Snapshot Saturday
Here’s little Cam in her first pigtail. I nearly cried with joy. I’ve been waiting a l.o.n.g. time to try out pigtails in a little girl’s hair. Granted, it’s a bit of a stretch, considering there might be ten or twelve hairs stuck in that pigtail…but adorable nonetheless.
I need a little help, though. This little baby girl + lots of hair thing has me stumped. I’m trying to wrap my mind around all the cute stuff made just for a little girl’s head. If you are in the know with girlie hair stuff – where do you get hair accessories (headbands, bows, ties, etc) for little girls? Do you buy them? Where? Do you have a pinterest board? Uh, link, please! Do you make them? I really, really need some technical assistance so my daughter-among-sons looks cute. I’m kind of ethically against the hairbows that are larger than the child’s head, but I’m willing to give anything a shot if it will help out Cam’s plethora of hair. Help me out! Sincerely, Hairbow Challenged. (And if you could care less about girlie hair stuff…and I can’t blame you…head on outta here and check back Monday for my favorite dinner of the summer.)
i have a boutique and sell handmade adorbale clothing and headbands! check us out.

i too went crazy for girly stuff after having a boy first now i have 2 girls~~
btw on your blog planning my weekly menu!
Came across this on pinterest: BannerBoutiqueOnEtsy. Really pretty!!!
I hate huge bows and flowers too! That is the entire reason why I started to make my own! I couldn’t find any that were small enough, so I just found tutorials online to figure out how to do some fun ones, and then started coming up with my own ideas once I got the hang of it. I had so much fun making bows that my husband convinced me to open a shop, so if you don’t want to take the time to make your own, visit http://www.jillbirdbows.etsy.com, or find Pretty Little Bows by Jillbird on facebook. Most of my stuff is fairly small, and sits close to her head, so it won’t bobble around and look ridiculous. My favorite headbands are made from nylons. They are so soft and stretchy, and my baby never seems to mind them. And, I always look for small artificial flowers at the craft store. They are so easy to make into clips, and really inexpensive.
Have fun! I can’t believe how much this not-very-girly-mom has enjoyed dressing up a baby girl after having two boys!
So cute! I have four boys and never got to put in pigtails either as I’d always dreamed I be able to. (Not upset about what I am blessed with.) π Years ago one of my friends who then had three boys finally had a girl and she said it was so exciting to see pink lint in the dryer. π
You can get super cute stuff at the dollar store like little clips with bows and flowers. Fake flowers are also great- if you pull off the actual flower and hot-glue it onto a clip, it looks adorable! And of course, tying ribbons in two little pigtails is a fantastic and simple option:) Some of these are cute:

By the way, her nose is just so cute! I don’t know what it is about it, but that nose makes me happy!
Hi Mel…I must say E bay is where its at for hair bows at great prices and selections to die for. I literally spent a small fortune only because the selection was crazy awesome. I love this page of yours as every recipe has been a hit from the lime bars to the cheesecake. its truly my go to page for no fail recipes! thanks and really I hope you try ebay and let me know how it turns out.
What a beautiful little girl! My girls are both grown now, but I do remember buying cute hair clips and things at Claire’s and Icings. I didn’t have to buy a lot because I was lucky enough to have sisters whose girls were just a few years older than mine. We got a lot of handmedowns.
I know just how you feel! I’ve been waiting a long time too so I’ve been prepping for this girl coming in October. I’ve found dozens of tutorial websites and I plan to make some of my own. But I just don’t know how much hair she’ll have the first 6 months (my boys didn’t have more than a thin layer until between 6 and 9 months) so I also bought her some crochet knit headbands from Amazon that I can stick the bows onto until she has a full head of hair. You don’t look like you need them but these are the ones I got: http://www.amazon.com/Ema-Jane-Headbands-Toddlers-Hairband/dp/B004DF94SM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1344728945&sr=8-3&keywords=crochet+headbands
And here are a few of my favorite tutorial sites:
http://www.girlythingsbows.com/
http://tencowchick.com/ (tutorials are down the left side and under the “just bows” tab. she also sells them in her etsy shop)
http://ilikebigbows.blogspot.com/
You can also get some cute bows at Target in the section for hair things, next to the hair brushes. They have those cute, shaped plastic barrettes we wore when we were kids and all kinds of bows and flowers and stuff. They sell them online too. (http://www.target.com/p/goody-5ct-gls-fc-bw-sln-clps/-/A-13966623

Darling! I have three boys and a girl. She is almost four now. The ONE thing that I did miss with being the mom of all boys, before our princess arrived, was pigtails. Is there anything cuter? I am very challenged when it comes to doing my own hair, much less my little girl. I’m afraid that getting her hair in those long wished for pig tails has been a challenge. Enter the tiny and simple felt bow hair clip. Lifesaver! There are lots of great tutorials out there. I initially bought some from a few different Etsy shops and have since started making them. If you aren’t inclined to learn how to make hair bows right now, please give yourself permission to buy some. Life is crazy! This was my favorite shop (I don’t know the owner or anything, just love the cute hair clips)
http://www.etsy.com/shop/cranberriesandcapers
Darling little snap clips with buttons are just the thing for those early pigtails! Enjoy! So happy for you all!
