Friday Thoughts: Tap, Tap, Is This Thing On?
It’s been forever since the last Friday Thoughts post (I know, I always say that!), so I am particularly excited for today. I love hearing from you in the comments every time one of these posts goes up.
Below are some life updates, random thoughts, and some things I’m loving lately.
As always: TELL ME WHAT IS NEW IN YOUR LIFE! I love to hear it. All of it.
A Few Little Updates to Start
The weather is finally cooling down, which means one thing: it’s finally hoodie season! Hoodies and sweatshirts and joggers. My love language. Have you seen these adorable pocketed sweatshirts? Gah. So flipping cute. I have the “spread kindness” one, and it makes me want to kiss the person who invented pockets in sweatshirts.
I recently helped two of my friends with food for a wedding reception. The bride and groom wanted a dessert waffle bar at the reception. It was so fun…and so yummy! The week before, I mixed up the dry ingredients for a 20X batch of the dry ingredients for these best-ever waffles (goal was to feed 350-400 people, and it was about spot on!).
The night of, we mixed the wet ingredients with the dry for the waffles and had a couple waffle iron stations set up on different circuits. We started cooking the waffle about 45 minutes before the reception started and kept the waffles warm and semi-crisp set on cooling racks in a warm oven. We separated the larger circle waffles into quarters, and we also used an adorable heart-shaped waffle maker {aff. link} and a small circle waffle maker {aff. link}.
Toppings consisted of: diced fresh peaches, sliced strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, nutella (key is to warm it up a bit for easier serving), cookie butter, mini chocolate chips, toffee bits, spray-can whipped cream, buttermilk syrup (a 10X batch was plenty!), triple berry syrup (Kodiak brand) and a divine huckleberry syrup the groom’s mom made.
These cute Kraft paper food trays {aff. link} were used for serving, and we served ice water and orange juice with fresh oranges sliced on top for the beverages. The waffle bar was a hit!
We have a four day school week, and I have big feelings about that. Our Fridays are generally spent with morning sports practices, finishing homework, helping clean the house (kids take turns cleaning their bathroom, vacuuming and dusting), and completing various outside farm/yard chores, while I try to convince everyone that it is a normal week day for the majority of the world and not a party-it-up extra weekend day. Do any of you have four day school weeks? What are your thoughts?
If you’re looking for a good book, I recently listened to Killers of the Flower Moon about the Osage murders and birth of the FBI and WOW. A must-read in my opinion. Eye opening and so, so interesting (and shocking).
If I’m being honest, motherhood has rocked my world the last little while. It’s not necessarily a bad thing…but it’s causing me to stretch and grow as I learn a lot about myself and my kids. My latest goal has been to connect with each of my kids every day, one-on-one, even if it is just for a few minutes. Doing so has helped me be more intentional about putting down my phone and making eye contact and conversation with my teenage boys (Cam is always up for a good chat, haha). I’m also trying to give more hugs and less lectures to everyone.
Parenting is hard! If you’re feeling in the muddy thick of things (and second guessing everything), just know you aren’t alone. I repeat the following phrases to myself daily: “Where we are now is not forever” and “Meet them where they’re at” and “Eat more chocolate.”
>>>I just finished this book {aff. link} and it has been a game changer for me in rethinking how I react to and parent my teenagers.<<<
Skin Cancer Update
A few months ago, I went in to get a small spot checked on my upper lip. The dermatologist performed a quick biopsy and the results came back as basal cell carcinoma.
It was not the news I wanted, dang it, especially given my past experience with basal cell and MOHS surgery.
I had MOHS surgery on the pesky spot almost two weeks ago, and it went so much better than my anxiety led me to believe it would! The MOHS surgeon got all the cancer in one pass, and I ended up with eight stitches. Pretty much best case scenario, in my book.
The stitches were removed earlier this week, and I already can’t believe how well it is healing! Right now I’m covering it with Aquaphor and staying out of the sun. I’m also supposed to be careful of how wide my mouth opens when I eat, talk, and laugh – I’ll give you one guess how well that is going.
The dermatologist/surgeon who operated told me silicone gel sheets + light massaging of the scar site (to break up scar tissue) are the best recommendations for healing, so I’ll start doing both of those next week.
Onward and upward! I feel very grateful that it wasn’t nearly as bad as my first MOHS surgery!
Gift Guides
Is it too early to talk holiday gift guides? When do you do your holiday shopping?
Some years, I have it all done by October 1. Other years (ahem, this year), it’s looking more like third week of December.
I’m hoping to get my holiday gift guides up soon this year (maybe even next week in time for Prime Day) – but if not, they’ll be up by the end of October!
