60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
You are only a minute or so away from a decadent, delicious, chocolate chip mug cookie made start-to-finish in a mug and “baked” in the microwave!
Whether or not you are on a no sweets, healthy eating, juice detox, cabbage only (don’t do it) diet this month, I’m a firm believer that it is ok to allow yourself a bit of indulgence every now and then.
Says the girl who probably indulged a bit too much in December.
Instead of making a whole batch of cookies and having them stare you in the face for three days straight while you try to figure out every which way to avoid the temptation, the next time you need a little sweetsie something, consider this 60-second chocolate chip mug cookie.
Made in a mug.
Cooked in the microwave.
Warm and melty, this mug cookie is luxurious with a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt. Like any mug cake/cookie, it tastes best eaten right away.
I’ll leave it up to you whether or not you decide to share.
No judging here.
Not all microwave mug confections are created equal (I’ve tried some pretty bad ones in my day) but I’m a serious fan of this chocolate chip cookie version.
It’s right up there with this decadent Nutella mug cake and this homemade Funfetti vanilla one, and all three variations make me happy that I can have a warm cookie in just minutes.
Really, it’s just a whole lot of chocolate chip cookie comfort in a mug.

60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) melted butter or coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) brown sugar
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup (36 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons (21 g) chocolate chips, regular size or mini
Instructions
- Very lightly coat the inside of a 6- or 8-ounce mug or ramekin with a smidgeon of cooking spray, butter or coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients together in the mug (to avoid the batter being crumbly, mix the butter, egg yolk, sugars and salt first before gradually stirring in the flour and adding the chocolate chips).
- Microwave for one minute at 80% power (I have a 1,000 watt microwave; if your microwave has more or less watts, you may need to adjust the time a bit). The top will look light and yellow and may even seem undercooked but if you gently press the top and it lightly springs back, it’s perfect (don’t overcook or it will be dry and tough in spots).
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Recipe Source: sent to me by a blog reader, Jill (thanks!) – I added the coconut oil option
This recipe was SOOO good! I didnt have brown sugar so i added extra butter and extra sugar. I also added milk to the mug after I cooked it. I will be making this again.
This was my first mug “cookie” (or cake, as the case may be). I love to bake, and do it frequently, but don’t always need 2 dozen cookies around. So, I tried this to see if it sinks satisfy a craving, and I was pleasantly surprised. While it’s not a cookie (more like dense cake), the flavor was good, it fixed my sweet tooth, and it was super quick. I did add a bit of vanilla extract to it, and that may have helped the flavor.
Bottom line: while it’s not a chocolate chip cookie (manage your expectations, people), it’s really pretty decent and it’ll do in a pinch. I’d make it again.
This is a mug cake so the expectations are obviously not the best; however, if you make a small batch of cream cheese frosting to pair with this cookie. It is definitely worth having as a midnight snack.
I lied don’t make the frosting, it’s tasty but not worth the extreme diarrhea
Lol.. poor you.
First thing I thought was sounds too sweet. Love cream cheese frosting but the frosting but the chips, I’d just be asking for trouble lol
I don’t know why all the comments are so negative. It’s a mug cake. If you’re expecting it to be a legit baked cookie MAKE COOKIES. Good Lord people. It was fine! I added some vanilla and it definitely helped!
This recipe is such a pos. I made the “cookie” and it was so bad that I threw it away and then I cried. Thank you for wasting my last chocolate chips..
That’s a bit dramatic and harsh…
That time of the month?
Unnecessary…….
It was okay. It did the job, satisfied my craving. Not great though and next time I’ll just make regular cookies.
I’ve been cooking for 6 years and I’ve never tasted a cookie that taste this god awful. The texture is cake like. The actual taste it’s self doesn’t taste like a cookie. I don’t think I’ll make it again.
I loved this recipe. It was totally all I needed for my craving and I actually liked the consistency a lot. Thank you!
I will say this is very good but I do recommend adding like 1/8 tsp of vanilla extract!
Do you need the egg?
