Friday Thoughts: A Celebration, Four Questions, and A Few Favorite Things
It’s a really busy, crazy time of year, and I’m not sure anyone has extra minutes to read a silly Friday Thoughts post, but I wanted to check in on just a few things!
First, a celebration
I’ve mentioned this in my email updates and on social media, as well, but I can’t let the moment pass by without saying it here, too: MY BLOG TURNS 18 THIS WEEK!
It’s kind of unbelievable. And I know I’m a broken record, but I am so grateful you are all here. 💗 I wouldn’t still be sharing my most-loved recipes with you if I didn’t have such amazing support. This really is the best little place on the internet (in my humble opinion 😉).
What started as a free, humble, hobby blog on blogspot.com (raise your hand if you remember the mykitchencafe.blogspot.com days 👋🏼) is now a large website that has grown in so many ways:
- The first recipe was published in December 2007 ➡️ now my site has close to 2,000 recipes.
- My mom and sister were the only ones who read my blog at first ➡️ now over a million people visit each month.
- I never dreamed I’d actually publish a cookbook and that people would buy it ➡️ now I do have a published cookbook that has sold tens of thousands of copies.
- I had three kids ages three and under when I hit publish on the first recipe ➡️ now I have five kids ages 21 to 13.
- I was living in Wisconsin when my blog started ➡️ now we live in Idaho (by way of Minnesota and Utah!).
Ready for a few *then* and *now* pictures?
(You guys, I actually remember thinking the close up angle on that lasagna was so photographically powerful 🫣🫣)
I can’t believe my kids think it’s ok to grow up and leave me. 😭 I know 18 years is a long time, but when I see the evolution of how my kids have grown up during the life of this blog…it tugs on my heart strings like crazy.
And now a moment of silence for some of the old logo variations my blog went through before I finally earned a little bit of revenue and hired a professional to do the work. 🤣
I think we should plan a big celebration for the Mel’s Kitchen Cafe 20 year birthday in 2027, what do you think? Like, can we all cram in my kitchen and chat over cookies and hot chocolate? Messy buns and joggers??
Yes, that is my kind of celebration. Thank you for being here, friends. My life is better with you in it. 💗💗
Second, a few questions
- How are you holding up?
- Is your holiday shopping done?
- Do you have travel plans for the upcoming holidays or are you staying home?
- Are you finding ways to enjoy this season outside of the craziness?
That last question is constantly my holiday life goal.
My current status: I have a lot of shopping already done and packages already sent off to family and friends that live away. But there are a few little stocking stuffer-type things to be purchased (and nothing is wrapped yet).
I asked my kids (only two at home this year 😢) which holiday traditions they wanted to continue and which they didn’t care about with the intention to get rid of anything extra that we were doing out of traditional obligation. It was really enlightening! Surprisingly they still wanted to decorate gingerbread (going the Costco gingerbread kit route this year rather than homemade gingerbread like we usually do and feel really good about that).
(Here’s a flashback from 10 years ago to show you just how seriously we take decorating homemade gingerbread creations around here 😜🤣)
We’ll, of course, also make a bazillion cheeseballs to give out to neighbors and friends (last year, I was tired and we opted for an easy, non-food gift…but lots of people expressed displeasure and texted asking when cheeseballs would be back 😜).
And this week, we are going to visit the Light the World Giving Machines and walk around the lights at a fun city-center display near us.
➡️➡️ What are some of your favorite December traditions??
Third, a few favorite recommendations
I know I already published my gift guides for the holiday season, but I wanted to share a few additional recommendations that I’m loving right now!
- With my aging neck and back issues, this tilting puzzle board has been a game-changer. My mom had a version when we visited for Thanksgiving, and I immediately ordered one! We already put together this puzzle on it, and it was perfect.
- Can you handle a couple more game recs?
- We LOVE trivia games, and this general knowledge trivia set is so fun (there are a lot of different sets of these with different themes).