Any favorite things you are currently loving? Share them below in the comments!
I’ll give you a sneak peek of a few of my latest favorites that will definitely be on the gift guides.
{Affiliate links included below.}
Popdarts: such a fun, interactive game, especially with teens. Love this one!
Laser Measure: the little tool you never knew you needed. This thing is amazing – how have I lived so long without it?
Bliss Body Butter: I’ve given this lotion as gifts to so many people this year (and I use it myself). It is glorious. Thick and creamy without being greasy. The grapefruit “flavor” is my fave.
Small Sling Bag: I bought this a few months ago and have completely ditched all my other purses. I carry it everywhere, and although small, it can fit my phone, wallet, keys and a few other necessaries. It’s super cute!
ATM-Style Piggy Bank: This little money bank is not only adorable (comes in lots of colors), but it lets the kiddo set an electronic password (and it really works!). For a slightly more intense version, this ATM piggy bank from Lakeshore Learning is super fun. My sister’s kids have this one and love it!
Kitchen Remodel
Life isn’t crazy enough, so I decided last month that it would be a good idea to remodel our kitchen. 🤪
We moved to Idaho from Minnesota in 2014, and over the last nine years, we’ve remodeled several areas of our home in order to gain a bit more functional space and update a few things.
{If you are on Instagram, you’ll recognize some of these updates!}
Exhibit A. We busted into our garage to expand the pantry.
Exhibit B. We took out the wall between the living room and master bedroom to make a larger living room.
Exhibit C. We replaced the banister.
When it comes to the kitchen, we’ve done several small updates over the years, like cutting off the ledge on the island to level it, putting in granite countertops, refacing the cabinets.
But this time, we’re remodeling for real and knocking down a wall in order to add space to the existing kitchen. The green highlighted area is the wall we’re eliminating to make a larger kitchen.
While our kitchen up to this point has been wonderful (and far bigger than kitchens we’ve had in many of the houses we’ve lived in), and the new kitchen will likely be more kitchen than anyone really needs (haha), I am so excited to have double ovens (been waiting 25 years for those!), a few more cabinets, and additional work space.
Currently, we’ve made it through almost three weeks of the remodel. Three more weeks to go!
Right now, we have access to our fridge and a limited pantry. We’re eating very simple meals (think: cold cereal, Costco meals that can be heated up on a hot plate, lots of peanut butter sandwiches, toasted bagels, and some eating out here and there). And we’re washing our minimal dishes in the bathtub. Fun times!
The simple drawing below gives you an idea of what it will kind of look like when we’re done remodeling! And by we, I mean the awesome general contractor we hired (he’s done all of the remodels in our house over the last eight years; highly recommend him – Eric @ Remedy Residential – if you are local to the Boise, Idaho area).
Once it’s finished, I’ll share some details about the finishes we picked out. We’re keeping our fridge and dishwasher – the new appliances will be double ovens (eeek!), microwave, and cooking range (I’m going induction this time since we don’t have natural gas along our county road).
I have pretty simple tastes and live a really casual life, so the end result will hopefully be welcoming and homey.
And that’ll do it for this brief edition of Friday Thoughts! 😂 Thanks for being here, friends.
**Please promise me you’ll check back on Monday. I have a HUGE announcement! And I can’t wait for you to be part of it. 💗**
I cannot wait to hear how you feel about induction!! I have gas and love it…except my stove top is always filthy!! But if induction works for you, then I will be certain that it would work for me! A million thanks for all your hard work getting these amazing recipes…and for the “little thing” like listing how may grams of flour, and not just cups. For this sloppy cook…grams is a game changer!!! Merry Christmas!!
Mel, remodel must be in the air. We are just finishing up an addition to our home. Our daughter is buying the house and we are moving to the Grandparent addition if and when we ever get done in Salt lake. I have put in am induction cook top and don’t know much about it. Why did you decide to do it? the kids have kindly agreed to take care of us as we age, in exchange for buying the house. I love that they are raising chickens and children again in the home I love.
Are the sweatshirts true to size?
Kitchen renos are no joke! Can’t wait to see yours in person. Although I told Jaxon you are changing your kitchen, & he is not happy with you). Change is hard on that boy.
I always love your gift guides at Christmas and parenting conversations with you anytime! As hard as all the truth bombs about it are, it’s nice to know we aren’t alone in this roller coaster ride of raising this generation in this insane world & at this insane time. It’s a lot! They’re incredible kids with a lot to navigate, helping them help themselves is tough! And I think you and Brian are two of the best parents out there!! Thanks for parenting my own boy when you did. He will never forget you and Brian, your home that became his home & your great kids. Our whole family will be forever grateful.
