Cookie Dough Truffles
Looking to kick cookie dough up a notch? These cookie dough truffles are delicious, simple, and will definitely be crowd pleasers.
After posting two chili recipes almost simultaneously, I couldn’t resist the urge to follow-up my last cookie dough post with another winner in the cookie dough department.
Cookie Dough Truffles. Oh my.

These were tasty. Really tasty. So tasty that half the batch didn’t end up at the intended destination of my neighbor’s house for a football party. Oops.
I happen to love truffles especially the cheater kind and these fit that department. Simple, delicious and a great crowd pleaser! (P.S. there are no raw eggs in the cookie dough so you can relieve your mind on that account!)
Cookie Dough Truffles
Ingredients
- ½ cup (113 g) butter, softened
- ¾ cup (159 g) packed brown sugar
- 2 ¼ cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup (85 g) miniature semisweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped walnuts, optional, I did not add them
- 1 ½ pounds semisweet chocolate candy coating, chopped
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the flour, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla; mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnuts, if using.
- Shape into 1-inch balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Loosely cover and freeze for 1-2 hours or until firm. (The dough softens quickly at room temperature so it works best if they are frozen, not just chilled in the refrigerator.)
- In a microwave safe bowl, melt candy coating, stirring often until smooth. Dip balls in coating; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets.
- Refrigerate until firm, about 15 minutes. If desired, melt remaining candy coating and drizzle over candies. Store in refrigerator.

I made these in October for our Thanksgiving..here in Canada…and they were a huge hit. Everyone loved them. So I’m making them again for Christmas. Thank you for the recipe.
I’ve also made a few of your other recipes and they have all been enjoyed very much by my family. They are now part of my family menu.
Thank you Mel
Melanie- Your recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate to dip them in, but I was wondering if you think they would still be good with regular chocolate, or would that make them too sweet????
Amy – I’m a semisweet/dark chocolate lover so I use it all the time instead of milk. If you prefer milk chocolate, though, by all means, yes, you could coat the truffles in that instead. It will make the finished truffle a little sweeter, though.
So trying these! But 5 and a half dozen? That could get me in trouble! Hope the neighbors feel up to some goodies!
Jen – your comment was like a big “duh!” moment for me…why didn’t I think to make these into heart shapes? Brilliant!
I just made them and they turned out great! I shaped them in hearts for Valentine’s in stead of the balls. I’m a little concerned there won’t be any left by the time the big day rolls around tomorrow!
Hi Melanie, I just discovered your blog and found lots of recipes that I want to try. I’ve had these cookie dough balls before and liked them, but I like my friend’s version a little better. She follows the choc chip cookie recipe on the back of the Nestle chip bag substituting egg beaters for the eggs and using mini-choc chips instead of the regular ones. SO GOOD!!
Thanks, Melanie…so excited to make these!
Lori – yes, I believe candy coating (like almond bark) is the same as candy melts (like the kind you can buy at Hobby Lobby or Michaels). I usually use chocolate flavored coating to cover these cookie dough truffles and the oreo truffles, mostly because it is cheaper than real chocolate. But yes, you could definitely use baking chocolate, melted, if you can’t find candy melts or coating.
Hi Melanie, I’m back with another quick question..is candy coating the same as candy melts? Is it chocolate flavor and if so, can I just use bakers choc if I can’t find the candy coating?
Lori
Anonymous – I chilled the dough after shaping it into balls but if the dough is too soft, then by all means chill it for 20-30 minutes before forming it into balls. Good luck!
Did you chill the dough altogether or you chilled after you formed the balls?
Thanks!
Anonymous – I didn’t have the problem of the dough being very sticky but I did chill them for several hours. That may help – sticking them back in the fridge or freezer to firm up. Good luck!
Did you find that the dough was very sticky and difficult to form the balls?
Hey Lori – I’ve never made these and stored them in the fridge for longer than a day but my guess is that you could definitely freeze the truffle part and take them out to dip when you need them and once dipped, they will probably stay fresh in the fridge for up to 4 or so days (I know a traditional truffle is good in the fridge for up to 3 weeks). Good luck!
Melanie, how many days can I keep these refrigerated? or could I even make them a week in advance and keep them frozen?
Thanks!
Quite frankly I like cookie dough more than I like cookies a lot of the time so these sound like they’re right up my alley!
Your truffles always look beautiful. You have some great dipping and swirling-top skills. 🙂
I can’t wait to try these! Your oreo truffles are already a favorite around here. I was drooling at the picture on the screen. I LOVE cookie dough and so I know these will be amazing! Thanks!
I think this might be two awards in one day (I think we were both given one by Stephanie)…but I just had to give you another one. Yours was the blog that got me back into wanting to blog about food again. You have such awesome recipes! So check out my blog for another award…
Wow–Melanie–Your truffles look professional!! I am very impressed! I will have to come up with a special occasion to make these babies for!! Thanks!
These were so delicious! I made them for work, and made half of them dipped in chocolate, and the other half just had chocolate on part of them. They were gobbled right up!
Oh wow, these look unbelievable. Chocolate chip cookie dough might be one of my favorite things EVER.
yum!!! I will have to make these real soon! I make homemade candies for the holidays, so I can just add these!!!

The Brewers – glad you liked them! My diet has been ruined for ages, if it makes you feel any better. 🙂
Oh dear. These would be a truffle that I would have a tough time staying away from. What a fun recipe!
at first glance, these seem like a lot of work. then, after thinking about it for a hot second, i decided they’d totally be worth it. great recipe! 🙂
Yay! No raw eggs so us pregnant girls can have some!!
Please, please do not make these if you are pregnant. I don’t know how the blog owner and all these readers missed this, but E.Coli in raw flour has been in the national news for months now. Do not eat things that contain raw flour. Especially if you are pregnant. E.coli can be deadly for your baby. http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm508450.htm
These are just my kind of treat. I really believe that I would eat every last one of them all by my lonesome self. Wow is all I can say.
I’m sooo trying these… They definitely look worth being fat for!! 😉
Anonymous – I’m sorry to hear that because they have been such a hit when I’ve made them. I wonder if something went wrong with the recipe?? Or maybe cookie dough inside of a truffle just isn’t your cookie-dough lovers’ thing! Maybe you can pawn the extras off on your neighbors!
Allie – I checked out your blog – thanks for letting me know you liked these! I’ll try to ignore the calorie calculations so I don’t feel guilty when I eat them. 🙂
Yum! I made these for a bachelorette party and they were a hit! I added them to my blog simply-allie.blogspot.com. Thank you!

Yum! I love cookie dough! This is such a good treat. You made them look so beautiful too!
Anonymous – I’ve always found the candy coating (almond bark) in the baking aisle near the chocolate chips.
Yummy! I have tried tons of your recipes and they have all been wonderful! I’m sure this one will not dissapoint!!
I made these today as a run-through before the holidays. To my surprise, NO ONE in the family liked them! I was absolutely shocked. Stunned. I mean, I have a family of cookie-dough lovers.
Oh my. These are really almost TOO good, I think. If that’s possible.
Where do you find semisweet chocolate candy coating? Is it in the baking aisle near chocolate chips and such?
