500+ Audiobook Recommendations
I listen to audiobooks all.the.time when I’m in the kitchen recipe testing, making food for my family, or just baking for fun. It is also my favorite entertainment while driving and on walks!
Recently, I asked my Instagram audience for their most-loved audiobook recommendations. I received thousands of responses!
And since hundreds of you asked for me to share, here you go! Below is a list of the audiobooks that were recommended.

The * indicates books that were recommended more than 20 times (other books were recommended multiple times, as well, but not as often as the books marked with an asterisk).
Disclaimer: I haven’t read all the books on this list and so I can only recommend this list with reservations. Do your own research to decide if the content of the books is right for you. UPDATE: I’ve bolded the books below that I’ve read and recommend.

- *Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
- *Everything is Tuberculosis
- *Flavia de Luce Mystery Series
- *From Scratch by Lembi Locke
- *Frozen River (Mel’s review: 3.5/5 I have mixed feelings about this one; the story was interesting but the audiobook felt like it was a modern day novel – the way the characters spoke and sometimes acted – instead of being set in the 1700’s. Content warning: discusses rape and has a few gruesome/violent scenes)
- *Go as a River (Mel’s review: 3/5 I really wanted to love this book, but there were so many unbelievable elements (for me), that I had a hard time giving the rest of the book a fair chance)
- *Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

- *Sunrise on the Reaping
- *The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife
- *The Dutch House read by Tom Hanks (Mel’s review: 3.5/5 I recommend this book, for sure, but it is a slow-paced read and may not be for everyone – the story was interesting but I wouldn’t list it as one of my favorite books of all time)
- *The Favorites by Layne Fargo (Mel’s review: 3/5 the subject matter was fascinating – ice dancing and Olympic dreams – but I felt like the story dragged on and on and by the end, I really didn’t care what happened to most of the rather unlikeable characters. Content warning: quite a bit of language and some sexual content)

- *The Nightingale (Mel’s review: 5/5 it’s been years since I read this book, but it remains a favorite. The weaving of stories/history is unmatched, and it’s one of the few books that had me crying at the end)
- *The Second Life of Murielle West
- *The Small and the Mighty (Mel’s review: 5/5 the stories encapsulated in this book should be known to the whole world – such an inspiring read. Disclaimer: I read this one, didn’t listen to it)
- *The Things We Cannot Say
- *The Thursday Murder Club
- *The Unmaking of June Farrow (Mel’s review: 3.5/5 this book has a very slow start. I stopped and started it multiple times. About halfway, it really gets going, and has a good story arc. The time travel was a bit mind bending to me and I couldn’t rationalize some of the loose ends, but I enjoyed the story for the most part)
- *The Wedding Dress Sewing Circles
- *The Women (Mel’s review: 3/5 I’m in the shocking minority of people who didn’t love this book, so I’ll just say that most people will love this one, but I didn’t – for multiple reasons that I’ve waxed poetic about on Instagram, which has led to a lot of hatemail 😜)

Read Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry– especially with your daughter! It is fantastic. And the author is the sweetest little lady!
The House in the Cerulean Sea has a strong agenda to make authority figures look evil or bad, make inclusion and non-judgemental ideas seem more important than good vs bad, and pormotes gay love stories as ideal. Just a fair warning in case this is not your ideal book as well. You could save yourself some valuable listening time.
Your takeaway is tragic. This is a story about rejecting the idea that you are inherently evil just because of who you are. This story could be used to help people with disabilities, with chronic illnesses, with neurodivergence, and if, for any reason, you don’t fit what society deems the “model citizen”. Yes, there is a gay couple in the story but it NEVER once tried to say that way of loving someone is ideal. Representation matters and that is what the author accomplishes. It is a beautifully written story of outcasts finding love and acceptance.
Wow! Wow! Thanks Mel!
Thank you so much for this list. I am also an audiobook and podcast listener. They help me knock things out!
I am curious, what books would be in your top 10 to recommend?
Hi Dana! That’s a tough question, but here are a few that I’ve listened to and enjoyed from this list:
-Beneath a Scarlet Sky (fabulous true story set in WWII – remarkable story telling)
-A Man Called Ove and Anxious People (both by Frederik Backman – I really like his writing and how he can weave a story)
-The Small and the Mighty (non-fiction but fascinating stories)
-James by Percival Everett (one of the best books I read/listened to last year for sure – I was put off by it being a retelling of Huckleberry Finn because I don’t remember enjoying that classic book much – but it FAR exceeded my expectations)
-The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society (clever writing and great story)
-The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
-The Giver of Stars (both this book and the Troublesome Creek book are about the traveling packhorse librarians and I LOVED both books)
-The Lovely War (such great narration – full cast!)
-Remarkably Bright Creatures (I adored this story and the narration was spot on)
-As You Wish (if you like The Princess Bride movie, this non-fiction book is so endearing about the making of the movie – I loved it)
-I really enjoy Susanna Kearsley books, and most of hers on audiobook are realyl good – same with Kate Morton
Link for the apron please!
Hi, Jacqueline – my sister made this apron for me, but there are similar ones online if you google “wrap aprons” – one of my favorites is from World Market.
