I know the name of this recipe appears sexist and exclusionary. Ok, so maybe it is sexist AND exclusionary, but it is just such a catchy name; I didn’t think it would sound the same if I added “Man and Woman and Child and Any Creature-Pleasin’ Sandwich.” So I’m just calling it the “Man-Pleasin’ Sandwich.” Sue me. And in the meantime, make it. It really was pleasing to our entire family, although my two-year old, due to the lack of molars, did have a hard time gumming the meat, so maybe I should modify the name yet again to: “Man and Woman and Child and Any Creature Over the Age of Three-Pleasin’ Sandwich.” Regardless it is a must make.
The recipe comes all the way from The Pioneer Woman Cooks blog. If you haven’t gotten on the Pioneer Woman bandwagon yet, you are missing out (I mean, come on, she averages over 200 comments per post, so you know the recipes have to be good). She is hilarious, a fabulous photographer, and has some really GREAT, down-to-earth recipes. Just as an FYI, the Pioneer Woman calls this sandwich “Marlboro Man’s Fave Sandwich” since that is what she calls her husband: “Marlboro Man.” They live on a ranch and are all rugged and stuff, so I’m sure the name applies, but since my husband has an office job and doesn’t have a tough, tan exterior like any Marlboro Man I’ve seen, I renamed it. If you want step-by-step photos of the sandwich-making process, visit http://www.thepioneerwomancooks.com/. I have made a few minor changes to the recipe below to suit our tastes so visit the site above for the original recipe.
Trade Secrets: A few things: the recipe calls for a lot of butter. I love butter, don’t get me wrong, but next time, I might eliminate the 2 tablespoons called for at the end of the recipe. I also used homemade buns made with my French Bread Roll recipe and they worked great. My cast iron skillet worked beautifully for this recipe, but I did have to cook the meat in two batches, because my skillet isn’t as gargantous as it should be, obviously. Finally, I added mozzarella cheese on top of the hot steak and it was wonderfully cheesy and good. Almost anything is better with cheese, don’t ya know?

2 to 3 pounds cube steak (tenderized round steak that’s been extra-tenderized)
1 large onion
4 French/Deli rolls
Butter
Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
Worcestershire Sauce
Mozarella cheese, sliced
DIRECTIONS:
Slice onions and cook in 1/4 stick butter until soft and light brown. Remove and set aside. Slice cube steak against the grain. Season with Lawry’s. Heat 2 TBSP butter over high heat (in same skillet) until melted and beginning to brown. Add meat in single layer. Cook one side until brown (don’t stir, just let the heat carmelize the meat and do it’s magic!), then flip and cook until brown, about a minute on both sides.
Add 1/2 cup (at least) Worcestershire sauce and 2 TBSP butter. Add cooked onions. Stir to combine. Butter halved French rolls and brown on skillet. To assemble, lay bottom half of French roll on plate. Place meat mixture, followed by a spoonfull of juice from the pan. Top with cheese and the other half of roll.

Gina, congratulations on being the second commenter on this post. Hallelujah! I love this sandwich, too, and am glad the steak was tender and full of flavor. Thanks for letting me know!
Hi Melanie- I made this sandwich thinking the meat was going to be rubbery but nope, it was tender and full of flavor! My husband and I fell in love with this sandwich! I also made the french rolls, they were very good but not as pretty as yours. Once again, another recipe of yours came through!
Yeah, I’m not crazy about the name either, but it looks really good. Nice and satisfying.
I love the “Man-Pleasin’ Sandwich” and the name! My MAN loves it too! We love everything else I have tried on your blog also, Mel. Thank you for getting me out of a cooking rut.
hi Mel, just wondering in the directions for this you mention “at least 1/2″ worcestershire sauce without a measurement ..is it 1/2 TB?
Carm – it has been so long since I made this that I didn’t remember (sorry about the error) – I looked at PW’s site where I got the recipe and it is 1/2 cup.
