60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
You are only a minute or so away from a decadent, delicious, chocolate chip mug cookie made start-to-finish in a mug and “baked” in the microwave!
Whether or not you are on a no sweets, healthy eating, juice detox, cabbage only (don’t do it) diet this month, I’m a firm believer that it is ok to allow yourself a bit of indulgence every now and then.
Says the girl who probably indulged a bit too much in December.
Instead of making a whole batch of cookies and having them stare you in the face for three days straight while you try to figure out every which way to avoid the temptation, the next time you need a little sweetsie something, consider this 60-second chocolate chip mug cookie.
Made in a mug.
Cooked in the microwave.
Warm and melty, this mug cookie is luxurious with a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt. Like any mug cake/cookie, it tastes best eaten right away.
I’ll leave it up to you whether or not you decide to share.
No judging here.
Not all microwave mug confections are created equal (I’ve tried some pretty bad ones in my day) but I’m a serious fan of this chocolate chip cookie version.
It’s right up there with this decadent Nutella mug cake and this homemade Funfetti vanilla one, and all three variations make me happy that I can have a warm cookie in just minutes.
Really, it’s just a whole lot of chocolate chip cookie comfort in a mug.

60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) melted butter or coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) brown sugar
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup (36 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons (21 g) chocolate chips, regular size or mini
Instructions
- Very lightly coat the inside of a 6- or 8-ounce mug or ramekin with a smidgeon of cooking spray, butter or coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients together in the mug (to avoid the batter being crumbly, mix the butter, egg yolk, sugars and salt first before gradually stirring in the flour and adding the chocolate chips).
- Microwave for one minute at 80% power (I have a 1,000 watt microwave; if your microwave has more or less watts, you may need to adjust the time a bit). The top will look light and yellow and may even seem undercooked but if you gently press the top and it lightly springs back, it’s perfect (don’t overcook or it will be dry and tough in spots).
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Recipe Source: sent to me by a blog reader, Jill (thanks!) – I added the coconut oil option
Don’t make this, it’s disgusting. If the dough tastes like nothing you know the cookie will taste like nothing. I made zero changes to the recipe and it’s a tasteless, dry, gross cookie. It made me feel physically sick after a few bites. Wow.
Unbelievably dry and crumbly. Would make a great bread crumbs recipe it’s so damn dry. Followed the recipe to a T, even added quite a bit of milk because it didn’t look anywhere near a cookie batter. It was actually microwaved for less than a minute so it wouldn’t overcook but no use. Microwaved, it looks ok but i take a scoop and it all breaks apart. Completely tasteless other than the chocolate, It’s really just flour and chocolate. DO NOT make if you want a cookie unless you want to be disappointed, or just want tasteless crumbs.
The finished product is nowhere near this perfect looking cookie. Followed the directions to a T, even added quite a bit of milk since it was so dry i couldn’t even get it off my spoon. Microwaved, it looks fine but i take a scoop and its like melted chocolate+plain flour. Most dry, crumbly cookie recipe I’ve seen.
I followed the recipe to a tee and it turned out terribly. I never even got it out of my cup. Probably the worst thing I’ve eaten, ever.
I used the coconut oil option. It came out perfect. Not crumbly at all.
We just made this and it came out perfect! Thank you!!
Lol yeah this is an absolutely horrible recipe. AVOID
I thought this recipe was lovely! Obviously not as good as an oven-baked cookie, but if I want those cookies I’ll make them. Ive tried mug cookies before and they weren’t good at all. At least this one was enjoyable! I used coconut oil instead of butter, so I think next time I’ll use butter to get that delicious extra flavor! Didnt have any ice cream so I used whipped cream and it was lovely!
I just can’t with these comments. Almost crying with laughter. Oh my goodness, Mel, how do you keep up with this hot mess?
But to the point: Made as written and it worked like a charm. I only wish I had some ice cream! But it’s good solo.