- This game was a hit at Thanksgiving! (I’m gifting it to several families this year.) It’s a cross between Phase 10 and Rummikub with some unique rules, and we’ve been playing it nonstop.
- This flat whisk (that twists into a full whisk) is brilliantly designed to save space in a utensil drawer, but I love it because it also doesn’t scratch nonstick pans. It isn’t quite as sturdy as my wire whisks, so it’s best for thinner batters and ingredients (and it can be used flat or full).
- In my never-ending quest to get enough fiber (literally a full-time job), I was religiously eating chia seeds in my morning smoothies or in yogurt. I recently replaced my daily chia seed intake with these basil seeds (have you heard of them?). They have nearly double the fiber and rehydrate MUCH faster than chia seeds. P.S.: they don’t taste like basil. I usually mix them in a smoothie or in yogurt (when they’re rehydrated, they are much more robust than chia seeds – they have the texture of tapioca pearls in tapioca pudding).
- My sister has been extolling the virtues of bar shampoo for months, and I finally tried it. Wow, it has made such a huge difference in my aging/somewhat-thinning hair! I’ve been using this bar shampoo and conditioner, and appreciate how my hair feels so much thicker and less brittle. I’m late to the game on everything – wish I had started using it sooner!
- I know these jeans have been making the rounds on social media, but I wanted to order them to really see if they lived up to the hype, especially with the more reasonable price. Yep, can confirm. I now have them in three lengths and three colors. They are basically the only jeans I’m wearing right now – so comfortable and while stretchy, they don’t lose their shape and become sloppy throughout the day. They come in four different lengths. I am 5’4″ (shorter torso, slightly longer legs) and I have the 30″ length in Seaside blue (they hit right below my ankles) and the 32″ length in Frosted Blue and Black (just so good with chunky boots).
A quick last note
If you’re subscribed to my email list, you may have noticed over the last few months that I’ve been including a few more short, personal, life update/notes in those emails. They fall at the end of the emails so that people who are just here for the food (totally valid!) don’t get bothered by them.
I love feeling connected to you and what’s going on in your lives, and those little updates give me a chance to hear from you, too (hit reply on the emails, and your response comes right to me!).
Because I’ve been including more of those notes in my emails (and on Instagram), it kind of makes these Friday Thoughts posts feel a bit redundant (which is partly why I’ve been publishing less Friday Thoughts posts). Over the next few months, I’ll figure out a rhythm of the best way (and how much) to share. If you have any feedback, leave it below in the comments! ⬇️⬇️
I have one more new recipe going up next Monday. I think I’m more excited about it than any other recipe I’ve posted this month – it is wildly yummy!
After that, I’m going to take a little time off from publishing new recipes to really soak up some time with my family, but I’ll be back the week after Christmas with a fabulous new appetizer recipe and a look at the most popular recipes this year! (And I’ll definitely be checking in on emails and answering recipe questions in the comments during the break.)
I hope you have the merriest of holiday seasons. I have the privilege of teaching the children at church songs each Sunday. The last few weeks, as I’ve heard their sweet, beautiful voices singing about Jesus Christ’s birth and praising Him for the gifts He freely gives us, I have felt His love so purely and so intensely. I am grateful, now and always, for the unparalleled gift of His birth, life, and resurrection. May His love and lasting peace find you this holiday season. ❤️
Keep your Friday Thoughts! A while back you recommended I read The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion. I did, and LOVED them. Recently she came out with audio books. I’m on book three. The narrator does a better job with the voices than I did in my head. Ha.
I decided to start my New Years Resolution early this year. I haven’t touched facebook in five days. Instead I’ve filled my time with books, baking, reading recipes, doing puzzles, listening to the lovely voice reading the nkjv on the Bible app, and listening to klove. I feel good about this goal.
I hope your Christmas was merry and bright!
Love your sweater. Mind telling me where you got it?
Mel! I have for sure been here since the blogspot days. I also started a blog around the same time and because I was living in Hershey I named it adventures of chocolate girl. I got a random comment from a random stranger and was like nope. I’m out 😂 glad you didn’t get intimidated by random strangers commenting on your blog. I love you and everything you make. We had baked Christmas eggs this morning mmm mmmm.
