Snapshot Saturday
This past week, Brian and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary. Since the 10 year anniversary classically symbolizes sushi (huh, you didn’t know that? strange…), we celebrated by eating ourselves sick on delicious, take-out sushi for dinner while the boys gorged themselves on waffles. Candlelight sushi and waffle dinner, of course. That’s what 10 years does to you…you celebrate the anniversary family-style and love every minute of it. Brian sent me these beautiful flowers during the day – 10 yellow roses (my favorite color and the same flower in my wedding bouquet) each tied with a handwritten note of a milestone we’ve reached together in our 10 years. I bawled like a baby. It was so sweet and made me feel a little sheepish that all I gave him was a homemade card with a simple tagline on the front about kids and cake (this section of this post has been updated; I previously posted exactly what the card said on the front but it hurt many of your feelings and so I’ve deleted the specifics – it was never my intention to offend anyone and I’m sorry if I did!).
It has been a wonderful, busy 10 years…can’t wait to see what the next 10 years will bring!

The sweetest ever. Those are the best gifts. Wishing you another 50+ years of wedded bliss.
I love your blog and love this post. Congrats on 10 years and the 10 years in your future! I love the personality you show in all your posts and the FABULOUS recipes you have on here. My family thanks you too 🙂 I think some are too easily offended. I was overweight growing up and I thought the comment was super funny. 🙂 Thank you for adding a little laugh and some “food joy” into our lives. Don’t change! My husband and I are celebrating our one year anniversary in a few days! Here’s to more years of happiness! Thanks Mel! You are fabulous!
Mel, I have always had ‘foot in mouth’ disease and was told by my beloved husband one time that I talked too much and was too friendly….I was in my 30’s! Well, a wonderful, very wise older woman, my mentor, told me ‘Do not change – that is who you are and why we all love you’. I want to tell you this same thing today! We love you, your great recipes, your family and your personal comments. That’s who you are. I, too, was a very fat kid way back when and I LOVED CAKE!! Still do! Who started this politically correct crap (oops!) anyway? You can delete this if you wish because as you can see, I listened to my mentor but I am STILL married to my beloved husband – 52 years! I am probably your oldest fan – and wisest – NOT!:))
Mel!! You are amazing! Thank you for always being such a great person! I’m a little overweight and I found this post to be hilarious. Who doesn’t know that fat kids love cake??? All kids love cake. And besides you didn’t write the card or force 50 cent to put it in a song! I’m so grateful your website is here and I will return often. Thank you!
Yikes…apparently I struck a nerve with the card I gave Brian for our anniversary. I apologize to anyone who was offended by the “I love you like a fat kid loves cake” card. That’s what I get for sharing personal details…always a bad idea, I’m learning, but don’t worry, lesson learned and I promise I have nothing personal against fat kids who love cake since I was one myself back in the day. I will strive to be more politically correct from her on out. Love ya!
I came across your blog today and was reading with enthusiasm. When I started reading this post, I teared up, I love mushy posts. However, once I got to your gift to him, my stomach turned a knot.
To be politically correct, you can’t make fun of folks of a different race. You can’t make fun of gay people. You can’t make fun of a whole laundry last of people. But the one bias no one seems to care about is the fat bias.
I won’t return to your blog.
Aww! What a sweet husband and a sweet ‘snapshot’ into your lives! Congrats and Happy Anniversary!
Congratulations!!!!! I love your web site!! Some of our favorite meals comes from you and I truly feel like a great cook!! Thanks.
Congrats again!!
Ok, let me get this right. 10 years … and all Bryan gets is a card that makes fun of childhood obesity? Wow, Mel. I guess the blog is struggling more than I thought. I guess I’ll have to visit more this site more often.
Congrats on the big 10!
WoW, what a lovely post. What ever you two are doing, keep it up! Congratulations to you and the family, it is as you say, all one big life to enjoy.
Congratulations!
Happy anniversary and congratulations!! You guys look the same!
What a sweet post, Mel. Happy 10th Anniversary! The roses are GORGEOUS, and how romantic to tie a milestone message to each one! Brian did good! You are such a beautiful, sweet couple. I wish you both and your family all of the best! 🙂
Wishing you a very happy anniversary and many more to come. My daughter got married the same month and year as you did! They’re celebrating # 10 this month as well! You two look so happy and he was so sweet sending you the roses, congratulations!
