Friday Thoughts: Tap, Tap, Is This Thing On?
It’s been forever since the last Friday Thoughts post (I know, I always say that!), so I am particularly excited for today. I love hearing from you in the comments every time one of these posts goes up.
Below are some life updates, random thoughts, and some things I’m loving lately.
As always: TELL ME WHAT IS NEW IN YOUR LIFE! I love to hear it. All of it.
A Few Little Updates to Start
The weather is finally cooling down, which means one thing: it’s finally hoodie season! Hoodies and sweatshirts and joggers. My love language. Have you seen these adorable pocketed sweatshirts? Gah. So flipping cute. I have the “spread kindness” one, and it makes me want to kiss the person who invented pockets in sweatshirts.
I recently helped two of my friends with food for a wedding reception. The bride and groom wanted a dessert waffle bar at the reception. It was so fun…and so yummy! The week before, I mixed up the dry ingredients for a 20X batch of the dry ingredients for these best-ever waffles (goal was to feed 350-400 people, and it was about spot on!).
The night of, we mixed the wet ingredients with the dry for the waffles and had a couple waffle iron stations set up on different circuits. We started cooking the waffle about 45 minutes before the reception started and kept the waffles warm and semi-crisp set on cooling racks in a warm oven. We separated the larger circle waffles into quarters, and we also used an adorable heart-shaped waffle maker {aff. link} and a small circle waffle maker {aff. link}.
Toppings consisted of: diced fresh peaches, sliced strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, nutella (key is to warm it up a bit for easier serving), cookie butter, mini chocolate chips, toffee bits, spray-can whipped cream, buttermilk syrup (a 10X batch was plenty!), triple berry syrup (Kodiak brand) and a divine huckleberry syrup the groom’s mom made.
These cute Kraft paper food trays {aff. link} were used for serving, and we served ice water and orange juice with fresh oranges sliced on top for the beverages. The waffle bar was a hit!
We have a four day school week, and I have big feelings about that. Our Fridays are generally spent with morning sports practices, finishing homework, helping clean the house (kids take turns cleaning their bathroom, vacuuming and dusting), and completing various outside farm/yard chores, while I try to convince everyone that it is a normal week day for the majority of the world and not a party-it-up extra weekend day. Do any of you have four day school weeks? What are your thoughts?
If you’re looking for a good book, I recently listened to Killers of the Flower Moon about the Osage murders and birth of the FBI and WOW. A must-read in my opinion. Eye opening and so, so interesting (and shocking).
If I’m being honest, motherhood has rocked my world the last little while. It’s not necessarily a bad thing…but it’s causing me to stretch and grow as I learn a lot about myself and my kids. My latest goal has been to connect with each of my kids every day, one-on-one, even if it is just for a few minutes. Doing so has helped me be more intentional about putting down my phone and making eye contact and conversation with my teenage boys (Cam is always up for a good chat, haha). I’m also trying to give more hugs and less lectures to everyone.
Parenting is hard! If you’re feeling in the muddy thick of things (and second guessing everything), just know you aren’t alone. I repeat the following phrases to myself daily: “Where we are now is not forever” and “Meet them where they’re at” and “Eat more chocolate.”
>>>I just finished this book {aff. link} and it has been a game changer for me in rethinking how I react to and parent my teenagers.<<<
Skin Cancer Update
A few months ago, I went in to get a small spot checked on my upper lip. The dermatologist performed a quick biopsy and the results came back as basal cell carcinoma.
It was not the news I wanted, dang it, especially given my past experience with basal cell and MOHS surgery.
I had MOHS surgery on the pesky spot almost two weeks ago, and it went so much better than my anxiety led me to believe it would! The MOHS surgeon got all the cancer in one pass, and I ended up with eight stitches. Pretty much best case scenario, in my book.
The stitches were removed earlier this week, and I already can’t believe how well it is healing! Right now I’m covering it with Aquaphor and staying out of the sun. I’m also supposed to be careful of how wide my mouth opens when I eat, talk, and laugh – I’ll give you one guess how well that is going.
The dermatologist/surgeon who operated told me silicone gel sheets + light massaging of the scar site (to break up scar tissue) are the best recommendations for healing, so I’ll start doing both of those next week.
Onward and upward! I feel very grateful that it wasn’t nearly as bad as my first MOHS surgery!
Gift Guides
Is it too early to talk holiday gift guides? When do you do your holiday shopping?
Some years, I have it all done by October 1. Other years (ahem, this year), it’s looking more like third week of December.