Listen, this isn’t a cookie. It’s a mug cake. Don’t start off expecting you’re going to get a cookie in the end. Do I think the author should have used a work other than cookie? Yes. Do I think it’s a big deal that it doesn’t have a cookie crunch? No. I used a splash of milk instead of egg. I find egg makes the texture chewier than I like. I also added a splash of vanilla. However, for a mug cake, I don’t think it turned out too bad. I opted to cook my cake a little more so it would dry out a little inside. It turned out tasting slightly more “cookieish” to me. Overall, the flavor isn’t bad and the texture wasn’t super duper chewy.
i have no idea how to bake and this still turned out amazing, thank you!
This is so good! I added whipped cream on top. This was exactly what I needed tonight, thanks!
Followed the recipe exactly and it came out very dry and grainy. I don’t know it is because of my mom microwave or something like that.
I also added whipped cream. It turned a bad day right around. Now, I just need to keep these ingredients out of my house to resist the temptation to eat it all the time.
This was so, so good and turned out exactly as pictured!
It was great people are being really wack in this review section. Like what were they expecting a mug cookie to be. It’s not going to be some gourmet meal but it’s fine.
I made this recipe for myself. So good!!! I added 1/8 tsp vanilla extract before microwaving it. This was awesome, and it tasted like one of my family’s homemade cookies straight out of the oven. Will be making again, for me and my family!
Mine kinda turned out more like cake than cookie texture.
I’ve tried several mug cakes and cookies and always been disappointed…..NOT THIS TIME! It was so fast and so good. Just the thing to satisfy a craving. As many reviewers said it’s obviously not a baked cookie, microwaved foods are different than oven baked. Adjust your expectations and it’s delish! The only thing I might add is a dash of vanilla next time.
This was delicious and dangerously TOO EASY! I did modify a little with dark and white chocolate chips and a few drops of vanilla. I don’t want (or need) this to become a habit. 🙂
I made this because I was craving a cookie and this definitely satisfied my hunger. My only complaint was that I added less flour than the recipe called for and it was still a little to crumbly for me. Other than that, its a delicious snack that will satisfy your hunger 🙂
Made this twice this week – which is why I can’t make a whole batch of cookies, no self control! I added a tiny drop of vanilla the second time and it was perfect. This will be my go-to now! Quick, easy, and delicious. My husband said it reminded him of a brownie texture with a chocolate chip taste
I almost burnt my house down. But I’m severely upset with myself that I couldn’t even do this. Thanks for the recipe though it’s probably great.
Wonderful for sweet tooth cravings! Will make again
I’m pregnant and had a chocolate chip cookie craving- but who has time to actually bake when you’re exhausted? This recipe did the trick! I added extra chocolate chips (because why not?) and added an additional 30 seconds at 80% power on my microwave. Thanks for sharing! Would make again
Love this and I make it all the time! However, I have such a sweet tooth and want to double it would I put it in the microwave twice as long or how would that work?
Thanks for my fav mug cookie!
Do you have a mug big enough for doubling? If so, I’d probably keep the time the same at first to see and then maybe add 10 second increments if needed.
Tried it…. I think I’ll just eat a handful of chocolate chips next time.
Mine was way to chocolate-y too it was good but if I do decide to make it again I’m only adding 1 TBL of chocolate chips
This was perfect for a quick sweet tooth fix! Will definitely make it again! I put chocolate and toffee mini chips in it with a drizzle of Carmel sauce on top….yum!
I love making this cookie a whole lot, its super quick and easy and I love it a lot. Its super delicious, thanks for sharing it ❤
Wow these comments are giving me a junior high flashback, ha. First time I’ve ever made a mug cake or cookie so I have nothing to compare it to and it was pretty darn good. I used a basic ol mug, and followed the recipe exactly even the steps she posted. My hubby loved it and I thought it tasted pretty darn good. I only added two chocolate chips, because I don’t like chocolate, ha ha. So rich I only had three bites and then I shared the rest with my hungry mini savages, aka my children, who also enjoyed it. I bake every week this was a solid 8/10.
