60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
You are only a minute or so away from a decadent, delicious, chocolate chip mug cookie made start-to-finish in a mug and “baked” in the microwave!
This delightful mug cookie is our go-to treat fix when we want something sweet and tasty in a hurry!

A Few Tips to Make the Perfect Mug Cookie
After over a decade of making this chocolate chip mug cookie (regularly!), here are a few key tips to make sure it turns out perfectly!
- Use a microwave-safe mug or ramekin (a 6-ounce size works best).
- Mix the wet ingredients together first before adding the flour and chocolate chips.
- Measure the flour with a light hand (don’t pack it in). Too much flour and the cookie will be dry and crumbly.
- Follow the IMPORTANT microwave tips below. ⬇️
- Eat it warm! Right out of the microwave, preferably, with a scoop of ice cream.
The texture of the mug cookie is best right out of the microwave. As it cools, the texture hardens, so let me repeat: EAT THE COOKIE WARM! (Thanks for your patience while I shout in all caps – it’s an important message 😉).

Important Microwave Cooking Instructions

Managing Expectations: Mug Cookie vs Fresh-Baked Cookie
After reading hundreds of comments on this chocolate chip mug cookie recipe over the last ten years, I think there is one thing we can all agree on:
A microwaved cookie is NEVER going to taste like a fresh-baked traditional chocolate chip cookie. So manage your expectations accordingly!
But, if you have a cookie craving and need to fill it within seconds, this chocolate chip mug cookie is for you!
Topped with a scoop of ice cream (and maybe even a drizzle of hot fudge), it is so yummy! The perfect go-to treat when you don’t feel like firing up the oven and making an entire batch of cookies.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mug cake recipes are very hit or miss, but I was desperate for a sugar hit when I found this recipe, so I decided to give it a shot. It’s really one of the best I’ve tried. Quick, easy, delicious. The ice cream is a MUST. Thanks for the recipe! -Lily
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I keep coming back to this recipe after many years! -Mer
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I cooked at 70 percent power just to be safe and it came out perfectly. It has the texture of a chocolate chip cookie bar, more so than a cookie, which is still obviously very delicious. -Paige

60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) melted butter or coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) brown sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup (36 g) all-purpose flour (see note)
- 2 tablespoons (21 g) chocolate chips, regular size or mini
Instructions
- Very lightly coat the inside of a 6- or 8-ounce mug or ramekin with cooking spray, butter or coconut oil.
- To the mug or ramekin, add the melted butter, egg yolk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla and salt. Mix until well combined.
- Add the flour (see note!) and chocolate chips. Stir until just combined. If the batter is dry and crumbly, add a splash of milk.
- COOKING INSTRUCTIONS: the exact cooking time will vary on the size/wattage of microwave you are using. For a 1,000 watt microwave, cook for one minute at 80% power. For a 1,200 or 1,500 watt microwave, cook for 45 seconds at 75% power. You may need to play around with the exact timing based on your microwave. The key is to NOT OVERCOOK the mug cookie. The top should puff and spring back lightly to the touch.
- Serve warm (don't let it cool! It is infinitely better served immediately) with ice cream, if desired.

I made this and let me tell you it was delicious! I mixed the suggested ingredients first, then added the flour. I had to add a couple splashes of water from the sink (they probably added up to 1 tablespoon) because the flour made the dough so dry. It turned out fine, and looked just like the picture. I would wait a minute or two before eating, but it looked so good I had to try. It was still steaming when I finished it. 🙂 Also, it is a great size for one to have as a desert after lunch! I think it would be good with ice cream but I had it without and loved it just as much! Thanks, Mel!
Key Notes:
*When adding flour also add water as it needs it
*Great taste, great size for one to enjoy!!!!
This was delicious! It tasted like an oven baked cookie! One thing i would say though is that the cookie got very dry, hard, and bland after a while. Other than that, this cookie was delectable!
