Amazing Cranberry Pecan Cream Cheese Dip {Sweet or Spicy}
Festive and pretty, this cranberry pecan cream cheese dip is crazy delicious! You can use a sweet fruit jam in the recipe or change it up with jalapeno jelly…either way, this is a must-make!
Ok, inquiring minds want to know: do you do the whole appetizer spread before a big holiday meal (like Thanksgiving)? Or not?
Apparently I had been living under a rock for the first several decades of my life, because it wasn’t until I was in my mid-20’s that I learned some people live in this alternate world where an enormous array of appetizers is set out an hour or so leading up to the huge meal.
I couldn’t believe it! I had never experienced this high class experience before. I’m not going to lie, there was part of me that loved every single minute (and bite), and the other part of me was like: “what is going on here? this feels wrong! why are we ruining our much anticipated Thanksgiving dinner with shrimp cocktail and french onion dip??”
And while I have a feeling this topic may inspire some strong, passionate feelings, I really do want to know if you partake in such a custom. Enlighten me, please.
Over the years, I’ve started laying out a few snacky type foods mid-morning-ish on Thanksgiving to tide the masses over until the meal is served at the arbitrary hour of 2:30 p.m. Don’t ask me why we don’t eat Thanksgiving dinner at a normal meal hour like either noon or 6 p.m. – it’s always been 2:30 p.m. and I have a feeling it will always be that way. (Anyone else start automatically belting out Tradition ala Fiddler on the Roof?)
It’s usually just one or two little appetizers (quite honestly, we’re talking cheese and crackers in most cases). Personally, I haven’t summoned the mental fortitude to make 15 appetizers when turkey and pies are already calling my name. But this year, I’m adding this cranberry pecan cream cheese dip to the small spread.
It is incredible! AND, it can and should be made ahead of time. It reminds me a little of this popular cranberry-jalapeno dip…just more jammy and less salsa-y.
I told you I wasn’t finished with fresh cranberries yet, and I wasn’t kidding. For this cranberry pecan cream cheese dip, those fresh cranberries simmer in a little sugar until they pop and get super juicy. At this point, it’s your choice to decide which path to follow.
Sweet and tart? Go ahead and stir in some apricot or peach jam. Sweet and spicy? Go straight for the jalapeno or hot pepper jelly or jam.
And while you may be anti-nuts like I am sometimes, the toasted pecans are delicious (and dare I say, essential) to the amazingness of this dip. They add just the right touch of nutty crunch without overpowering the tart sweetness.
The first time I made this, I used a homemade apricot jam lingering on my pantry shelves. It was splendid! I put the dip out during a football game and my 9-year old nephew almost ate the whole thing. But I couldn’t get the idea of a cranberry-jalapeno version out of my mind, so I made it again with jalapeno jelly.
And wow. Wow. Just wow.
If you are looking for THE holiday appetizer to make you world famous (or maybe just neighborhood famous – ok, we’ll settle for alone in your kitchen famous), this cranberry pecan cream cheese dip is the one! I have a feeling I’ll be making this all December long.

Cranberry Pecan Cream Cheese Dip {Sweet or Spicy}
Ingredients
- About 1 ½ cups fresh cranberries
- ⅓ to ½ cup (71 to 106 g) granulated sugar (see note)
- 2 tablespoons water
- ½ cup apricot jam, peach jam, or jalapeno/hot pepper jelly (for a subtly spicy version)
- ½ cup (60 g) chopped, toasted pecans (see note)
- 8 to 12 ounces (227 to 340 g) cream cheese, softened
- Crackers, for serving
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, add the cranberries, sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring often, and cook until the cranberries pop and soften a bit, about 10 minutes.
- Off the heat, stir in the jam and pecans (see note). Let the dip cool; refrigerate 8-12 hours so the flavors develop and blend (I’m sure you can serve it sooner than that, but it’ll be yummier if you can wait).
- Spread softened cream cheese in a shallow dish or plate. Top with the cranberry dip mixture. Serve with crackers.

Thank you for my favorite new recipe! Love this dip… absolutely love it! We had it last year for the first time and it is my new favorite!!! I made a double batch and it went super quick! I have left over cranberries… do you think I can make another batch (not add the pecans) and freeze till Christmas?
I haven’t tried freezing it, but I’m guessing it will work. You might need to drain off some liquid after thawing.
Well… I went and bought more cranberries and made four batches to freeze. I am now thinking of every single special occasion I will want to eat this and need to go get more cranberries!!! I will let you know how they thaw out!! Thanks for the awesome recipes!!! Looking forward to making your cheeseball! And pretzel bark!