It’s wild to look back at your family pictures and realize mine have changed in much the same way in 18 years – from a 2-year-old + a newborn in 2007 to 7 kids ages 5 to 20 now! Makes me teary to think about it! So much living packed into those 18 years!
I’m in for the 20-year party – you should do one in Idaho and one in Utah and I’ll come to the Utah one. Messy buns and joggers sound just perfect. We can all bring our favorite recipe and eat and laugh our hearts out.
Thank you for sharing your life and talents with us all these years! You are my go-to recipe inspiration and I plan on giving my own kids your cookbook before they leave home since so many of our “family” recipes are really yours 🙂
Merry Christmas, Mel! I would LOVE to get my hands on a copy of your cookbook!!! Will you be offering additional copies for order soon?
Hi Jo – I’m hoping to do a reprint and get more cookbooks in stock early next spring. I’m sorry they are sold out!
Mel, Congratulations on 18 years! I have been a longtime reader of your blog and devoted recipe user. I love how you have shared so many landmarks of your life with us; seeing how your family has grown, sharing your health and healing journey from skin cancer and building a online community that feels like family is no small feat. Your honesty, humor and grace come across so easily and although we don’t personally know one another, I feel like you are my friend.
Thank you for all you do and a very Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas to you and your family! I’m so grateful for you and all the time and love you put into your wonderful blog. I’ve been following along for 12 years now and you are my main go to always!
Another suggestion for fiber to try out if you’re interested. Have you tried acacia fiber powder? I put 2 T in my protein shake every morning and it is awesome! No strange taste or texture. I love it!

Hi Mel!
I love your Friday notes and the personal emails. Thank you for sharing.
I am feeling the same about my kids-how dare they grow up and move away to Minnesota and Illinois and Idaho (2) ! At least I have one grandbaby here in Oregon with me and one more on the way.
I’m feeling fairly ready for Christmas, now that I’ve mailed my packages.
One of our traditions is matching pjs that I make for everyone, then we open them on Christmas Eve and take pictures in front of the tree. I’ve been making them for 31 years now. When there was only 6 to make. We are up to 25 now 😳 Anyway, I just have to figure out what my husband wants 🤔
Sounds like you have the best calling! My favorite of all!
Well— I hope you have a Wonderful Christmas and a Blessed New Year!
Stacy Buchanan
Merry Christmas! I’ll be there for the 20 year party. This may sound dramatic but you really have changed my life for the better. I saw a new person move in near by me wearing one of your sweatshirts and am sure we will become fast friends. I love your notes at the bottom of the weekly meal plan. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!
Please continue Friday thoughts! I am not on social media and I would really miss reading your thoughts. I am older and it is fun to look at your family and see myself and family there, doing a lot of the same things not to long ago, I’ve loved your blog for a few years now, I introduced my daughters to it and they also love it! Thanks for being real with us all. In this world of social media, it is nice to see and read your blog! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Happy New year too. Hope the New year treats you and your family well!
Tried the basil seeds this morning in yogurt. I quite liked them and think they’ll be a regular addition.
Also received the bar shampoo and conditioner. Can’t wait to try them.
I love your cookbook and life tips. 🩷
Very happy to hear that, Jan – thank you!
Hey, Mel! I am loving that cozy cardigan you’re rocking in that last photo. Did you make it?
Oh, I wish! I’m not that talented. I found it at a thrift store!
Congratulations on 18 years! That is quite the accomplishment. I need to channel all your motivation. I’m older than you but have younger kids so all my motivation goes into that. I don’t get on social media very often so I like the blog or email updates best but if I had to choose…blog because I love the comments. My 7 year old asked me the other day if our dinner came from “Mels CHICKEN Cafe.” I’m all done with everything this year but that’s because I eliminated a lot due to jury duty among other things. Thank you for all you do! I’m up for a celebration in 2027!!