I needed a sweet fix before my baby woke up to nurse, which happens…..often, and quickly. Whipped this up and thoroughly enjoyed! I think next time I’ll add a splash of milk as it was a hair dry for my taste, but overall I couldn’t ask for more out of a cookie I whipped up in under 2 minutes.
I love this recipe! Works really well!
To dry and did not rise at all and taste BLAND
Tastes and feels more like a cake but its good
Tastes really good all though it was really hot and I had to wait a long time for it to cool off
Of corse it needs to cool!
Doubled the recipe but added baking soda and baking powder and only used one whole egg. And lots of vanilla
Delicious
Best and easiest mug cake!! Whenever I bake cookies I add some vanilla so I added a splash to this one as well.
That’s a very good idea, to add vanilla. I will try that next time for sure!
It was SUPER DRY!!! Made two of them one came out kind of dry and the second one wasn’t even sticking together.
Found this recipe today and made ONE for me. Well, per usual, my daughter had to have one after tasting mine. I used butterscotch chips since thats all I had on hand. Thanks!
It’s good but next time o recommend only 1 table spoon of chocolate chips it was kind of overpowering I will definitely make again I loved it!
Sure- It tasted eh? It was so so SO dry and crumbly. I followed the recipe EXACTLY and it came out with the texture of sand. I managed to salvage it by crushing it further and eating it like a cereal.
it was okay. too dry and too dense.
I was out of eggs, so I replaced the egg yolk with 1 or 2 tablespoons of cream cheese…amazing!! Thanks for the awesome recipe!
Mel, I usually never leave reviews but I had to let you know what I thought. This mug cookie was amazing! I followed the recipe exactly and added a splash of vanilla. The texture was perfect. This warm cookie definitely satisfied my craving!
This. Was. Bomb.
Followed the recipe exactly – it was way too sweet. I couldn’t continue beyond the first few bites. I wish I had read the comments before attempting >.<
Added a splash of vanilla, used only one tablespoon of dark chocolate chips, and a tiny sprinkle of coarse sea salt over the top. Magnificent.
I put the egg white in by accident instead of the yolk. It tasted a little different but it was still ok. I couldn’t figure out why the batter was a different texture.
Did not have ice cream, that’s the only bad part of my experience I agree with everyone who said it is dangerously good. Definitely cut sugar to half and add vanilla. Thank you! I’m so happy now (nom nom nom)
It was so good and decadent however it needs to be pared with something vanillay to balance the flavors
Great recipe for a quick dessert! I DID make it the “wrong” way at first, and it was very crumbly 🙁 But once I mixed everything in the right order, it turned out amazing! I will say that I thought 2 TB of sugar was a bit too sweet for myliking, so next time, I will decrease it by half a TB. And I’m wondering if using an artificial sweetener like Splenda will work as well? Overall, a great recipe! Now, I have to go and make more for the rest of the family! ;P
This was the best mug cookie recipe I have found! Like warm gooey cookies. I followed the recipe exactly except because I am at a high altitude added about a 1/2 tsp of water. Perfect! Thanks for the great quick sugar fix.
Just made these tonight because my daughter really wanted one of those hot cookies with ice cream on top, like you get at some restaurants. It fit the craving perfectly. I did add a splash of vanilla, as some had suggested. And did your suggestion of making 2 at a time, so I could use a whole egg. I would definitely make it again.
do not try this recipe it melts and turns to liquid
I tried this recipe last night and the cookie didn’t rise or fully cook at all. I feel like this recipe is missing a leavening agent. I’ll be looking for another one.
I tried it with a friend and it didn’t cook and looked like trash and tasted bad. You could cook the for an hour in a microwave oven and it still won’t cook. They were so dry so we had to add extra things so it would form a cookie dough. Don’t do this recipe!!!!!!
Trying things with my friends that look like trash and taste bad is basically my life story, so, I HEAR YOU Karen. Come to think of it, my sista’ squad and I are just a few steps above raccoons. Only, those cute little trash pandas have smaller circles around their eyes (it’s the kids’ fault, Karen. Why. Won’t. They. Sleep.).