Your MOHS surgery is so well done. You have an amazing doctor/surgeon. Mine did not look nearly that discreet and clean. You’re healing beautifully!
Love your guts Mel.
I love your gift guides especially because my 5 kids look to be about the same age as yours and you have good taste in gifting 🙂 Also, good luck on the remodel. I’m heading into a major remodel this fall also. Good tip on washing dishes in the bath tub. I’ll think of you when I begin that adventure
I just finished Killers of the Flower Moon the 2nd time! Such an amazing story! Are you by chance a governerd aka follower of SharonSaysSo?
I’m glad your surgery went better than last time!
Parenting is tough!! We have similarly aged children. It has been a challenge. But like your affirmations…I have seen some challenging things pass-ones my mind was so sure we’re going to last forever. I have to learn faith and trust in deeper ways and truly know God is in charge of it all and I just have to love them and lead with compassion while teaching them. Easier said than done!
I always enjoy your updates-and gift suggestions! Hang in there with the remodels!!
We just started a four day week this year in our Missouri district. We have every Monday off. I have four kids who range from 1st grade to sophomore and so far we absolutely love it! I am home and can be flexible so childcare isn’t a hardship for us as it might be for others. It is that extra bit of margin that we desperately needed to get in more relaxing, chores, playtime, sleep (for my teenagers!). Sunday have once again become sabbath as we don’t feel rushed on Sunday afternoons and evenings to prep for the start of the week the next day. I’m a big fan!
I’m glad your surgery went as well as it did. Your kitchen will be amazing when it is done. I bought a bigger sling bag for a trip this summer and it has turned into my every day purse. Since I sew, I want to make a nicer looking one, but this one is great.
Love your site, love your recipes, love you! Thanks for sharing it all with us ❤️
I just wanted to say that I love your Friday thoughts. They are my favorites. ❤️
Hi, Mel! I love your Friday thoughts and have been following your recipes for a really really long time! You are one of the first resources I send people when they ask where I got a recipe. It’s you or Amber’s Kitchen (from Instagram). I always refer to you like we’re friends–oh, Mel gave me that recipe. She’s the best! haha
I am in a new phase of life of parenting where my 2 oldest are young adults going to college and living at home and my youngest is a high school senior. I don’t know about parenting young adults. I regularly have to remind myself to correct less and love more. Do you think your book is a good rec for older kids too? I’m kinda passed the teen years. I’ve told many that parenting young adults has been way harder for me than the teens. But, like all phases there are some really fun things that I love about it too! It’s all about perspective, right? Emily Belle Freeman recently used the term “perspectacles” (not about parenthood, but totally applies) and it’s my new favorite word!
Love your gift guides too! I love games and have gotten several based on your rec and they were hits! Thanks!!
And your pantry! When we were building our house, the pantry was a simple corner pantry and I said no way. The garage was plenty big, so I redrew the plan and stole from the garage to make a really big walk-in pantry (that my kids called the spare room) and even added a little space to the laundry room that shared a wall so we could fit an upright freezer and even a small fridge in it. Best choice ever! A big pantry is a life-changing. I hope you love it!
Hey Sandee! Thanks for commenting! I agree with you about parenting young adults. Harder than I thought it would be for many reasons! I think the book I linked to is probably not as helpful for young adults as it is for going through the thick of the teen years? Your pantry sounds AMAZING. Wow! I agree with you, though, a bit pantry is kind of a game changer. Thanks for being here!!
Hi Mel! Your kitchen will be great! I wish I had someway to make a larger pantry!
One thing I have been loving is henne lip tint. They give just enough color but not overpowering. I got the sample pack to try all the colors and I love them all! If I had to pick a favorite I would say blissful and apricot are my 2 favorites. Check them out! https://henneorganics.com/shop/lip-tints?gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwg4SpBhAKEiwAdyLwvCxFCXhib0zrbmNOZPRE7RBjO2fFNOiB3r4cIGRrxtIQdiQUIHjkuhoCOOkQAvD_BwE
Sorry, it’s coral ..not apricot
Thanks for the recommendation, Victoria! Sounds right up my alley (not a huge lipstick wearer but I love having a bit of color).
I have something to share with you! My 19-year-old son wanted me to help him cook 5-7 servings of a meal that was healthy so he could freeze it and then come home from work and have it ready to go. He gets home late around 9:00 or 10:00. Sometimes there isn’t much dinner left for him. Anyway, he just had an idea that he wanted chicken, rice and veggies. I had asked him to choose a recipe, but he didn’t. When I asked him where my best recipes come from he said Mel’s kitchen! Everybody knows about you and all the influence you’ve had for good in my life!