Uhhh, I burned my cookie in my microwave, and kinda started a fire in my house… I don’t know what happened. I turn around for just a second, and boom. There’s smoke coming out of the Microwave, and the smell of burnt popcorn hits me. The fire alarm immediately starts blaring. I pick up the mug and throw it in the sink and turn on the water as fast as possible to not burn my hands, and hell, I even went to my fridge and threw some ice in there as well.
why rate the recipe a 1 star? if yours started burning you probably didn’t use a microwave safe mug. Your fault not the recipe’s…
This is a delicious little snack. Beyond me how commenters change the recipe then complain. Wonderful as long as you follow the recipe and don’t over cook
So… I might have quadrupled it… twice… within an hour… it said no judging stop looking at me like that. I overcooked but it was still the best mug dessert I’ve ever had
So I might have quadrupled the recipe. I overcooked but this is still the best mug cookie/cake I have ever had
Yum! For a quick fix, this recipe does the job! I regularly bake chocolate chip cookies, so I am not unfamiliar with how this dough should go together. Wet, mix, then dry, mix – stick to that and you will be fine. My only changes were adding a small bit of vanilla and using mini m&m’s rather than chocolate chips.
it was really good i had some of it with icecream if anyone knows how many calories are in this thatd be great
This was not good. I’m thinking tasty microwaved baked goods are a pipe dream.
Ok, so I did not have any eggs so I had to use a tbsp of oil then I added a splash of vanilla. Other than that I did the exact same thing. After making it, it LOOKED awesome! Great for pictures if that all you want. I tried it. SUPERR dry! Crumbly and dry. I then added milk over the top. After that it tasted okay. It gave it a cookie dough texture though. All in all, do not try this recipe!
You left out the egg though…how are you going to give two stars to a recipe where you left out an ingredient?
Hi so I made this recipe and it turned out really well! I would recommend some things, it you burnt it try going 30 secs at a time and maybe add some vanilla, maple or almond extract. I also recommend adding a little more than a tablespoon of butter so that it’s not dry or crumbly. It’s not the perfect recipe but with some tweaking it tastes really good!
very bad. it’s so hard and crumbly and i followed it perfectly. I wish i read the comments first.
This is an OK mug cookie but is very crumbly
This recipe was not too good. When it came out, it tasted more like bread than an actual cookie. It was not that tasty and I would not recommend it.
This was a quick and delicious cookie ‘fix’ without having to devour an entire batch recipe. I’m celiac and substituted Cup4Cup gluten free flour. The recipe still turned out great! Thx!
it was good! very filling and sweet, but the consistency was good and there were no complaints from me. obviously not the best cookie ever, but great for a sweet fix. i’m not sure why there are so many negative comments.
Made some changes as I didn’t feel like cracking an egg.
Added 1/2 extra scoop brown sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla
Substituted egg for 1TBSB half and half cream
Pinch of baking powder
More of a Chewy caramel like texture- very yummy.
it’s puzzling to me why so many bad reviews on this recipe. Either me or my kids make this little treat at least three or four times a week after dinner. Is it a gourmet, life changing, award winngin dessert? No. But is it a simple, fast, and tasty way to get a sweet fix? yep. We love it. and I’m not exaggerating when I say we’ve made it 40+ times over the years. My theory for why it isn’t working out for some is 1) too much flour. We’ve learned our lesson the hard way on that one (like when my 4-year old helps measure). the flour shouldn’t be packed in, just lightly measure it. And if the dough is still dry and crumbling add a splash of milk. 2) cook it on lower power for your microwave. It should just be soft baked and melty. Not trying to be judgy. But I can’t see how anyone could mess this up. it’s easy and our favorite after dinner treat.
This cookie was very good, I mean as good a chocolate chip cookie could be for being made in a mug. When I made this recipe I doubled all of the ingredients because mug cakes are usually a bit small, and I found it to be really delicious. But I also had to cook it in the microwave for an extra minute. Totally recommend!
it was okay for a cookie in a mug. keep in mind that this was SO filling. after eating the whole cookie i felt like throwing up. also it was VERY sweet. id recommend cutting the recipe in half and trying that before you go in with the big recipe.
i look up mug cake and got this recipe for some reason, i didn’t realize it was a mug cookie not a cake, so at first i thought it didn’t work but then i realized it was for a mug cookie, so i think most of the negative reviews were referring to a mug cake. overall for a mug COOKIE recipe it was pretty good
Wish I would have read comments before. Wasn’t very good and disappointed.
This was a soggy wet mess. How do you remove this from the top searches?
Y’all just need to calm down. This is not the most amazing cookie you’ve ever had in your lifetime. It was created to fill a quick need for a single chocolate chip cookie. I subbed plant milk for the egg along with a smidge of ground flax seed. I also added a tiny splash of water, along with some tiny homemade toffee squares and a few chocolate chips. Yumm! It hit the spot, especially with scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. If you want a real chocolate chip cookie then search for Mels chocolate chip cookie recipes, make the dough, scoop it all out, and freeze it on pans in the freezer. Then you can pull one out whenever you have a craving for that perfect chocolate chip cookie you’re obviously looking for. Problem solved!