Etsy has so many fun things for girls! Also, Claire’s or the Icing (in the mall) have some super cute little girls hair accesories!! Have fun.
Oh my…..she is ADORABLE Mel! She really brings a smile to my face. π
I’m sure her hair will be just fine as she grows up. If the pigtail you have on her doesn’t make her the cutest thing…then I don’t know what will!
I thought for sure one of my favorite sewing bloggers (thought it was Sew Mama Sew, but apparently not) did some posts on this. This isn’t it, but close:
http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/09/simple-bow-hair-clips-with-no-slip-grip.html
When I was pregnant with number two recently and wishing for a girl I came across these on etsy… http://www.etsy.com/shop/fabflowerheadbands
Super cute stuff, and lots of options that are not giant! ha ha
You’ll have to try to make some! It’s so fun to finally make cute girly things! Plus it’s cheaper. This is my favorite tutorial for a headband http://www.sewinginnomansland.com/2011/03/27/the-butterfly-dress-and-headband/
bitsybands.com has a great selection of elastics. And their flowers are beautiful (not cheap looking like most sites).
And though I’m sure others have way better boards than these, here are my pinterest boards for little girl tutorials

Girls are so fun. And yours is Adorable!!
http://www.girlscrochetheadbands.com is definitely a site to check. Reasonably priced, good quality and selection. She has small bows if you don’t like the large ones. Also etsy.com has many shops if you are looking for made to match, etc.
Sorry, look at her facebook page- Joligood Flowers
Check out my daughter’s website. http://www.joligoodflowers.com. She has
a lot of cute hair accessories for little girls.
Ha! This is awesome. I’m going to bookmark this page do I can look up everyone’s suggestions. I just had a girl after 4 boys. All my boys were baldies until they were 1. This little girl has a head full of hair!! Add to it he’s a girl and I’m lost. I don’t even know how to brush it without making her look like a boy :/
Check out etsy for a lot of great deals! I got like 10 headbands for around $5! I have 3 girls! Word to the wise, get those headbands n flowers in her hair/on her head now and keep them on! Everywhere you go! If not she will fight it everytime and figure out how to take them off super quick. Mine started wearing headbands the day they left the hospital and I would keep them on even at home for while to get them use to them. Even doing pigtails a lot more will help w her not fighting u! π Now my girls r 7.5.3 n all love their hair done n don’t fight me w brushing it, puting flowers in it etc! Good luck and btw she is super cute!!! Girls r a ton of fun to dress up n get all dolled up! Making stuff yourself will be cheaper in the long run! π in sure pinterest will have great ideas!
I just barely got my first little pig tail on my girl and she is 16 months! I am a DIY kind of girl since these things can get QUITE spendy so I make all of her hair bows and headbands out of ribbon, fabrics, felt and silk flowers. I like all different styles too. So she wears a nice assortment.
Check out this link for some ideas, they are fairly easy. http://www.tipjunkie.com/kids-hair-bows/
and this site has almost anything you can imagine http://makebowsandmore.blogspot.com/
Mostly I just go to whatever craft store and buy stretchy ribbon, lace or trim like this (this site is just lace but you get the idea)
http://www.laceheaven.com/c-250-stretch-lace-trim.aspx
Measure your little ladies head then cut to length. Glue the two ends together then another little loop with the same colored ribbon to cover up the glued together part and to have a place to clip the hair bow. Then you can switch out any hair bow you want with the headband. Make your hair bow or flower then glue on the back one of these
http://www.sallybeauty.com/metal-curl-clips/SLNCAR19,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH they have single pronged smaller ones but they don’t seem to stay in as well as these double pronged ones.