Anyway, spur of the moment I adapted the chicken tzatziki recipe you gave us and we marinated his chicken breasts and then cooked them in the oven- all 10 of them! We added it to rice and veggies and he came home that night and loved the meal! Thanks for saving the day because he had very little time and patience:))
I really appreciate the book recommendation to help with being a better mom! I have been trying to be more intentional about spending individual time with each of my children! You are awesome and doing a good job! I know eating more chocolate really does help, ha ha. You also look beautiful after the mini surgery. I went through that on my nose about a year after you did. I see my dermatologist this week! Thanks for being a good example! No, I haven’t started thinking about Christmas gifts yet, but your gift guide always really helps us! Love you, bunches!!
Anne! I loved that! Thank you for sharing about your son. You are an awesome mom to help him execute that meal plan – and I love that the chicken tzatziki recipe worked out well. Your son is such a cool kid!
I am on the edge of my seat. What a teaser about Monday, you can’t do that to us! I’m impressed that you’re kitchen remodel will be done in 6 weeks. Everyone I know who has remodeled since covid seems to have to wait forever to get the job completed. I also can’t wait for your gift guide. I recently perused old guides to get gift ideas for a friend’s birthday. You’re the best!
Thanks, Beth! I’ll stop complaining about the remodel because you’re right, it IS going so fast compared to so many others. 🙂 I’m excited about Monday and the gift guides, too. So much happening! Fun and crazy.
My kids have had a 4 day week every other week since school started and I am over it. It makes it really difficult for them to adjust to a schedule when it is constantly changing.
Can’t wait to hear what your announcement is!
Oh man, that WOULD be hard! Why the back and forth? Is that how it will be all school year? Yikes.
I am 75 years old and just had MOHS surgery on my lower eyelid for basal cell carcinoma. I get the stitches out on Tuesday. I have asked about a couple of spots that didn’t have any lashes. I was told by two eye doctors that it wasn’t anything. The third did refer me to another doctor who took one look and ordered a biopsy. Even the MOHS surgeon said they are very tricky to spot. I was lucky and didn’t have to have reconstructive surgery, but it took three tries to get it all. Please everyone be persistant if you think there is something wrong.
I agree, Sheri! Be persistent! Good luck with your healing. That sounds like such a tender spot. Wishing you well!
Well, I should be sleeping, but instead I’m hanging in your every word. I love reading about your remodel. I’m stunned to see how quickly it is progressing! My sister has an induction cooking range. It’s amazing! I’m grateful for your parenting advice. My kids are a bit younger, but I’m mentally tucking away any advice I can’t implement right away because I know I’ll need it. I’m glad the waffle bar found a home…loved that on Instagram. And I’m anxiously awaiting your gift guides. Anything I have purchased from them has been a hit. Pretty much I just think you are the best! Can’t wait for Monday!
Hi Lindsey! Yes, I feel really grateful the remodel is going to quickly. And you are so sweet! Thanks for your kindness. I am SO excited about the gift guides this year. I hope they are helpful! And the announcement on Monday. Eeek! So many fun things coming up!
I have a testimony of my Conduction Range!!! I love it, you are going to love the boost setting, boils a big pot of water so quickly. The Conduction cooktop is so easy to clean. I love mine.
That makes me super excited to use mine when it gets installed, Cindy! Yay! (The testimony part of your comment cracked me up)
Always so nice to get an update! Hang in there mama. Teenagers are the best. 🙂 I enjoy my remodeled kitchen everyday even though it was the hardest to endure and I have pantry envy. 😉 Enjoy!
Thanks, Mel!
LOVE your gift guides! Especially the game one! I always use them for my Christmas shopping! Thank you for posting them! Excited for your kitchen!!
I’m SO excited about the game gift guide this year, Jen. It’s going to be so good (and so fun!)
I’ve had basal cell carcinoma twice too. First time at 34 yrs old. Are you taking niacinamide? Medical study was published that it reduces recurring non melanoma by 25% (feel free to do your own research on the study). And I agree Mohs can be traumatic! I have a 1 inch bald spot on the top of my head!
Thanks for the tip on that, Liz! I’ll look it up!
1- We have a four day school week, and I *LOVE* it. We get Mondays off, which I prefer over Fridays. We take Saturday totally off, then Sunday and church and all that, and then Sunday night we don’t even need to think about school or lunches, we just go into Monday. Mondays are our big deep cleaning days, piano lessons, and any appointments I can squeeze in that day instead of the kids missing school. It also builds into it all those Monday holidays that come around about once a month. It’s the greatest, I love it.