Thanks for the feedback, Jill! And that cracked me up about the renaming of my blog. I’ll take it. I love chicken. Haha. Merry Christmas!!
This is the BEST corner of the internet! Amazing what you have been able to create here. I can’t even tell you how useful and appreciated your work is. I must be your biggest fan! Thank you, thank you, thank you! 18 years is incredible.
You are so kind, Leah – THANK YOU!
And forgot to say: Congratulations on your achievement! An eighteen-year labor love and we are all the lucky recipients.
Thank you!
Hi Mel — Just a couple of thoughts in response.
I have cut way back on Christmas presents — I’m at the age where I’m trying to move things out of my life, not acquire them, and so are most of the people I might otherwise have on my list. So I have two presents ready, and might get one more. The way I approached them — these two people can get anything they want as soon as they know they want it, so I have to find something that they didn’t even know existed. I went to an antique mall and drifted around for a couple of hours with these two people in mind, just seeing what might catch my eye. And I found two items, which I hope they’ll like.
Love your white chicken chili, Beach Street lemon chicken pasta, and lemon lentil soup. (Well, I don’t _love_ the lemon lentil soup, but it is the best lentil soup I’ve had.) Also love the chocolate ginger molasses cookies.
With respect to emails versus Friday thoughts: I vote for Friday thoughts. I like reading everything all collected, I like being able to go back in time on your website, and I also like reading the comments. So please keep them coming.
A very happy holiday season to you and yours 🙂
Margaret – I love your approach to gift giving! Such intention. Thanks for sharing the recipes you love (haha and kind of love!). And I appreciate your feedback on the Friday Thoughts!
I have been with you since My Kitchen Cafe.❤️ To prove it, I have some printed recipes with the picture printed off really big because back then I had no idea how to print just the recipe.🤣
I love getting the emails for Friday thoughts. I get all your new recipes via emails.
Btw: your pasole soup showed back up in my crockpot this winter. Top 5 best recipe you have ever posted. All the add-ins are required along with refried beans.
And I bought a suitcase you recommended in your gift list this year. 10/10. You never do me wrong.
Haha, that means you really have been around a long time! Bless you! I love knowing the recipes you love, and that reminds me I need to make that posole. Top 5?? That’s awesome!! So glad you love it. Thanks for being here, friend.
Sending so much love to you and your family, Mel! We’ve never met but I feel like we’re friends. 🙂 I hope you have a beautiful Christmas. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Jesus Christ. They are beautifully said, and I feel the same! <3
Thank you, Angela! Merry Christmas!
Christmas is such a wonderful time to give thanks, and I am sending a huge one your way! It has been an off year for me also and I really needed to read both your fun Friday Thoughts this morning and your comment about giving yourself some grace. I am much older than you and still find that to be challenging somedays. I am headed to Boise next week for a doctor’s appointment and am going to try to get some frantic last-minute Christmas shopping in. Wish me luck making it up and down Eagle Road!
I’m sorry about it being kind of an off year. It’s good for all of us to gently remind each other of that and I hope you truly can have so much compassion for yourself. And oh my, thoughts and prayers for your Eagle Road excursion. I avoid that at all costs, but sometimes it IS necessary!
Always love reading your thoughts, and your gift recommendations always come in clutch! Trivia is now on it’s way to my house for hubs! I am trying to identify which kid is in the gingerbread house pic and I’m going with #3?? Merry Christmas to your crew!
Haha, yes, crazy #3. 🙂
Mel, what are you eating for lunch these days? After reflecting on it, I realized I’ve been getting my health recommendations from you for awhile. 😂 Not in medical way, just in a friend way. I think you’re just a few years older than me so I appreciate your advice. Also, of course your recipes! I’ve been here since the blogspot days (back in 2008 one of my friends tried to print every recipe from your website for me for Christmas since she knew I was a big fan girl. I don’t think she was able to finish it even back then!) Thanks for all the good food! Merry Christmas!