Most hair bows just require a glue gun, so if you are sewing impaired like me it isn’t too difficult at most a needle and thread. I also like to add little fake pearls, sequins, buttons or “shiny’s” as my son calls them to the centers of my bows. They add a nice touch. π I too was in intimidated when I had my girl about hair bows and hairstyles but with a little practice and very little supplies you can come up with some REALLY cute stuff! Good luck with your little girl π She is darling.
http://www.pinkbowtique.com/ is a great site with reasonable prices! I also hate bows the size of dinner plates, but you can pick the size of the bow at this site a lot of times. I also find coupon codes for the site at http://www.retailmenot.com. Usually 10% off, free shipping, etc…
I just had my first girl after three boys so I know what you mean! Plus she has tons of hair too. My friend directed me to veryjane.com and groopdealz.com and they almost always have cute and inexpensive hair accessories. Plus, I’ve started making lots of stuff. There’s lots of websites out there where you can get cheap materials to make your own and it’s not too expensive. You just need some fold over elastic! I’ll link up my pinterest hair board. But how much fun fun is this girl thing!? I want a dozen more girls I’m loving it so much! http://pinterest.com/emmaleedle/hairography/. Your little cam is absolutely darling!
Here are a couple of tutorials & the headbands are not super huge. I agree, your child should not have a bow so huge on her head that she looks like a birthday present! My daughter pulls everything out of her hair, I am lucky to get an elastic in to fix a small ponytail, but I have made several bows for when she gets passed this phase.

http://www.craftinessisnotoptional.com/2011/01/pleated-headband-tutorial.html
She is so georgeous, and the ponytail only adds! I know all about girls with minimal amounts of hair, that’s how much my daughters both had a one year, so you’re lucky! You definitely need to check out haloheaven.com for SURE! And sign up for their e-mails, I sometimes get coupon codes for 40% off, and their prices are already SUPER cheap!
Hey Mel! She is adorable! My little gal has a ton of hair too and I love it with little bows and “pigs” as her sister calls them. We love to do our bow shopping on Etsy. Super cute things and the prices range anywhere from super cheap to ridiculously expensive, so they fit all your needs. π If you’re interested in hair styles, check out http://www.girlydohairstyles.com. She has some super cute ideas as she gets older.
Mine is a year and still not enough hair for a pig tail- jealous! I have ordered from http://www.princessbowtique.com – they have tons of cute stuff, my favorites are the vintage ones. I was also ethically against the huge bows, but then I tried one on my own child and oh my heavens. It’s always cute on your own, right? π And it was just for pictures, we don’t cruise the grocery store like that.
She’s simply a dor able! And I love the single pig tail. I remember the when my daughters hair was finally long enough for 2! I found that Claires, usually at the mall, has cute baby/ little girl accessories and expensive too. Have fun!
I’m morally opposed to giant hairbows as well. π This tutorial on felt headbands looked darling and really quite simple. http://shadandlizzie.blogspot.com/2010/08/felt-flower-headband-tutorial.html?m=1 I’d definitely take a look–I’m super excited to try them myself. My little babe had minimal hair for a while (still sporting those two-inch ponytails at 17 months), so I adore headbands that say, yes, this is my girl.
She looks like you, Mel! I only have a son but I agree with you about the bigger-than-the-head bands! Then you can’t see their hair at all. This is on a friend of mine’s FB page. She has 4 girls.

I have to echo what Rachel J said… Not a fan of hair bows and bobbles on children unless they serve a purpose. They must feel unnatural to the little tike, just go natural. When her hair is long and pulled into ponytails or braids, a little bow would be nice but let the girl be natural. Just my opinion. And those headbands… never would stand those things… try wearing one yourself for a whole day and then see…
You could definitely buy some headbands, but I much prefer making them out of something called fold over elastic. It is SUPER soft and stretchy and comes in lots of colors. The best place to find it is on etsy, if you do a search under supplies. It is also fairly cheap. My daughter uses about 15-16 inches for her head. Sew together the two ends and then cut a short piece to sew over the seam (perpendicular to the rest of the headband). That part will then work great to clip something to.
This website shows you how to make a ton of different bows. Then you can just glue them to two prong clips that you get at Sally’s Hair or Hobby Lobby. Costume satin also makes cute flowers if you cut it in concentric circles and then singe the edges and a few spots in the middle before gluing it all together. Make It and Love It also has some very cute hair accessory ideas too.