That said, and while I would never want to pour tea on a fellow trash tasting GF, you mentioned that these mug cakes would not cook for you, yet were dry at the same time. If they were dry, may I suggest that perhaps you overcooked them? They should be – I’m loath to say it – moist.
The fact that you hyperbolized cooking them for an hour did raise a red flag. After all, an hour in a microwave is usually too much time for about anything unless you are nuking an entire turkey (shout-out to allrecipes.com for that gem of an idea. Radiation flavored turkey? Um, YES PLZ). Speaking of which, Mel, you should really consider more microwavable recipes. I tried microwaving your popular french bread recipe, and let’s just say, zero stars. I blame you for not foreseeing my folly and advising against it.
Honestly, mug cakes and cookies are a get-what-you-pay-for-scenario. Actively crying and need carbs, like, RN? Mug cookie. Have 30 minutes and any sense of taste/decency? Real cookie. Promised kids cookies that you never ended up making? Mug cookie. Made amazing real cookies that you promised to share with the kids? Still mug cookie. Children don’t appreciate amazing things enough to deserve them.
I…can’t…breathe.
In a good way. Thank you. Also, can I interest you in one of my children? More cookies for me, if either variety.
This was really nice for a quick way to satiate my sweet tooth, thank you for this recipe! Here are some things I did to add a little extra flavor:
– a sprinkle of sea salt subbed for table salt was delicious!
– a dash of vanilla helped bring the all the cookie elements together!
– I always add a dusting of cinnamon to my cookies because it goes well with the chocolate, and it’s nice in this recipe too!
– adding a heaping spoonful (or three) of ice cream as suggested worked so nicely, and it fit comfortably in the mug with the cookie!
Making this delicious treat and sitting in my kitchen while reading the hilarious comments was the best part of my day! Seriously, the best! My sweet tooth is satisfied and I might have spit a little laughing so hard.
I’m going to challenge the ones who are being rude and nasty to maybe consider what went wrong on your end instead of Mel’s. Because obviously, this recipe worked well for the majority of people trying it, including myself. If your cookie didn’t cook or rise, it’s probably your flour. Throw in 1/2 a teaspoon of baking powder and see what happens. Your flour is either not all purpose or self rising, or it’s old. The amount of sweetness is completely just preference, so why rate the recipe so low just because it didn’t suit your taste? Omit half the sugar and go on with your life, Karen. People are so rude, I can’t stand it…
TIA, I think my comment might have posted as a reply to yours for some reason, and I didn’t mean to do that. Sorry!
I love this. Dangerous that it’s so easy to make. Suggestions for the disaffected:
1. Add a splash of vanilla
2. Undercook a bit to keep the gooey vibe
3. Don’t expect an actual cookie. It’s in a mug, for goodness sake. It’s a delicious treat that is chocolate chip cookie flavor.
Soooo good!
So I made this when I had a last minute sweet craving. I undercooked it slightly and added an additional pinch of pink Himalayan salt on the top and 1/2 T of chopped walnuts on top. OH MY… dangerously good
This is great for a quick recipe to satisfy a sugar tooth. Impressed.
it’s not the end of the world if you accidentally add the whole egg. i did it on accident & it made more of a cookie cake. weird but not bad.
The closest recipe that’s texture somewhat resembles an oven baked cookie. Usually you get chocolate chip cakes in stead of cookies with these microwave recipes. The cookie dough is not as sweet which pairs well with the chocolate. It would have been excellent with the vanilla ice cream, but was still delicious with a cold glass of milk.
These people are total scammers this recipe sucks! You should not suggest egg yolks to people!
I agree, Sam. I strongly believe that egg yolks are leading to the downfall of society.
Millions *possibly billions* of egg whites are wasted every year as bakers pursue round yellow fat globules without any regard to the surrounding, mucus-y, albumin that makes an egg whole. These wasted whites could feed millions upon millions of dieters and provide up to 3.7 calories a day per person if put to a better use.