I’m hoping to get my holiday gift guides up soon this year (maybe even next week in time for Prime Day) – but if not, they’ll be up by the end of October!
Any favorite things you are currently loving? Share them below in the comments!
I’ll give you a sneak peek of a few of my latest favorites that will definitely be on the gift guides.
{Affiliate links included below.}
Popdarts: such a fun, interactive game, especially with teens. Love this one!
Laser Measure: the little tool you never knew you needed. This thing is amazing – how have I lived so long without it?
Bliss Body Butter: I’ve given this lotion as gifts to so many people this year (and I use it myself). It is glorious. Thick and creamy without being greasy. The grapefruit “flavor” is my fave.
Small Sling Bag: I bought this a few months ago and have completely ditched all my other purses. I carry it everywhere, and although small, it can fit my phone, wallet, keys and a few other necessaries. It’s super cute!
ATM-Style Piggy Bank: This little money bank is not only adorable (comes in lots of colors), but it lets the kiddo set an electronic password (and it really works!). For a slightly more intense version, this ATM piggy bank from Lakeshore Learning is super fun. My sister’s kids have this one and love it!
Kitchen Remodel
Life isn’t crazy enough, so I decided last month that it would be a good idea to remodel our kitchen. 🤪
We moved to Idaho from Minnesota in 2014, and over the last nine years, we’ve remodeled several areas of our home in order to gain a bit more functional space and update a few things.
{If you are on Instagram, you’ll recognize some of these updates!}
Exhibit A. We busted into our garage to expand the pantry.
Exhibit B. We took out the wall between the living room and master bedroom to make a larger living room.
Exhibit C. We replaced the banister.
When it comes to the kitchen, we’ve done several small updates over the years, like cutting off the ledge on the island to level it, putting in granite countertops, refacing the cabinets.
But this time, we’re remodeling for real and knocking down a wall in order to add space to the existing kitchen. The green highlighted area is the wall we’re eliminating to make a larger kitchen.
While our kitchen up to this point has been wonderful (and far bigger than kitchens we’ve had in many of the houses we’ve lived in), and the new kitchen will likely be more kitchen than anyone really needs (haha), I am so excited to have double ovens (been waiting 25 years for those!), a few more cabinets, and additional work space.
Currently, we’ve made it through almost three weeks of the remodel. Three more weeks to go!
Right now, we have access to our fridge and a limited pantry. We’re eating very simple meals (think: cold cereal, Costco meals that can be heated up on a hot plate, lots of peanut butter sandwiches, toasted bagels, and some eating out here and there). And we’re washing our minimal dishes in the bathtub. Fun times!
The simple drawing below gives you an idea of what it will kind of look like when we’re done remodeling! And by we, I mean the awesome general contractor we hired (he’s done all of the remodels in our house over the last eight years; highly recommend him – Eric @ Remedy Residential – if you are local to the Boise, Idaho area).
Once it’s finished, I’ll share some details about the finishes we picked out. We’re keeping our fridge and dishwasher – the new appliances will be double ovens (eeek!), microwave, and cooking range (I’m going induction this time since we don’t have natural gas along our county road).
I have pretty simple tastes and live a really casual life, so the end result will hopefully be welcoming and homey.
And that’ll do it for this brief edition of Friday Thoughts! 😂 Thanks for being here, friends.
**Please promise me you’ll check back on Monday. I have a HUGE announcement! And I can’t wait for you to be part of it. 💗**
Love your updates Mel! It’s always great to hear about your life behind the food! Sorry to hear about the skin cancer, but glad your surgery and recovery went well!
Agree, life with teens is a whole new realm. And you do have to intentionally connect with them or they are off to their rooms doing their thing. I feel like I will miss these last year’s with them competing if I don’t intervene and ask how they are doing.
So excited to see your completed kitchen remodel. Double ovens do sound amazing!
Yes, love your gift guides and sweatshirts with pockets look super cozy!
Life is pretty good these days personally, lots of changes to weather, but massively improved health issues this year have made all the difference!
Hi Vickie!! Glad to know things are looking up for you and yours. It’s amazing how much better things look when health issues get resolved (or even somewhat resolved!). Thank you so much for being here!
We love the Popdarts game! I heard about it from TableTopFamily on Instagram. Looking forward to your gift guide to see if there are any other games I need to add to my game closet this year. Glad your surgery went well and good luck on the rest of your recovery!
Thank you!!
