Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Cake
This pumpkin cinnamon swirl cake is incredible! The one-bowl pumpkin batter is swirled with a sweet cinnamon mixture and then after baking, it is topped with a delicious cream cheese glaze.
The cake is ultra-fluffy (like, you won’t believe how soft it is!) and the pumpkin-cinnamon flavors are fantastic. You’re going to love this one!

Why You’ll Love This Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Cake
- You may not believe that a legitimately delicious and fluffy cake can be made by throwing all the cake batter ingredients into one bowl together AT THE SAME TIME. But believe me, it works. This cake recipe proves it – and that’s what I modeled this pumpkin recipe after.
- Those little ribbons of cinnamon swirled into the pumpkin cake give regular ol’ pumpkin cake a bit of pizazz and personality.
- The simple cream cheese glaze is sweet and tangy and the perfect finish for the warmly spiced pumpkin cake. Pour the glaze over the cake while still warm so that it soaks into the crackly cinnamon crevices.
- The cake ingredients and pantry spices are readily available – in fact, I’m guessing you have most of them hanging around already!
- The 9X13-inch pan of cake means there is plenty to share. The cake can also easily be halved and baked in an 8-inch square or round pan.

How to Assemble and Swirl the Cake
To prepare to assemble the cake, mix the cake batter ingredients in one bowl and the cinnamon-sugar mixture in a smaller bowl.
To assemble the pumpkin cinnamon swirl cake:
- Spread half the cake batter in the prepared pan.
- Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the cake batter.
- Dollop the remaining cake batter over the top and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over the top.
- For the swirl, use a butter knife to make a large “W” shape across the batter and then make a 2 or 3 long slashes the length of the pan.
Important note: Take care not to overwork or slash the batter too many times or that delightful swirl will be muddled. A few swipes through the batter and you are good to go.

Additional Notes
- This cake is delicious served warm (try it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) or at room temperature.
- You could definitely get away with serving this as a breakfast coffee cake type situation.
- The cake stays moist and delicious for days! Cover it well and store in the refrigerator. I like to warm leftovers for just a few seconds in the microwave before serving.
If you make one pumpkin cake this fall, I hope it’s this one. The cinnamon swirl and cream cheese glaze are absolute perfection with the soft, fluffy pumpkin-spiced cake.
Plus, that too-easy one-bowl batter means there’s very little effort standing between you and a piece (or three) of really good cake. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Cinnamon Swirl Cake
Ingredients
Cake:
- 2 cups (284 g) all-purpose flour
- 15-ounce can (435 g) pumpkin puree
- 1 ½ cups (318 g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (120 g) sour cream, room temperature
- ½ cup (113 g) salted butter, melted
- 3 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
Cinnamon Swirl:
- ¼ cup (53 g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (53 g) lightly packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Cream Cheese Glaze:
- 4 ounces (113 g) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups (228 g) powdered sugar
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (preheat to 325 degrees F for a glass pan). Lightly grease 9X13-inch pan with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- For the cake, in a large bowl, combine all the cake batter ingredients and mix well. The batter will incorporate more smoothly with room temperature ingredients. A few small lumps are ok.
- For the cinnamon swirl, stir together the granulated sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon until well-combined.
- To assemble, spread half the cake batter in the prepared pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the cake batter.
- Dollop the remaining cake batter over the top and spread evenly. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over the top.
- Use a butter knife to make a large “W” shape across the batter and then make a 2 or 3 long slashes the length of the pan. Don't over-slash the batter or the swirl will be muddled as it bakes.
- Bake the cake for 30 to 35 minutes until the top springs back lightly to the touch and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Add time as needed (it's likely, you'll need to add a few minutes if baking at 325 degrees F in a glass pan).
- For the glaze, add the cream cheese and butter to a medium bowl and mix with an electric mixer until well-combined. Add the vanilla and mix until combined.
- Add one cup of the powdered sugar. Mix. Add the remaining powdered sugar and mix until evenly combined.
- Whisk in the milk, a tablespoon at at time, until the glaze is thick but pourable.
- Let the cake cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Drizzle the glaze evenly over the warm cake. Serve extra glaze over individual pieces, if desired.
- Serve warm or at room temperature (delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream).