How fun. We just celebrated 12 years today:) We spent the weekend in a cabin that is supposed to sleep four and it was my and my hubby and our six sweet kids. Nice and cozy. The best part was when we made them all stay inside and we went and sat in the hot tub on the deck. They all had their hands pressed up on the glass peering out at us making sure we didn’t get too cozy 🙂
Happy Anniversary! Man, you guys are a good-looking couple! Sounded like a fab dinner and fab anni’. I’ve been following you for a long time. Justin, my hubby, knows you by name. We’re coming up on our 8 year anniversary. Time flies! Every single recipe I’ve ever tried has been top-notch. That keeps me coming back, and your awesome sense of humor! Yes, fat kids DO love CAKE, as do I! 😉 😉 Love ya! Thanks for your awesomeness and your amazing blog!

Happy Anniversary, Mel! We just celebrated ten years on the 27th of July. It feels like such a milestone to me. I love the little peeks into your life in your snapshot Saturdays (almost as much as I love your recipes). Thanks for being fantastic!
Oh, Congratulations on ten years! I also just celebrated ten years in June! So happy for you! Many blessings to you and your family! 🙂
Happy Aniversary!!!! You two look so beautiful (and handsome). I wish you much happiness and joy throughout the next ten years.
You are such a good looking couple! Congrats to you on celebrating 10 years. We are approaching that soon and it’s fun to enjoy with your kids; totally how we roll. Like everyone else has said, your blog and everything that comes with it are making our lives easier. So thank you for all of the work you put into this website. 🙂
Love your blog! Completely jealous that someone who cooks as well as you and has had 5 children in under 10 years, looks so good. One more proof that life isn’t fair 😉 I would consider myself a great cook, I’ve been married 15 years, am expecting my 6th but have put on more than my share of pounds.
Congratulations! What a fun post. I’ll be celebrating my 15th this month–isn’t it crazy how fast the time goes by?
Thanks for being my go-to source for the very best recipes. I love this blog!
I think Allyson must have just posted how all of us feel who visit your website – that you make a difference ‘for good’! Two fantastic people, five beautiful kids – 10 busy, fun filled years of marriage. I call that Blessed! Thanks for sharing your happiness (and your recipes:)! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!
Happy Anniversary to two very special people who have and are making a difference in the world for good. Thank you both for being a fantastic influence in my life (and the lives of my children) in multiple ways! We sure miss all of you and cherish our memories we made. To those of you reading who do not know Mel personally, she truly IS as great as she sounds on this blog … and then some! 🙂
Happy Anniversary Mel! Every one of your posts makes me laugh! Wish we both could have gone to the reunion. Miss you!
Congratulations! Ten years go by SO fast.
Oh, Mel! Happy Anniversary! Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us. I wish you two all the happiness in the world 🙂
Hi Mel! Congrats on 10 years!! I’ve never posted a comment, but I’ve been stalking you for months now. We would so be BFFs if I lived by you. We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary and I have six little kids, ages 1-8. Five girls and one boy. Even if we weren’t BFFs, at least I’d be on your list of families to go into the wilderness with. 🙂 I also love to cook and more importantly LOVE good food! LOVE your website. LOVE IT!! A friend of mine referred me to your website a few months ago and I have tried over 20 of your recipes. Delicious! I love them all. I no longer have to search the internet for the “best recipe”. You already did! And you are always right. I don’t know how you do it! I can’t imagine how much work this is with all your little kids, but I appreciate it. You seem to really love it and have an incredible talent. Thank you so much for sharing it with us! It makes my life WAY easier. Congrats on 10 years of marriage and being such a great mom!
You are beautiful people. Congratulations on a decade of love and sweet babies!
“I love you like a fat kid loves cake” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. That is awesome. I’m going to be chuckling about it all day. 🙂
So glad you are doing these Snap Shot Saturday posts. It’s fun to read more about you and your family, Mel. Happy Anniversary to you.
Congrats Mel! Thx for sharing the photo…you guys are too cute 🙂 What a wonderful way to celebrate & what a sweet hubby you have!
Congrats Mel! 10 years is much to be celebrated! I’m not so sure about the sushi, but the waffles sound good! Only of course if it is your recipe!!!!