I made the spicy version with Trader Joe’s Hot Pepper Jelly and it is delicious. Served with pita bite crackers. Great easy appetizer!
I had Pineapple Apricot Jalapeno Pepper Jelly – YUM!
Oh wow! Yummy!
Can’t wait to make this! We do Thanksgiving and Christmas “After-tizers” meaning that we save the appetizers for about 6 p.m. or so when everyone is in the sort-of hungry stage after the big meal. We usually eat the big meal about 1 p.m. so by 6 p.m., especially the kids are ready for a little something to snack on and that’s when we roll out 3-4
of the aftertizers.
Love that idea, Kenzie!
This was a big hit! I made it with a homemade pepper jelly, so it had a little kick. A make again, for sure.
Yay! Thanks, Julie!
This dip was easy to make and a huge hit at both Thanksgiving celebrations – thanks for the “keeper”!
Thanks, Christy!
Wowsers! This was so good! Everyone loved this recipe (even little kids). I doubled it and left out the pecans because I am allergic. I’ll definitely make it again (like as soon as possible). Thank you Mel!!
Thanks, Natasha! So happy everyone loved this!
I’m with you Mel. It’s a BIG NO to even nibble on even one cracker ! As you can tell, I’m very passionate about saving every tiny bit of tummy room for the best meal of the year ( even though I literally pass out after eating. Turkey )
I don’t even eat bread as it’s in the stuffing. Anyway , you asked for our opinion and this is mine
Mel! This dip was amaze!!!!! We doubled the cranberries and then made one batch spicy and one sweet! The Spicy WON the day. We used a Green Chili Jalepeno Jelly. It was so yummy! I’ll be making it for Christmas too!
Just made it, and it’s in the fridge for tomorrow. I had to leave a little bit in the pan and open the cream cheese, just to have a tiny taste tonight! It smelled too good to wait!
Hope it was a hit, Andrea!
We usually eat somewhere around 2-4. We set out veggie trays and a cheeseball and crackers and some chocolate truffles for snacking on while the meal is being prepared. I am thinking I’ll add this dip this year!
Mel – we have a nut allergy over here. Do you think it would be worth it without the pecans or should I just find a different recipe?
Yes, I think you could still have a yummy appetizer without the pecans! You’ll be missing a little crunch, but the tart/sweet cranberry sauce over the cream cheese is still stellar.
The first time we had an appetizer before dinner, our neighbor brought over a cream cheese dip made with beau monde seasoning and Ritz crackers. That was in 1947. From then on appetizers have been part of the scene. It started when everyone waited dinner until after the 49ers played and we listened at home on the radio. We still jockey our dinner time to avoid having the game on during dinner–so appetizers are definitely part of our day.
Just made this and it’s cooling–then will chill and take to a gathering tomorrow evening. Zipped the pecans into the microwave (at your suggestion!!) and they were tasty. Did add the jalapeño jelly my husband’s friend brought him from Monana on a little day trip.
All is well on Thanksgiving Eve Eve 😉
Hope you love it! So happy you went for the jalapeno jelly. YUM!
Growing up, we typically had a 1-3:00 dinner and light breakfast with some celery/carrots and olives put out to stave off hunger pains before the big meal. I don’t remember dips or anything “fancy” for apps.
As an adult, I’ve had various munchie items depending on what time the meal was planned. Still, nothing fancy or heavy, because THE MEAL 🙂
Yes! THE MEAL! That’s my main focus. 🙂
If I had a best friend that I had never met, it would be you! Thank you for all that you do for my family. You keep all seven of us fed and happy. I tell everyone about your blog. I have made so many of your recipes over and over and over again. You never let me down. I hope you have a great holiday! This recipe looks great. If it’s as good as your cranberry salsa then I am sold!
Oh my, thanks cute Tracie! You are so sweet! Thanks for making my Thanksgiving week super awesome with your comment. Happy Thanksgiving!
For those of us with cranberries but no pecans at the moment…and who may break into a cold sweat at the thought of going back to the store…any recommendations for another type of crunch to substitute? Thoughts on almonds or walnuts or sunflower seeds? The recipe sounds so tasty!
Haha, I hear you! Avoid the grocery store at all costs! I think walnuts would work or chopped almonds!
Could I use frozen cranberries? If so, do I thaw them before using?