So good! Easy to prep with kitchen staples, no fancy decorating steps, and perfect fall flavor. I did combine all the wet ingredients, then added dry, just because that feels right. I could probably cut down the sugar somewhere, but it’s delightful as is for a splurge. Family and coworkers raved about it!
Halved the recipe (1 egg + 2T of another) and it came out great in an 8×8 pan except it went too fast! Cake is tasty on its own but glaze is perfect addition.
My 17 year old daughter made this for my birthday. Gluten free so my husband could eat it. It was delicious. We all loved it!!
Can’t wait to try it!
Can I use pumpkin pie spice or should it be the specific spices listed?
Hi Trish, you could definitely experiment subbing in pumpkin pie spice for the slices listed! Whenever I do that, I usually also add another 1/2 teaspoon or so of cinnamon.
This sounds so good and I can’t wait to try it. If you were to halve the recipe, would you use 2 eggs or 1?
Very good!
We used 1c of sugar instead of the 1 1/2c, and that was great for the cake. Next time we’ll probably cut some of the sugar in the frosting, too. Very sweet.
But it’s so delicious to take just a nibble off when I come into the kitchen!
This cake is soo good!! I didn’t even put the glaze on yet and I love it! There’s nothing better than a delicious cake that uses one bowl. And I think it will taste perfect as my breakfast because I plan to eat it until it’s gone. It’s my cross to bear.
So light and fluffy! Rave reviews from all the family. I subbed in 2 tsp of pumpkin pie spice for all the spices and it was very lightly spiced. I would probably add 1/2-1 tsp more next time. I did not add the glaze. We had it with butter pecan ice cream. Delicious!
Oh wow!! Sounds divine with the ice cream. Thanks for the review!
This was so easy to make and so delicious! We loved it! The cream cheese icing on top was perfect! A wonderful fall (or anytime) dessert!
I’m so happy you made this and loved it! Yay!
Hi Mel,
Could this be made in a bundt cake pan?
Hi Kathie, I haven’t tried it that way, but it’s worth a try!
The texture is so light and fluffy! The flavors are perfect; my picky son just declared this his new favorite dessert!
Ok, that is awesome!! Thanks for sharing that, Julie!
This cake is delicious! It is one of the best cakes I have ever made. It was so moist and a huge hit with the family. It was so good that I took it to my daughter’s house, so I wouldn’t eat the whole cake myself!
I have also had to employ strategies similar to that in order to avoid eating more than my fair share of cake! 🙂
Really one of the best fall cakes ever! About to make it for a second time in one week! 🙂
Ok, this made my day!! So, so happy you love this one, Meg. Thanks for letting me know!
Quick question, could I sub buttermilk for the sour cream? Trying to avoid a run to the store for one ingredient, but I REALLY wanna make this!
Hi Jen, I haven’t tried that, but I think it should work just fine. The batter will be a bit thinner, but my guess is that it’ll bake up just fine!
This is very good and easy! Definitely has a coffee cake vibe with the cinnamon sugar swirl and love the texture it adds!
Thanks for the review, Taylor!
Hi Mel
Thank you for often sharing your family!!! Love hearing about the mission trips and family outings!!!
This recipe is sooo delicious!…and sooo easy as well. Everything in one bowl 🤔sounds crazy but it surely does work. My entire family has raved over this cake. Im taking it to a Bible Study fellowship next week!!! Thanks again!! Yvonne
Thank you so much for checking in and commenting, Yvonne! So glad you are here.
What did I love about this cake, you may ask? Everything.
It’s SO good and was just the right level of work for my weary soul. 🤣🫶🏻🩵 Thanks, Mel!
Haha, weary souls unite!!
Oh this is delicious!!! Thank you, thank you! I needed another thing to make with pumpkin!!!!!
Yay, Jill! Glad you loved it!
Oh my! A very simple recipe. The instructions were interesting noting to add all the cake ingredients in a bowl and combine. I mixed the dry then wet, then added wet to dry and added unsalted nuts.
Unbelieveably moist! Our neighbor asked for more!
Thank you!
I’m glad you liked this cake, Kim! I know it seems odd to add all the cake ingredients together, but it really does work. 🙂
We love your recipes!! This is delicious! I used pumpkin spice and some cinnamon. It was amazing. I left out about 50 grams of sugar. I might make it next time without the frosting. It is a bit too sweet. Thank you for this recipe!!
Thanks for the review!
Hello, sounds super delicious – I’m excited to try it. Has anyone tried doubling it in a 1/2 sheet pan?
Hi Mel! Would you be willing to list the pumpkin measurement in grams, too?
Thank you!
Just added to the recipe – it’s about 435 grams.
I’m only starting the cake and noticed there’s a discrepancy between the measurement and grams of sour cream. I’m assuming it’s 1/2 c of 120 grams. Just wanted to point it out to anyone else weighing the ingredients. I’m sure the cake will be delicious as everything Mel posts is!
Hi, Rose! Sorry about that. Yes, the weight measure is 120 grams. I’ve corrected the recipe.
Looking forward to trying this! Have you(or anyone!) had success with a gluten free measure for measure flour in this recipe or the one you’ve based it off if?
Hi Sam, I haven’t made this gluten free flour but others have made the chocolate chip version gluten free with great results. If I remember right, someone commented they used 10% less gluten-free flour (by weight) than the all-purpose flour.
Just an update, I made it with King Arthur Measure for Measure gf flour, same gram amount, and it was perfect! No one could tell it was gluten free and it was light and fluffy. Would highly suggest if anyone needs to make this accommodation.
That’s fantastic feedback, Sam. THANK YOU!
Sam – I’m planning to try it out this weekend using KAF measure for measure GF flour and will report back!
How’d KAF GF turn out?
Hey Mel!! I know this will be a beauty recipe once it’s made but I wanted to let you know that the sour cream measure says 402g for the half cup. My early morning brain took a while to compute that it couldn’t be correct. 😊
Sorry about that! I’ve corrected it to 120 grams as it should have been.
Wonderful fall flavor! Perfectly soft! Came together SUPER easy! Thank thank you Mel
Yay, Jenny! Thanks for making it so quickly and reporting back!
Mel! Thank you for what you are doing! My family and I rely on your recipes. Your voice and encouragement are a very bright spot in our daily lives. We are jumping on your website multiple times a week as we try and get dinner on the table and everyone fed. I am so sorry that the world is changing so rapidly. I feel it in my life but I know it affects you in a profound way. I for one, love that you are a real human doing this work. I value that so much.
Thank you for such a heartfelt comment, Leah. Maybe it’s just life right now, but it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your kindness, validation, and for being here. It means a lot to me!
Thoughts on making this as mini Bundt cakes
Hi Vanessa, I haven’t tried that, but I think it could work quite well. I wouldn’t over fill the pans more than 1/2 to 2/3 full and keep an eye on the baking time (maybe check after 20 minutes?).
Another winning recipe for Thanksgiving! Thanks for all you do, take care, be kind to yourself!
Thanks, Lola! Same to you.
Oooooh, we love the one bowl chocolate chip cake, so I’m sure we’ll love this version, too. Can’t wait to try it soon!
Hope you love it, Arlene!