Love your updates. Excited for your new kitchen. Hope that’s not weird coming from a complete stranger who will never be seeing it in person ☺️ Sorry to hear about your Mohs surgery. My daughter-in-law is going in next week for the same surgery on her nose. I’ve never experienced Mohs surgery but I’ve had over 12 surgeries for skin cancer 2 of which were melanoma . So I understand what you are going through. You are a good mama and I’m confident you are doing better than you think. Have a great weekend!!
Not weird at all, Susan! I appreciate your kindness! It sounds like you’ve been through a lot of your own skin cancer surgeries and healing. I’m sure that’s helpful for your daughter-in-law to know she has your support. Good luck to her and her upcoming surgery!
Parenting teens is hard-emotionally draining! Especially teenage boys who grunt instead of express their feelings . Thanks for the book recommendation about helping teens develop emotionally. I’ve heard it this way— teens emotional/physical/social and psychological development is up and down, in and out, all over the map on a daily basis, for several years. Our job as parents, (and especially mothers who do the most interacting) is to create a safe space, a solid and grounded anchor for them to rely on while they ride the waves called puberty. Not allow ourselves to ride with them and get stuck in the drama. Thanks for sharing the real, raw, hard stuff. We’d be best friends if I lived in Idaho.
I needed to hear that, Rebecca. Thanks for the reminder!! I can be a safe, grounded space for my kids (even if I have to work at it instead of getting caught up in the moods). Loved what you shared!
Can’t wait to see your finished kitchen remodel pictures! Thank you so much for being willing to share your journey with MOHS surgery. So helpful and highlighting much needed awareness for others! Lastly, regarding parenting, I now have two amazing young adult sons, 24 and 26, and they are wonderful. One is a Registered Nurse and one works at a large CPA firm in Private Equity. Both have great careers, and my oldest son got married this summer so I gained a beautiful daughter-in-law! The bottom line is parenting is hard but with all of the struggles of raising our children in a world that is challenging as well, the reward is so wonderful! They will turn out to be great human beings, and all of the craziness of juggling homework, sports and activities, and absolutely everything in between, will be well worth it, I guarantee it 🙂
Rhonda H
Hi Rhonda! Thank you for sharing about your sons. They sound amazing (and so successful!). I love how different their careers are – they’ve both found their niche! Thanks for the boost of hope!
I had Mohs for white spots on the end of my nose and my left nostril. They ended up having to remove my entire nostril and 2 layers from the end of my nose. Had a skin flap cut from smile line and cartilage from my ear to recreate. Had 5 surgeries over 6 months. I have become a vampire since. It’s painful and scary. Glad that you are healing well. I would love to remodel our kitchen. It’s so small.
Oh, Shaelyn – so much love to you and prayers for your healing. I’m so sorry you have had to go through that and hope that your healing continues to progress. Sometimes life is so freaking unfair. Hang in there, friend.
Hey Mel – I love everything about your website – keep it up!! I love that you keep it real. My go-to for gifts lately has been this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VT6F26X?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1
Rechargeable frother. I take it with me when I travel – easy to mix up protein shakes or drinks of any kind!
Can’t wait to see what else makes the cut this year – I’m a frequent buyer off your lists – they never disappoint!
One more idea, as one can never have enough blankets – this one is slightly oversized, but not too big, and stays soft:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BZK2R6PP/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1QZ8QOQZOJTZU&th=1
Oh, very cool!! Thanks for the recommendation!
Happy healing – hope it continues going well!
Haven’t read her book (yet), but heard Lisa Damour on Kate Bowler’s Everything Happened podcast and it was a GREAT listen! Definitely recommend if you have a chance.
Will definitely listen!
Your Friday thoughts posts are my favorite. Although to be honest, the recipes are my favorite too. 🙂 I’m having the same type of year re: Christmas gifts. Maybe your gift guides will help me get going!
Haha, maybe it’ll help both of us!
Love the changes you have made in your home! Your procedure does not take away from your pretty face! Always there are those peaks and valleys in life. Much love to you and your family!
Wise words, Colleen. Thanks for your kindness!
Lucky you! We did a complete remodel on our kitchen about 10 years ago but my husband did the work. He did a great job but it was 6 months of doing dishes in the bathtub since he also worked full time with a fair amount of overtime. I still love my kitchen & am very grateful but that was not a fun time. Looks like you will have a wonderful space in a few short weeks, how fun!
Six months! Yes, you are amazing and deserve some kind of award!!
Love your Friday thoughts!
We’re in Boise and have regular 5 day weeks, but I think I’d love 4 day weeks. I feel like I never see my kids any more since school and sports take them away such long hours five days a week (and still sports on Saturday too!). Thanks for the book recommendation… always good to learn better ways to connect with our teens!
