouverymuch.
Just wanted to say that you two are completely adorable! π
Oh Mel….I just love you! You seriously make me laugh out loud almost every day…since I HAVE to check the blog every single day to make sure I know what to cook for the week:) When are you coming to Idaho again…we would love to see you!
Is it weird that we are good friends and I had no idea about this love of fishing? π
I love this post! We are a fishing family, and have a tradition of taking a fly fishing vacation every summer. One of the reasons I love to fly fish is that it requires your total attention and you can’t think about anything else. Your chance to hook the fish happens in an instant, and if your mind wanders for even a second you will miss the strike and lose the fish. Those photos of Brian and his fish are awesome!, Mel! I’ve never fished for salmon. Tell Brian I’m jealous!
Ahhh! Good! My husband isn’t an avid fisherman, but just returned from Alaska with salmon and halibut. PLEASE give me good ideas how to cook them–we love to eat them, I just usually order them in a restaurant! Let’s have a fish week! (And when I say “Let’s” I mean you!!) Thank you for the fun blog. I’ve never commented before, but my daughter and I use your recipes all the time. My sister, Kate, is an old roommate of yours–she hooked us up to you.
My first date with my husband was target practice – he had a new scope for his gun that he wanted to try. Our fishing date came several weeks later:)
My dad & husband are both avid fly fishermen so when we got married, one of the first things my dad thought I needed was my own vest, waders, & boots and they both took me out shopping for them! Isn’t that what every new bride needs?! π
OH my goodness! Where did you get his shirt? I have a 13 yr old that practically lives on a sport fishing boat in San Diego (he gets to go for free if he helps out scrubbing the decks and such). He reeks of fish all the time. I swear it’s like perfume to him! I need to get him that shirt, oh, and maybe he can be adopted by your husband?! Love love love all your recipes. Thank you so much!
I love this t-shirt!
Thanks Melanie! The shirts look good on you guys! Like us on fb and there is a $10 off code on our page
Too funny. My husband is fishing as I type!
We just moved into a new house near his favorite fishing spots and as we drive around exploring our new town, he narrates the history of a lifetime of catches as we pass by memorable fishing landmarks…fishing companions, who caught (or lost) what on which day, weather conditions, size of fish in feet or inches, native or hatchery, who cooked it and how they cooked it….oy vey! I do hope he brings a salmon home for dinner tonight.
Wow – the size of the fish in that last photo!
I didn’t think there was anyone else out there on this planet that liked to fish more than my father and my two sons!! These t-shirts will be great gifts!! Thanks for showing them off!
You guys are the cutest couple!! You are so tiny to be such a great cook!!
I think our husband’s are soul mates; except my husband’s fishing shirt is kind of offensive. π You are a better woman than I since I have never been willing to gut the fish. Great post. We just love those snapshot Saturdays!
Hi Melanie! I totally know a fishing lover and love your husband’s shirt in this post. I went to the website to see if I could find one but couldn’t, and there is no where really that I can find to ask the sellers. Would you mind putting me in touch with them to see if I can get a shirt like your husband’s. I would appreciate it! Thanks!
Ok…I don’t know why, but I loved this post! You are such a great writer and the pictures are amazing. I don’t know how you stay so skinny with all the food you make! I’m totally jealous. Thanks for a fantastic Snapshot Saturday post!
You mumbled in your sleep that you wanted one…that just made me laugh so hard. π
Sweet! I can’t decide which is better — your writing skills or your recipes or your photography skills?? What a wonderful piece of writing to thoroughly enjoy at my kitchen counter as I’m preparing to make that creamy, nutritional zucchini, spinach and basil soup you posted this week! Love the t-shirts — you a mother of 5 look to be 24 years old — pretty on the outside and beautiful on the inside. May you, Brian, and “the little rugrats” create many special “fishing stories” together to be shared as special, fun memories at the supper table and hopefully from these experiences, many fish recipes will jump off the pages of your blog into your followers’ recipe files. π
I can relate!!!! My hubby LOVES to fish. I knew when I married him what a priority it was. He goes into withdrawal symptoms if he hasn’t fish in awhile. We have a chest freezer in the garage overflowing with varieties of fish.
I love to fish with my husband too, but no thank you when it comes to cleaning or eating the fish! Thanks for sharing!
I so can relate. Although, my husband’s hobby is golfing and that tended to be quite a few of our dates. I thought if we survived him teaching me how to golf then he must be pretty special (I was not a very good student π ) So great you can support his hobby π