I made this and followed the directions to the T. The “cookie” came out pancake like. Except wit tasted like uncocked flower.
Awful. Did not work. Was very disappointed
Wow, I’m just speechless. I attempted this recipe THREE times and each cookie ended up terrible and resulted in a bad stomachache. So thank you everyone that rated this cookie 4/5 stars! You tricked me into believing I would at least get a semi descent cookie that didn’t taste like Play-dough. The texture was both wet and dry, it was like trying to eat drying cement.
I had a great laugh at your comment hahah !! Thank you for that honesty! My daughter and I were about to try it, then we read a few comments, now we will try a different recipe haha! Thanks!!
This recipe was very bad- I tried it twice, this time in 30 second intervals and it does not taste good. I’d recommend using another recipe.
If only I had read the comments before attempting this monstrosity of a cookie.
This ends up more like a mug cake than a mug cookie. I think the sugar:flour ratio is too low—should work better with only 3tbsp flour instead of 1/4 cup, closer to a regular cookie recipe
I’ve tried a lot of mug cookies/ cake recipes and this is by far the absolute best one I’ve tried yet!! Would love to see more recipes you create!
Was more like a cake than a cookie, but it satisfied my craving ♀️
Wow!So yummy.Mmm I was craving something sweet. And the first thing that came to my mind when I tries this was YUMMMMMMMY
🙂
Tried it as written, just added a couple drops of vanilla and it didn’t really work. The dough was crumbly even after mixing the wet alone and slowly adding flour. I put it in my microwave (700 watts) for a minute and a half. It looked completely unchanged so I put it back in full power for another 30. Still nothing, never came together. Thought I’d try it anyway because hey, I love raw cookie dough too and I’m not super picky but it just tasted bland. I used coconut oil because I had it on hand and that was basically all I could taste. It was like coconutty mush coated in chocolate because the chips all melted. I took a few bites and just pitched the rest.
Looking at other comments, maybe using a full egg and a raising agent like baking powder would at least help the consistency. I’d probably try butter next time for the flavor. Maybe a bit more salt too.
Only good thing from this is that it kept me from breaking my diet like I was going to. It’s not worth the calories.
love this recipe! I have made it so many times with great results. If anyone is interested in avoiding the egg yolk you can add about a tablespoon and a half of whole milk instead, works perfectly!
I looked to the comments before I tried this, and my expectations were low but I was desperate for a sweet treat in a jiffy with the things I had on hand.
I would agree that it’s a little more on the cake side. I was ready to make a double batch in one mug but I’m glad I didn’t because she did puff up almost double.
I also would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this with a Lil drop of vanilla and dark chocolate instead, it’s a vibe. My microwave also isn’t as powerful so I went for another 30 seconds and was pleasantly surprised when I touched and it bounced back. Not sure what all the fuss is about in the comments tbh
Not a good cookie in a mug. Terrible flavor.
This looks so good! I really want to try it with Nutella in the middle
Disgusting
This was delicious! Perfect for a late night craving. I suggest using unsalted butter, and adding vanilla! Make sure to let it cool completely before eating it. Awesome recipe!
Not even close to a cookie. Not good. Needs a lifting agent. Also extremely grainy and dry. What a let down.
To be honest this recipe is terrible. First of all the consistency is weird and is more like pancake batter. Second after it’s cooked it’s REALLY dry. Not to mention bland. I even added some vanilla for flavor and not even that helped. In all its more like a cake than a cookie and I don’t suggest making it. Especially since it gave me and my mom a stomach ache.
This recipe was not that good. It was very dry and Very Grainy! I also got a small stomachache after eating it. I do not recommend this recipe if you want a good dessert.
It was so delicious ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
THE RECIPE WAS TERRIBLE! IT WAS SO HARD EVEN AFTER I COOKED IT ONLY FOR A MINUTE. NOT ONLY THAT BUT I HAD STOMACH ACHE AFTER EATING IT.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE IT
I agree. I had this same problem.
This is actually a really good recipe and it tast good it just smells a bit odd but whatever you know
added a splash of vanilla, and used only brown sugar for more flavor. will use less flour next time! not amazing, but good enough to satisfy the craving
Made this gluten free by adding oat flour instead, came out great! Thanks for the recipe.
It was very dry and bland. I’d recommend putting a splash of vanilla to add more flavor. Overall, it was convenient to make at 3 am without waking my family. I would recommend if you’re in a pinch.
Absolutely terrible recipe
We used a whole quail egg in each batter instead of an egg yolk – worked perfectly !
Thanks for the fantastic recipe ♡