Yeah, that’s a good point. We’ve done the four day school week for enough years now that maybe if we went back to five days, I’d be sad? Hate it? Who knows. I guess the lesson is just to be grateful for whatever life is like. Haha. Not always good at that.
Can’t wait to hear the announcement on Monday! I’m sorry to hear of your skin cancer again. Isn’t Aquaphor amazing? I used it on my surgery scars (once I got the okay from the doc) and they are truly minimal in scarring. I’ve started using it for all my scrapes and nicks on my hands. I also use the Aquaphor lip therapy and it’s the first chapstick that doesn’t make me feel like I’m addicted to applying chapstick. lol Or rather doesn’t make me feel like I need to keep applying it. If you’ve ever been a chapstick person- you know what I mean. lol
Your kitchen remodel sounds amaz, ng! I love the idea of double wall ovens! It’s on my wish list if we were ever to move, as our current house would not lend itself to them.
I LOVE your gift and product suggestions.
Waffle bar?!!!! That sounds like the coolest thing ever. I’m slightly addicted to tiny waffle makers thanks to Target clearance. lol
Let’s just say I had a weird summer, super long story short- new adult driver neighbor had an oopsie (understatement) in OUR own driveway (sideways) and totaled my car and made the hub’s car unsafe to drive.( no injuries) Yes, that was EVERY bit the headache and inconvenience it sounds like TIMES 2. lol l But I now have a car with butt warmers which the car salesman didn’t believe me when I said that was my only priority. Cars have come a LONG way in 15 yrs (which is how old my reliable zero frills car was). Oh and our beloved doggo (16.5 yrs) decided it was time to cross the rainbow bridge. For the first time ever in our adult lives we are without a furry companion.
My motto is “Everything is Figuroutable” followed by “Is it 2024 yet?”. lol
I love your Friday thoughts! I just had three precancerous spots burned off yesterday and will go back in three months to check on a few others. My dermatologist suggested I start taking 500 mg of vitamin B3 twice a day. I’m probably late to the game, but I’ve had so many spots removed (and mohs surgery) and this is the first I’ve heard of the B3/skin cancer connection.
Can’t wait to hear about your remodel! We are in the beginning stages of our own kitchen gut, and I would love tips on packing up the kitchen and preparing for the down time.
Best wishes Mel.on all your life happenings! Beautiful kitchen plans! I’m a mom to a 19 year old son, currently in college and work co-op, and a daughter who graduated from college in May, moved to Montana to work with the Forest Service. Parenting is fun! I wish you all the best!
So fun to read about your successful kiddos, Cheryl! That speaks to a great mama and great kids!
God Bless You, Mel! Our prayer for you is that you are Healed! Healthy! And, Whole! You may like to try Oil Of Mink for scars. The oil penetrates down 14 layers of skin and is awesome! I don’t sell it, I have used it and tell others about it. My mother had skin cancer on her cheek and it left a big scar. I got her started on it and the scar healed beautifully. It is also great for burns. When ever I burn myself while baking or with a curling iron, I just put a bit of oil on the burn spot within about 15 seconds of it happening. Within a few minutes the burn pain is totally gone and there is no scar or mark. If I don’t use it, I see a burn mark on my skin. Google pure mink oil Online. I do buy mine from Peoplesway.com. Thank you for all of your hard work on your website. We love your recipes and hearing about your darling family!
Thank you for the recommendation, Pamela!!
So glad your Moh’s went well. My husband had a very bad experience with the removal of a basal cell. He is on blood thinners and developed a huge hemotoma after the surgery, split the stitches, developed an infection etc. Long story short, it took eight months for the face to heal. It was a terrible experience. Love your recipes and your stories and look forward to reading them.
I am so sorry about your husband’s experience, Maureen. So sorry! It sounds absolutely terrible. I hope he’s well on the mend now and that is becoming a distant memory. Thank you for being here! Always love seeing your comments pop up.
I’m excited for your gift guides, they are always a hit and an excellent resource. We homeschool and basically do a 4 day week as well. My kids are confused when people say that the weekend is Sat/Sun! I love the extra day to catch up on all the things. My kids are assigned several 5 day assignments that they will often double up on so that Friday is open for them as well. No tips. Also, I always check your website first when menu planning, thanks for being so real, relatable and for providing so many awesome recipes.
I love hearing about your family/homeschool schedule, Leigh! So interesting! Thanks for sharing that. I need a boost in making the four day week work for us. Thanks for checking in!