That’s a good question – I haven’t tried it, but I think it would probably work (I wouldn’t thaw them beforehand)
I am also totally new to the idea of Thanksgiving appetizers…in my mind, the meal tastes SO much better if you’ve been waiting for it all day!
I kind of agree with this!
Mel it’s me, Kensi! The Kensi that lived in Grenada all those years ago, and would ask you substitution questions, haha I feel like we’re long time friends! We will be having this as an appetizer before our meal, it looks so good! We don’t do anything crazy usually a cheeseball and sausage balls. And maybe some fudge . We usually eat at 2. It’s the perfect time for a big meal! I still always come to your site to find the best and new recipes. Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving! Thanks for keeping up your great site!
Hey Kensi! I’m glad we aren’t the only ones that eat at smack dab in the middle of the afternoon! Happy Thanksgiving! Fun to hear from you. 🙂
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday even as a kid. Growing up my Mom would be cooking for days and on the morning of we would wake up to the smell of the turkey baking and all the other food that she was making. My grandmother would make home made noodles and set them all over the kitchen table to dry out and if we were in the kitchen it could stir up hair that might get into them so there were strict instructions to stay out of the kitchen…that meant no food until dinner! It was torture and I vowed all those years ago when ever I was older and made my own Thanksgiving dinner I would have stuff to nibble on before the big dinner. I just a few years ago started to cook Thanksgiving by myself and true to my vow we have appetizers to nibble on before we eat around 4 but I’d trade it all for having my Mom and Grandma around again and starving all day! Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! PS I’m adding your cranberry appetizer this year, sounds wonderful!
I love this, Kelly! Both the visual of your childhood Thanksgivings (homemade noodles – so awesome! But a travesty to have to stay out of the kitchen:) and how you’ve changed it up as an adult.
Our turkey time is 4:00 and with my boys and nephews we definitely need some apps around noon (we usually skip breakfast that day). We have a variety of them every year and then we all manage to eat our meal and dessert!!! I am so excited to make this dip for Christmas Eve, though. I make a delicious dried cranberry and scallion cheese ball with other yumminess in it and I think I will try this instead this year. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Oh my goodness, Teresa, that cheese ball sounds AMAZING!
I didn’t even know appetizers were a thing! Ha! Apparently I was under the rock with you. We did definitely always snack on things as they were being made, when I was a kid I loved helping with the fruit salad just so I could eat half the pomegranates as I pulled them out of the fruit, and I’m sure my mom was totally fine with not having to be the one to get the arils out ha! And my dad always opened a can of olives to go on the tables and between him and us kids they would usually be gone before dinner was served. My in laws always have a queso dip, so I guess with them we do have that as an appetizer. We have had cream cheese with jalapeño jelly on it and love that so I’m sure we are going to love this!
I like your strategy for helping with the fruit salad, Misty! Haha. Whenever we open a can of olives (for whatever reason!) they are gone before the actual meal.
Hi Mel, this looks delish. What kind of crackers do you recommend pairing with this.? We’ve usually done a late lunch as well 1:30-2ish. Gives us more time to have everything ready and then everyone just nibbles on leftovers in the evening and relaxes.
Our favorites so far have been Ritz and wheat thins, but there are some yummy artisan-type crackers at Costco right now that would be yummy, I think!
We definitely do appetizers! Nothing too crazy…usually a cheese ball of some kind and a veggie tray. But they are absolutely essential and just as looked forward to as the rest of the meal!
That’s awesome! We’ve started doing a cheeseball the last few years, and my kids would rather eat that than the actual Thanksgiving meal. They love it!
Well for the last 3 years, I’ve been bringing your Yummy Fresh Cranberry Salsa to our pre-dinner appetizer offerings. 🙂 We love that. Will have to branch out and try this one. Our pre-dinner snacks range from veggies to cheese fondue to cheese balls, non-dairy cashew-cheese cheese balls, etc. This looks yummy!
That kind of sounds really similar to our pre-feast lineup, too, Alicia! Simple but snacky and yummy. My kids move heaven and earth for a good cheese ball.
I always grew up where thanksgiving was just a normal thanksgiving dinner. Then I married my husband and experienced thanksgiving with his family. We arrive at his uncle’s to cheese and crackers, clam dip, cocktails, etc. Then it is the antipasta. And then lasagna. Then a full thanksgiving dinner and then dessert. Your mantra quickly becomes, just a small amount please! 🙂 (my family is now completely on board with the antipasta tradition. I love that they have adopted it.)
Isn’t it funny/awesome/crazy how families can celebrate so differently? That is some kind of lineup before Thanskgiving (lasagna??).