Haha, I feel like the meanies on the internet will come after me if they think I’m dispensing health advice (as they should, probably, ha). But yes, I love chatting about healthy type stuff in a friend way. Lunch. The bane of my existence. I never understand people who say they forget to eat. I eat lunch every day…and honestly gravitate toward the same type of things, but I’m warning you: it’s boring. I always eat a handful of cherry tomatoes (I love the ones on the vine from Costco – they are so flavorful). And then follow it up with either cottage cheese + tuna + cucumbers (or pickles) or some type of no-nitrate meat rolled up with cheese and thin pretzel crisps. Or leftovers. I like to eat fast and I’m not super creative that time of day. I also love the white bean and tuna salad on my website (SUPER old recipe) – it makes great lunches and I make that often.
Thanks Mel! Don’t worry, I won’t tell the meanies! I never know what to do for lunch so I overcomplicate it and then can’t keep up. Thanks for your simple suggestions!
Love your emails, love your Friday thoughts, and thank you for your amazing recipes! Thank you for the basil seeds recommendation! Also on the same goal to get more fiber. I am getting those!
I am holding up ok! Shopping is done and wrapped. Not going anywhere, but having 3 of my 4 kids, 2 spouses, and 1 grandkid coming for Christmas in a week, so ask me how I am holding up in a week and a half 🙂 We went out driving to look at Christmas lights last night and then came home and had hot chocolate–just me and my hubby, as we are empty nesters. We have enjoyed lots of Christmas music, Christmas puzzles, and watching Christmas movies! Love you, Mel! I hope you have a blessed Christmas with your family!
Thanks for being here, Jen – appreciate your email check-ins!
Hi Mel,
For whatever it’s worth I just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your Friday Thoughts & life updates on your website! I am not a social media user (just a 40 something mom who’s not a SM fan) and hate email clutter so visiting your blog and seeing updates is a simple pleasure I enjoy! That’s all. Merriest of Christmases to you and your family!
I appreciate the feedback, Laura! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Hi Mel, my first comment here, I think! First of all, thanks a lot for all the good work you put in for free, it‘s greatly appreciated. To give the feedback you asked for: I‘m staying off Instagram more and more these days (for political, moral and frankly entertainment reasons, plan to delete completely) and find myself gravitating back to the old, blogstyle texts. I enjoy the Friday-Posts and prefer going to them, when I feel like it. Emails tend to feel more like work to me.
Greetings from Germany, Karin
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Karin – I appreciate it so much! Thank you for your feedback! I also feel the need/desire/drive to stay off Instagram more for a lot of the same reasons. So I get that completely! I’ll keep posting Friday Thoughts and little tidbits in emails. Thanks for being here.
MERRY CHRISTMAS MEL AND FAMILY:)
Thanks, Vicki!
This Christmas season has been a little tender for me. I have a 16 1/2 year old daughter, who texted me with SO MUCH excitement when the church announced women could serve missions at 18. I burst into tears. I know she would have been leaving for college anyway, but it’s different and it hits different. I really only have this Christmas and one more with her REALLY here (I know she’ll come back but it’s not the same). She’s also my only girl so I’ll be stuck in a house full of boys. 😭😆 She makes your favorite cookie (the oatmeal and coconut one) and we just eat the dough. We rarely cook any of it. It just lives in our fridge and we grab a scoop here and there. Anyway life is really good and I’m grateful I have a relationship with my kids that makes me sad to see them leave but also happy that they have the independence and motivation to leave. I once heard someone say “we’re not empty nesters, we’re bird launchers” and it makes me cry almost every time I say it.
Anyway, that was a novel. Thanks for being my friend and sounding board (you and everyone else who reads your comments – hi y’all! 😂). Love you Mel!
Ah, Ali – solidarity with you as you navigate those emotions as a mom. It’s excitement and heartbreak and just so much bittersweetness rolled up into one. Your daughter sounds amazing. Love your comment, thanks for chiming in. Hugs to you. And Merry Christmas. I hope it’s special and lovely.