My youngest (of 3) is a senior in high school this year and when they graduate we will move closer to the ocean (that’s been a dream since my husband retired a few years ago). I feel my mothering recently has gotten super relaxed in preparation for these big life changes. I really enjoyed the teen years (I know, I’m weird) but I’m learning to enjoy the adult children years too. I’m excited for my next chapter of being an empty nester after over 30 years of being a mom!
What a fun and magical phase of life, Diane. I’m so excited that you and your husband are following your dream of moving closer to the ocean. Love that so much. And that’s not weird to enjoy the teen years! Remarkable, actually! There’s so much I love about it…and so much I don’t. Haha. Good luck in this next chapter!
Love the gift guides, especially when you include games 😉 And we don’t quite have 4 day school weeks here in northern Wyoming, but every Friday is out at 12. It does make it a weird half work/half play day. My kids absolutely love it, though.
Ok, update from me? Not that you know me, even though I feel like I must know you!! I just came back from my first overseas adventure! And it was none other than a trip to Switzerland with my mom, sisters, and aunt. I know you’ve talked before about wanting to go, and I beg you to make plans for it to happen for real!! We planned it for the past year and I got my passport for the first time to get to go. It was as magical as I hoped it would be. We visited family history sites (I have Swiss pioneers), ate the best food, saw the prettiest places, and even visited sites featured in Crash Landing on You. I would gladly take another trip there if you felt like you wanted a tour guide LOL!!!
Oh, don’t you worry, THERE WILL BE GAMES. Haha.
I DO love the update, Whitney! Yay! Thanks for including it. I honestly really, really love knowing about everyone’s lives. Makes me feel like a normal person instead of someone who rarely leaves her house, haha. Switzerland with your mom and sisters!! Oh my gosh, what a dream come true. I may be emailing you off the record to ask for your recommendations. That is a dream trip I am really hoping to make happen in the next couple of years (you know, after we pay off the remodel). 🙂
Not that you want to see a video of a bunch of strangers (you are so kind to make us feel all like friends here on the internet), but I made a short one of our trip: https://youtu.be/yMIZ3L20shg?feature=shared 😉
And can’t wait to see updates of your kitchen once it’s finished!! It’s going to be so beautiful!
Oh, I will TOTALLY watch!
Ok, that was magical – even just seeing the pictures. I can’t imagine actually visiting. The scenery is absolutely unreal – and the Crash Landing bridge?? They even have a sign for it. Haha. So cute! Thanks for sharing that – makes me want to go even more!
Oh that makes me so happy! Thank you for taking the time, really!! I made your fondue recipe last week so I could recreate my trip a little bit for my kids. It was such a huge hit!!! They kept saying things like “Switzerland must be the greatest country if they have this food AND such good chocolate!” Haha! Totally 😉
So we just moved to Boise, Idaho from St. Louis! And are in the middle of a few home projects and I really appreciate the name of a great general contractor! I’ve read your blog…I think about since it began and live and appreciate your food and tidbits about life. We have 7 sons and 2 daughters (but 1 living) and so I’ve always especially enjoyed reading about your family. Thank you!!
Welcome to the Boise area, Lynelle! Yay! If you get in touch with Eric, I hope you have a great experience. He has been phenomenal to work with for us. Thanks for still being here after all these years!!
I can sympathize on the kitchen upheaval. Our garbage disposal broke recently and we were without a working sink for 5 days, thanks to a pokey warranty company and a weekend. I’d lose my mind in six weeks! But going by your other renovations, it’ll be totally worth it.
Ugh, Betsy – those unexpected home fix hiccups are the worst!
So glad the surgery went well. I hope you love your remodeled kitchen! I try to connect with each of my kids everyday too, and my 15 year-old son is the hardest. He’s a great kid. I’ll keep trying!
I’ll keep trying, too, Lucy! Thanks for being here.
Your kitchen is going to be beautiful! I’ve been wanting to do ours for a long time but it just never seems to happen. It’s Canadian Thanksgiving on Monday and pretty much everything I’m making is from your website. You are amazing!
I have a lot to be thankful for this year. My youngest son who was diagnosed with AML back in 2022 is now over a year out from his stem cell transplant and has started his first semester of engineering at university. His one year post transplant biopsy came back showing no signs of leukemia and he tested negative for all the genetic mutations (one of them was at 39% when he was diagnosed and is now at zero). This doesn’t mean that the cancer won’t return but it is the best possible outcome at this point in time so I will take it! So I am truly thankful that he is still here and so thankful his one and only brother was a perfect stem cell match for him. We had a terrible time with his older brother when he was in his mid to late teens but if it’s any comfort to you, he has grown into a wonderful young man! I try not to think about some of those teen years ha ha!