I chose this recipe because I am out of vanilla extract and it didn’t use any! I also used chocolate chunks which are quite a bit bigger than chips, so I think I will use just a few less next time. My first time making it was a little bit dry, I’ll try cooking for less time when I make it again. But a wonderful and quick cookie fix!
I shall make this tomorrow for Mr Boopie. You are such a genius. Thank you in advance for this wonderful recipe., not a doubt in my mind…take care!
Thanks for the recipe! I don’t think it’s my favorite, but I was feeling snackish and this fit the bill nicely.
So we made this last night, cause there never has been a Mel fail. It was exactly as advertised – a quick, delicious treat for a sweet tooth, best eaten while hot and NOT to be overcooked. It was delicious with vanilla ice cream. It wasn’t as wonderful as a baked cookie, but it also only took me 2 mins total and on dish to wash! It was a score in our books.
Thanks for the review, Rebecca! 🙂
To all the naysayers: this sweet little gem is microwaved, not baked- a completely different cooking method than is used to bake traditional cookies. Baking is a science. Tweak things, and you can expect the result to be different. Mug “cookies” are great for satisfying a craving, but if you want a COOKIE cookie, you have to bake, not microwave. 🙂
Just made this and devoured it! I don’t understand the negative comments. Followed the recipe and loved the results! This could be a nightly ritual! Thanks for sharing!
I really liked it 🙂
Yum! I made it GLUTEN free with almond flour. Also used coconut sugar (needed a bit more than the recipe called for). So so good!!!
I added a splash of vanilla almond milk to this just because the batter seemed a little thick. The texture was really interesting! Not so much cookie-like (because of the microwave), but similar to the texture of a fudgy brownie or cake. It definitely hit the spot for the sweet craving I had tonight.
This came out like a muffin. Not good at all unless you are looking for a muffin consistency.
added 3 tbsp instead of 4 tbsp of flour and it came out just perfect!
Definitely wasn’t the best recipe in the world. It was sweet and just doughy enough to pass as a real cookie. But I would recommend using egg whites instead of the yolk. This removes that egg taste that this recipe gives. A little less flour also helps as well. However, if you follow the recipe step by step, it isn’t all that great.
Satisfied my craving for something sweet. I added a tablespoon of walnuts. Put it in for two monutes, I think one and a half would have been perfect. Sadly out of vanilla ice cream!
Delish! Thank you so much…it didn’t taste like a real cookie but it came close
Came out granular and dry. Might be my microwave settings but wouldn’t make again.
Not a good recipe. Very floury with an very eggy taste. I make mug cakes ALL the time, it’s a great way to get a fast something and avoid eating a whole pan… was looking for a chocolate chip cookie recipe, I’ll definitely be continuing to look. Yuck!
I have tried a handful of these recipes over the last 5 years without finding one that was really perfect. This one is now the top of the list. Cooked perfectly and was the perfect balance of ingredients.
This is so good, better than the other recipe I tried. I added vanilla and adjusted the cook time a bit.
Terrible. Tasted like flour; more like a bland version of a chocolate chip cookie. Even following the recipe… I’m not sure what I could have done differently. Won’t be making this again.
I made this and couldn’t even eat it. Once I took it out of the microwave, it was like when you make a mold of something. The cookie itself was like the soft, firm bits you pull off of the actual cast piece. It was disgusting. I took one bite and threw it away.
Sounds wonderful and will be trying! Do you have a similar recipe for peanut butter or sugar mug cookies?
I don’t – sorry!
Missing vanilla
Pretty good, It’s missing something, but as a baker, I wasn’t expecting the “real” thing lol. Texture was fine, I actually added a bit more flour because it looked too runny at first ( whole egg). It came out nicely, just gotta figure out that missing taste. Probably one of the baking powders/sodas that give it that little bump of saltiness, even with the salt. Long story short, it filled the craving for something warm, kind of gooey and having chocolate chips lol.
For a mug recipe this was delicious.
Very good! Could have been my mistake but it seemed a little crumbly. Regardless, the flavor totally made up for any textural thing. The only thing I added was a few finely chopped walnuts.,
