Frozen Hot Chocolate

Frozen hot chocolate is one of my favorite evening treats. I love everyday hot chocolate, but making it into an icy, sweet, slurpy drink is my idea of glorious. I have tried several recipes and recently found this one on epicurious.com (I believe it is originally a Serendipity recipe). I loved it! Of course I added a bit more chocolate than the recipe called for but that is usually what happens in my world when it comes to chocolate – the more the better. It has now replaced my other recipes as my go-to frozen hot chocolate recipe. If you’ve never had frozen hot chocolate, it’s worth trying! Delicious.

INGREDIENTS:
4 ounces of your favorite chocolate (I used semi-sweet chocolate)
2 teaspoons store-bought hot chocolate powder
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
3 cups ice cubes
lightly sweetened whipped cream
chocolate shavings (optional)

DIRECTIONS:
Chop chocolate into small pieces and melt in microwave on low heat. Once melted, add hot chocolate mix and sugar, stirring constantly until thoroughly blended. Slowly add 1/2 cup milk, stirring until smooth. Cool to room temperature.

In blender, place the remaining 1 cup milk, room-temperature chocolate mixture and ice.
Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Enjoy! (This recipe made a large blender full – I believe I got at least 4 8 oz. servings from one batch.)

YUMMMM!!!! (And like Frieda said – a great oxymoron – that was the first thing I said when I read the title). This sounds like a great after dinner drink for Thanksgiving. Who needs a second dessert when you can have hot chocolate?

Melanie, My girls and I have enjoyed the “real thing” at Serendipity in New York and even ordered the mix from them. Can’t wait to try this version at home!

this makes me smile for two reasons:1-hello, it’s chocolate!2-it reminds me of that glorious john cusack movie, aptly titled “serendipity.” :)

Laura – glad you liked this. I guess the one bonus about your kids not liking it is there is more for you and your husband, right??

This sounds too good to be true! I’m such a chocoholic, it’s not even funny!

Ah. . . you’re kidding me! I went to New York last year with a trip to Serendipity in mind, but it was the one, (and only. . . seriously) place we did not get to stop by. I’ve always regretted it. My husband said he’d take me back just so I could have a frozen hot chocolate, but how dumb is that. But now it’s totally not necessary!!! I’m so excited. I think I might have to use this on a date night. Ya know, like a mock trip to NYC! Hmmn, what else could I do????? Thanks for the recipe. By the way, the bars you recommended were killer. My 6 year old son came to me crying, begging for the last little “chunck”. I told him if it would make him happy he could have it. He was later seen walking around with the equivalent of about 4 chuncks!!! Funny stuff! Thanks again for the great recipes!!

Leisel – glad the bars worked out! (And that your 6-year old loved them so much.) I hope you like this frozen hot chocolate – oooh, it is so yummy!

Okay, so the recipe says “remove from heat” but I didn’t have it on heat, it was in the microwave. Is it supposed to be heating when adding the milk? I made two batches and the second was better than the first. But they were both delicious. This will be a delicious summer holiday treat!

27 Alicia May 11, 2010 at 5:24 am

Oh and I forgot to mention that I used the Swiss Miss dark chocolate variety of hot chocolate and also used 1/2 cup of cream to make it more decadent. Maybe the 1 cup of skim balanced it out, but it was sure yummy!

28 Mel May 11, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Alicia – I’m sure it is a typo in the recipe. I’ll take a look and edit it. I’m glad you liked this – it is one of my favorite drinks and I think your changes/additions sound delicious (especially the dark chocolate and cream!).

29 Alicia May 19, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Made this again today and it was so much better than the first time I made it. I don’t think I measured the ice cubes accurately last time and ended up using too much. The flavor was much better this time, even without the cream! I guess practice makes perfect!

30 Mel May 19, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Alicia – glad this was even better the second time!

31 Kensi August 25, 2010 at 8:29 am

Hi Mel! Can I substitute Nesquick for the hot chocolate powder?

32 Mel August 25, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Kensi – I’ve never tried it with Nesquick but I’m guessing it would work just fine. Let me know if you try it!

I’ve wanted a blender for some time, but this gives me the best reason EVER to go get one! I’ve had this drink at Serendipity and it was fabulous! Can’t wait to make my own!