Kimberly – thank you for sharing about your son. Hearing that gives me instant perspective about life and love and relationships and gratitude. And thanks for the boost about kids/teens. It really helps to hear that! I really do repeat “where we’re at now is not forever” all the time because I want to give all of us (including me) the chance to change, develop, and mature. But oof, it’s rough. Anyway, so, so glad your son is doing well after his AML diagnosis. (And happy Thanksgiving!)
Always lovely to hear you check in. Like you, I’ve had 2 rounds of Moh’s (actually, one was “Slow Moh’s” for carcinoma which was pretty awful. You have to wait 24 hours between each surgery to check the margins, so there are lots of unknowns and repeated angst). I recently had a concern on my forehead that was biopsied and shown to be basal cell as well and will have the surgery next week. I’m honestly grateful to have access to healthcare and a car to get to my appointment. I’m not looking forward to going to work with a big ol’ bandage, but I know it will be short-lived (and won’t be the giant face bandage I wore for a week with the slow Mohs. I wish I could have stayed home for that!).
Oh my goodness, Susan, I’ve never heard of the slow MOHS surgery. That sounds so stressful. I hope this next MOHS surgery is minor compared to what you went through before! Lots of love your way.
Your gift guides give me life!! I shop from them every year and I just love the ideas! Also, I made an appointment with the derm for a body scan this month because of you—so thank you for the extra push.
So happy you love the gift guides!! And good luck with that skin check!
Cancer Recurrence, Kids Stuff pulling on my Mama Heartsrings & figuring out home improvements are all part of my world. You are still my ‘go to’ every single week. Pls, always leave a weekly meal plan (at the bottom of your website.) I love going there to pick out what to make each week for meals- I feel such a kinship w you & the community here.
I feel the same kinship and community, Lauren. Truly. So appreciate you being here. Hang in there with all you have on your mind and heart. This phase of life (the last couple years, especially) has challenged me in ways I never would have asked for. And yes, that menu is staying (my website is getting a fun revamp, but that won’t go anywhere!)
I hope your big announcement is that you are bringing back your hoodie/apron shop. Also, I’m super jealous of your kitchen remodel; mine needs work in the worst way. Also, your gift guides are THE BEST. Can’t wait!
Thanks, Lynne! Excited for Monday!
my goodness… how do working parents handle 4 day school weeks for younger kids who aren’t able to be home alone? (or even older kids who you don’t really WANT to be along 8+ hours a day!!!!!) That sounds like absolute insanity to me.
Also- I’m sorry to hear about your recent surgery. But holy cow , YOU HEAL SO WELL!!!! I scar at the tiniest little nick, so there’s zero way my face and skin would heal as absolutely beautiful as yours did. I remember when you first posted about the surgery on your nose and I was like “oh my gosh, if that was me, I’d be disfigured for life.” Your surgeon did a wonderful job and your skin did an even more amazing job healing!
I totally agree, Jen! It’s been really hard for parents who work outside of the home (and even for parents who work from home – although the challenges are different). I guess it’s much easier to recruit teachers to a school district with four day school weeks (but it’s also had an impact on the janitorial and cafeteria staffs as they are now shorted one day a week).
Thanks for your kindness about my scar(s), Jen. My surgeons have done a great job – I still feel some insecurities about my nose area, especially, but all things considered, it’s healed so well.
Oh please please please let this announcement be a cookbook
Double ovens are life changing! I’m curious how you’ll like induction and changing over to induction pans and all that.
Eeeek!!
I’m curious how I’ll like induction, too. All my pots and pans are compliant (except for one nonstick skillet) so hopefully it’ll be relatively seamless?
Love the waffle bar! My son wants to have waffles for his early morning seminary class and I’ve been thinking about how to accomplish it for 18. If you can do it for several hundred, I can do this! Great ideas for syrups and toppings!
What a fun idea for seminary! Good luck!
I’m so glad your MOHS surgery went well! I had MOHS this summer just below my collarbone and ended up with 12 stitches. My only complaint is that it cut into my pickleball playing since I had to take a week off to let it heal .
We have a 4 day school week and I absolutely LOVE it. It gives my kids time to either catch up or get ahead on homework which is especially helpful for my senior who it taking a full load of dual credit classes. I love that it feels like we have two Saturdays in a row and it gives us more family time. I wouldn’t be saying this if my kids were little though. Back then I cherished the 5 day school week because little kids were so so hard for me!