2- We built a house last year, and I have a much larger kitchen than typical, and my pantry is behind my kitchen, is 18 feet long, has countertop all along one side, with a farm sink, dishwasher, and two freezers. While that much kitchen to clean and take care of isn’t for everyone, I LOVE it. The storage. The counter top space. All my messy stuff hidden on the countertop in the pantry. A second dishwasher. It’s the greatest. You will love a big kitchen.
Interesting to think about having Mondays off and not Fridays! I think I’d actually prefer it BECAUSE there are so many Monday holidays. I feel like 50% of the time my kids are actually only going three days a week because Monday is a holiday and they already have Fridays off. Hmmm. Perhaps I should propose that to the school board? Haha. Also, your kitchen sounds amazing. AMAZING! A sink and dishwasher and two freezers just in the pantry? Can I move in??
Hi Mel..I have a question about your lip. What exactly did that spot feel like? I’ve had a spot on the left side of my top lip that always feels dry. not sensitive, just dry and tight feeling and no matter how much I moisturize it, it stays dry. Might be a little pinkish , but not really noticeable unless I get really close to the mirror (or maybe my eyes are not so good..lol..I’ve had many little sun thingies burned off my nose over the years, but they always felt tender. I’m just curious…
Hi Colleen – good question! It honestly didn’t feel like much – no pain or anything. I just knew it needed checked because it was a tiny little scab in that area that kept bleeding. Not profusely – it would just scab over and then bleed a bit and repeat. It never healed. My first basal cell spot was like that as well and that’s why I knew I needed to get in. But from what I’ve learned different types of skin cancers and skin issues can present differently. So if you are at all concerned, I’d definitely say go in and get it checked. It might be nothing (just normal, aging skin) but you can find out either way!
I had a spot that I would describe just the same as you Colleen. The derm said it was a pre cancer spot. She just froze it off right there in the office and it healed right up. Good luck!
Oh, Mel. I wish you lived close by. We would go to lunch and talk about this whole parenting of teenagers thing. I had no idea how scary it would be and how helpless I would feel. It’s so weird. Sorry for just assuming you and I would be lunch buddies. But, yeah, we would be. For sure.
I can’t believe all the home renovations you’ve done. Our first home was a fixer-upper, and each summer my husband (who was a school teacher) would pick a room and renovate it. Living in a construction site is NO JOKE– so you have my sympathy. Now he’s an administrator, so he doesn’t have time for renovations and (ironically, since he makes more money!) I don’t feel like we have the money for them, either. Maybe after all our kids are done with college…? Best of luck with yours– I’m equal parts jealous of the beautiful changes you’ve made and glad I don’t have to deal with all the mess! (I am inspired by your handrail– that change is amazing! That might be one thing we could actually afford…)
I’m so glad your MOHS surgery went well. I don’t think I’m particularly pretty or vain about my looks, but watching you go through your first surgery really made me realize how much I would struggle if I had to do the same thing. I have been so happy for you that you’ve healed so beautifully (in every sense of that word!) and wish you a speedy recovery this time, too! Keep slathering on that sunscreen– I’m trying to learn from you and be more diligent about that, too!
I love your blog!!!
Totally lunch buddies, Alanna! Honestly, parenting can feel so lonely sometimes, you know? Like, out of respect to my kids, I’m not going to take to the internet (or even a group of friends) to talk about the personal issues my kids are facing. But man, sometimes just one, good listening ear helps to unload what’s on my mind and heart with my precious, struggling kids. And it’s nice to not feel so alone in all this. And I hear you on the remodeling. First of all, you and your husband have my mad respect for tackling it on your own. I am not that hardy. Haha. I think this will be our last big one. We’re out of space (and money!). Last thing – I totally hear what you’re saying about looks. I’ve NEVER considered myself a vain person and honestly, I know I’m just kind of an average gal (and I’m totally ok with that), but these surgeries have made me realize that, actually, yes, I DO care what my face looks like. I guess I have more vanity than I thought! I am grateful everything is healing pretty well. Ok, enough rambling. Thanks for chiming in!
I’m SO excited for you about your kitchen remodel. We went with induction when we remodeled a few years ago and it is life-changing. I feel like a magician every time I cook! Plus it so easy to clean. Good luck making it through the next few weeks. Living without a kitchen is HARD!
Ok, that gives me so much hope that I made the right decision with induction. Thanks for weighing in on that. And anything to make me look like a rock star to my kids helps. Haha. I’ve already told them the wonders of induction – they can’t wait to see it in action!