I get headbands from theribbonretreat.com. They sell most of their stuff wholesale so it’s super cheap. They also have tutus, tulle, fabric, ribbon, flowers, etc.
Promise I’m not trying to spam your board, but if you go to her facebook page, she’s got a set of them listed as a special for $25 shipped!
Mel, you absolutely MUST check out http://www.girlscrochetheadbands.com. I have 3to girls and have gotten all of my headbands, flowers, and bows from them. They are SO affordable, which means you can buy more! The wraparound crochet headbands (great for before there is lots of hair) are 38 cents each, the flowers that clip onto thea headbands are mostly under $3. You can mix and match, there are lots of colors to choose from. Awesome site. Cheaper than walmart!
AH-HA! I found it! http://www.juliasbowtique.com/ Well, it looks like she’s gone up in pricing a bit, but $28 for 24-2.5 inch grosgrain bows is NOT bad at all!! Then, you can add in specialty bows later!
Well ma’am, you’re on the right track with those little elastics. At Target/Walmart, Goody (I think) makes these teensy little clips too that come in a bunch of different neon-y colors for when we don’t want to use an elastic. I’m trying to find the vendor that I bought Marie’s hairbows from, because I got like 24 (in a rainbow of colors!) for like $28 shipped? They were 2 inch bows (not bigger than her head, proportionate!) and were really well made. For now, here’s a link to a site with some neat ideas for you to consider!
http://www.girlydohairstyles.com/
I don’t have a daughter, but I have to tell you what a cutie yours is. You have waited for this, the hair part will come, enjoy!
Etsy!!!!!
I like this site for ideas: http://babesinhairland.com/tag/baby-hairstyles/
Products I get either at the dollar, store, Target, craft store or make them myself. π
I made everything for my girl but the actual bands. I just went to my local craft store and found flowers that were cute and took off the stem and hot glue gunned a sparkle in the middle and hot glue gunned the flower to a barrette found at Sally’s. They come in a box of 100 for a couple of dollars. WAY cheaper then purchasing already made flowers and you can get the flowers you really want. I purchased the headbands except the nylon ones can be made from little girl tights. So I made those too. Good luck!!
I bought some stretchy headbands at Family Dollar, and I make a most of my own clips. My favorite clips are from Sally’s – you can buy small or large boxes – and I buy up cheap ribbon (3/8″ to wrap around the clip) when I find it. I make a lot of flowers out of felt, and I totally high five you on the flowers bigger than the baby’s head thing. And I’ve found lots of ideas on pinterest. Normally, if you can find a picture you can probably figure out how to pull it off yourself.
no hair accessory tips for that sweet face, but i just had to comment on how cute she is!
We have our first great granddaughter. (-: Took us 42 years to get a girl in this family. Everything has to be PINK at my house. That is all I buy, PINK. I have seen lots of bows and headbands on Zulily.com. I am with you on the too big bows. It makes their heads look out of shape. I like the smaller things.
Until my daughter’s hair grew longer I bought small flower (fabric) hair clips to keep the hair out of her face. I found them at small baby stores (new and used) and online. PS….she is a cutie.
I get all my stuff at alwaysunderpay.com. You get tons of cute stuff at amazing prices and they have such a great selection! I have 3 girls and 1 boy so we do a ton of hair around here. When she gets older and you need hairstyle ideas, go to cutegirlshairstyles.com. Good luck and enjoy!
for my grandaughters i buy the stretchy headbands at dollar stores and then make either fabric flowers or ribbon bows and sew them on……….super easy and can make to coordinate with any outfit……..also lots less expensive than those out in the market
My favorite etsy store I have found is Pineapple Hill Designs
http://www.etsy.com/shop/pineapplehilldesigns
She has super cute stuff, well made for great prices. There are lots of hair options and she is always adding more, plus it is a great place for bloomers (in my opinion, a must for little girls under dresses and skirts)!
Girls are so much fun :-)!!!
I could stare at that snapshot for hours, she is unbelievably cute!
I’m currently working on my Etsy shop….and have started making headbands for babies. If you’re interested, email me!
I know how you feel! I was also in your situation….having a girl after 4 boys, so I completely understand not knowing what to do about acquiring such things π
So sweet and growing SO fast! OcΓ©anne has a lot of hair, but I don’t think I could do a pigtail just yet! π How old is she now? My little girly will be 4 months on the 18th, it’s crazy how time flies!