I’m looking forward to your gift guides again this year. Yours are always the most helpful and realistic. I love them.
Ouch, Monica!! I hope you are healing well! And I think I need to readjust my attitude about 4 day school weeks. I’m glad you love that schedule!
This year we are taking our family of 7 on a cruise over New Year’s. First family cruise. I always said I’d never take my children on a cruise ship. But…they’re not really children anymore. The youngest will be 16. And it felt right. So Christmas presents are going to be low key, because the cruise is most of Christmas. But I still want to give the kids something. Do you have any ideas?
I’ve wondered about doing the same thing, Catherine! A trip instead of more “stuff” – when I brought it up to my kids, I realized they are all way too much like me (homebodies to the core!). A few gift ideas that come to mind in addition to the trip are: gift box subscription for 3/6/12 months (so many ideas online, my kids have loved those), a piece of clothing (pants, sweatshirt, shoes) they can bring on the trip or wear after, a family game (I have a few ideas I’ll share in the gift guide!). If I think of any others, I’ll add them here
I love these posts. And your kitchen is going to be so dreamy when done. I have been following you from nearly the beginning and you are my go to when i need dinner or food ideas. My kids know if they are making pizza dough to go to your site. You make cooking fun and delicious and I want you to know that you have impacted my life in such a positive way. thanks for all he great recipes and funny stories. Im so glad your surgery went well and you’re on the mend.
Thank you, Traci! Your comment meant a lot to me. Thank you for sharing. This space is such a treasure for me because of readers like you.
Love seeing your home remodeling projects. A kitchen remodel is a dream of mine, but I am not sure I could handle the stress. Teenagers are about all I can handle at the moment so I will definitely check out your book recommendation.
To avoid any more MOHS and get rid of the precancerous spots, ask your doctor about Efudex. It pulls the skin cells to the surface and they scab slightly and slough off. It is not pretty but it is effective.
Can’t wait to see what this announcement is!!!!
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I also often feel like teenagers are about all I can handle, too. They are amazing! And challenging! And I’ll definitely ask my doctor about that. Thank you!
I can’t tell you how relieved I am when I read of your amazing skin cancer recoveries. My grandfather had skin cancer, starting on his face, as a young adult many, many decades ago, long before the miracles surgeons and medicine can now perform. His disfigurement was awful. All my family has our skin checked routinely and any suspicious areas are whisked away. I hope your ongoing story inspires others to have routine dermatological exams.
Thank you so much, Margie. I’m so sorry for what your grandfather went through. I am also a stickler for regular skin checks. So important!
So… Fridays off. So many thoughts, most of them are grumbly. 4 days for me to do my mom jobs, 2 days of being “on” and nagging kids to be productive. (Sundays I leave them alone.) it’s not my favorite school schedule, but early release Fridays are just fine by me. I appreciate that they need a break after 4 long school days, but why?? Why do we push so hard for 4 days and then get off Friday? I don’t get it.
And I’m always up for early gift guides!! I love to be done with a lot of shopping by thanksgiving. It’s never ALL done. But it’s waaay easier on the budget to start early.
I am thrilled for you and your kitchen!! Just so happy for you. 6 weeks is long, but totally worth it!
Also, one on one time with each kid is harder to do than I think!! But I believe in it. And I keep trying.
You are putting out so much good in the world! Like the cutest sweatshirts?! I definitely needed that suggestion! Thank you for all you do!
My grumbly thoughts echo your grumbly thoughts, Rachael. 🙂 Appreciate you (and glad I know you in real life!). Also, can we just agree that one can never have too many sweatshirts and joggers?
I love your letter, and of course, your recipes Michelle. Your updates to home look spectacular and I hope all goes according to plan. It looks to me like those gel sheets work quite well. Have a blessed day and week all of you!!
Melinda Marashi
PS I love your gift suggestions
Thank you so much, Melinda!
I love your gift ideas – especially for husbands, wives (us!:)) and the adult gift ideas! My husband buys me things from your kitchen “favorite things” – I hope you update us on any “must-have” new ideas for the kitchen!
I love knowing that, Laurie! I’ll definitely be providing some new favorite things this year!
Thanks for sharing Mel, always feel like we are part of your family!!!
That is the highest compliment, Katherine! Thank you so much. I feel the same way.
Are you a Governerd??? The last several books you’ve mentioned have been on Sharon’s book club?