Egg shells are washed mercilessly down garbage disposals, which MANY EGGVOCATES believe has elevated the calcium levels of our reservoirs. Increased water calcification led my sister to grow teeth in her lower intestines. The media does not want you to know about this. But it is happening everywhere.
The yolk is on us if we do not do something NOW to stop bloggers from suggesting egg yolks. We cannot walk on egg shells while bloggers perpetuate these scams. When this story breaks, there will be egg on all their faces. Their defenses are already starting to crack!

Thank you for adding common sense to the Internet.
You, my friend, are an amazing human being.
This unexpected comedy has made my night. Not so much my husband’s though—my loud snort-laugh woke him up. I held it together for most of it, but when I got to “POOTY”, all heck broke loose!
For a mug cake, it wasnt too bad. I added 2 tbsp of nutella and it came out perfect. Mine was not at all cake ish, and still tasted like a cookie.
It didn’t work at all:(
Mine turned out good and I ended up making it a few times and perfecting it. I think the texture is moister and nicer with a splash of milk a bit more butter, and less flour.
Very nice recipe. I recommend adding more chocolate chips and a splash of milk to make it more gooey and soft.
It was extremely dry and crumbly – felt like I was eating flour
Definitely tasted like a chocolate chip pancake, not a chocolate chip cookie.
AWESOME must make recipe when in need for a sweet tooth
My mug cake came out really crumbly and dry. I followed the recipe exactly. Kind of disappointed and wanting to try again. Even though I followed the recipe exactly. Any tips?
I think you should add a bit of water or milk. It came out like that for me as well when I followed the recipe, but you should add least a tablespoon of some liquid and hopefully, it will come out better!
Hi Min Suga, off topic, but do you know BTS?
I stumbled on your comment after Mel’s suggestion to see the comments for this recipe, which I remember making years ago when it first came out.
This cookie came out perfect! It is more of a cakey texture but it’s understandable.
for me it was a bit crumbly, but it tasted really good! if only i had vanilla ice cream :> i also added a splash of vanilla for taste, and i reccomend it! i’m 12 and have no idea how to bake whatsoever but this turned out way better than i expected lmao
Not good at all!
With all the chocolate and ice cream in the world couldn’t save this recipe. There’s no milk, no vanilla extract, or even baking powder/soda! It smells very eggy once you cook it. Not good!
for me it was a bit crumbly, but it tasted really good! if only i had vanilla ice cream :>
Worked just as advertised. It was very sweet, but close enough to a just-cooked chocolate chip cookie. It definitely needs ice cream or whipped cream. And for me it’s two servings, not one. Thanks. (Not sure if my ranking is right because it doesn’t have a number by the bubbles.)
Very bland and had an odd texture almost like an odd dough. Don’t recommend
Good for if you are desperate for a cookie
I’ve made this twice now and it came out perfectly both times! The first time, I ate it plain, today, I added chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Wow! My only complaint is that it’s so easy I have it memorized and I’ll be tempted to make one every night since it’s so quick
I made this with gf flour and the coconut oil. I haven’t had such a good dessert in awhile. I don’t eat baked goods or treats very often since being gf and df, so this was awesome! Thanks.
Oh awesome! Thanks for adding your comment. GF now too and always wonder what is worth switching out and what isn’t.
Not sure what I did wrong, I got more of a thick soup and it… Expanded everywhere? Left a mess but it was good!
I did add a tiny bit of milk, but I don’t think that that’s what caused it?
Uuuhhh, yeah, it was the milk.
2 Tbsp of chocolate chips is a little too much for me but otherwise pretty good
I accidentally put in a whole egg lol
But it still came out tasting good
I’ll think I’ll make this again
This is the only microwave cookie worth eating! Bless you, sweet lady. The one I just tried to eat was a vile, rubbery pancake. Yours is amazing!!