Mel is a Governerd. At least I found Sharon through Mel’s recommendation several years ago. So I am forever grateful to Mel for saving me in the kitchen and introducing me to Sharon.
Ah, thanks, Jennifer! I think Sharon is a gift to Instagram.
Sharon is a gift, and so are you! (And not just for your fabulous recipes!)
Hey Toni! Yes, I am a faithful Governerd. Sharon is one of the few people I follow on Instagram that I check in regularly with (wish I knew her in real life!).
Love love love!! You and she ate my bright spots on Instagram
Love love love!! You and she are my bright spots on Instagram
What kind of silicone gel sheets did they recommend? Husband just had stitches removed from center of his forehead from an accident, and it needs some healing to help the scar.
Hi Lynn! My doctor recommended these ones (I just grabbed them from Amazon – they’re reuseable). I’m going to start using them on my old scar on my nose, too.
Thanks for the fun peek into your life! I’m also three weeks in to a kitchen remodel (getting a double oven too!) and heating up Costco food- glad we are in this together. I love your recipes and kitchen inspiration.
Oh my goodness, Erin! How fun (and chaotic!) that we’re literally on the same timeline of kitchen remodel together. When will yours be done (at least when are they saying it will be done, haha)? Hang in there!!
I’m excited for your gift guides! And new recipes!
Thanks, Laura!
You are going to LOVE your induction cooktop. I miss mine from my previous home- and out dream home we are building- not gonna have one cuz the kitchen is too fancy and they don’t make them big enough (at least with the appliances we are using)
Thanks for the boost of confidence about the induction range, Leis. I’ve been wondering if I made the right choice, but all of my pots and pans are compliant and it felt like the right time!

I highly recommend investigating!
Exactly what the name implies, natural remedies for improved health & maintenance. Search ailments or remedy/supplement.
I like to tell people that I only have one oven but my husband has two big green egg smokers! It doesn’t seem fair, but when we do big dinners he’ll usually smoke the meat outside and I handle the sides.
How is the family of your friend that passed away? I think about them every so often. My best friend lost her husband just before that, leaving 5 kids from preschool to high school. They’re doing great but it tugs at my heart, thinking of them growing up without their Dad.
4 day weeks sound like a drag! Maybe if I had an extra day with my kids, though, I’d be better at doing fun outings with them.
Thanks for your continued posts and yummy recipes, Mel!
Hi Melissa! You are so sweet to inquire about Holli’s family. They are doing quite well despite the tragic circumstances. They moved several states away from me, so sadly, I don’t get to see the kids very often, but I think they are trudging through the highs and lows. It’s unimaginable to me. I’m so sorry for the loss your best friend has faced. Tugs at my heart, too. So much! (Um, and just so you know, I’m terrible at doing fun outings with my kids – mental note: WORK ON THAT, MEL)
Thanks for the recommendation, Ann!
I’m glad your dr got all the cancer out! If your remodel guy is actually finished in 3 weeks he is worth is weight in gold! Love your gift guides….the pop darts look so fun and the laser measure….I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it. I have been hoping for an update since your last Friday thoughts because you mentioned a big project and I have been excited to hear what it is…I’ll definitely be coming back on Monday! We have done two huge remodels on different homes and it can be rough. Thanks for all the hard work you do. I know I can always trust your recipes!!
Thanks, Jill! The kitchen remodel is pushing the limits of how “remodel hardy” I am, but we’re excited. Congrats on living through two huge remodels!! Thanks for being here!
Love, love your gift guides & look forward to them every year! We have 4 kids (16 – 8) & have made quite a few purchases based as your recommendations.
Any favorite k-dramas lately?
Hey Jessica! I finished King the Land and really liked that one (and we finished the first season of Attorney Woo as well – watched that one with Cam and Brian). I just started Vincenzo (the first episode is a bit violent) but don’t know what I think about it yet. I loved Hometown Cha Cha Cha, Romance is a Bonus Book (slow but sweet), Crash Course in Romance, and of course Crash Landing. Some others that have been highly recommended by other readers (haven’t watched them yet) are: Descendants of the Sun, Secretary Kim, Alchemy of Souls, She Would Never Know, Our Beloved Summer.
Your gift guide should just be joggers 😉 a whole list of joggers 🙂 🙂
And….it may be just that. Hahaha. 🙂
I’m at the end stage of a total kitchen remodel. It was a challenge for our family of six and I felt so ungrounded not having a kitchen to be busy in. But the end result has been worth it!
So exciting, Ellen! It’s been a challenge for us, too (and we’re only halfway through) but the end result is keeping me from totally losing my cool!
