60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
You are only a minute or so away from a decadent, delicious, chocolate chip mug cookie made start-to-finish in a mug and “baked” in the microwave!
Whether or not you are on a no sweets, healthy eating, juice detox, cabbage only (don’t do it) diet this month, I’m a firm believer that it is ok to allow yourself a bit of indulgence every now and then.
Says the girl who probably indulged a bit too much in December.
Instead of making a whole batch of cookies and having them stare you in the face for three days straight while you try to figure out every which way to avoid the temptation, the next time you need a little sweetsie something, consider this 60-second chocolate chip mug cookie.
Made in a mug.
Cooked in the microwave.
Warm and melty, this mug cookie is luxurious with a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt. Like any mug cake/cookie, it tastes best eaten right away.
I’ll leave it up to you whether or not you decide to share.
No judging here.
Not all microwave mug confections are created equal (I’ve tried some pretty bad ones in my day) but I’m a serious fan of this chocolate chip cookie version.
It’s right up there with this decadent Nutella mug cake and this homemade Funfetti vanilla one, and all three variations make me happy that I can have a warm cookie in just minutes.
Really, it’s just a whole lot of chocolate chip cookie comfort in a mug.

60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) melted butter or coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) brown sugar
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup (36 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons (21 g) chocolate chips, regular size or mini
Instructions
- Very lightly coat the inside of a 6- or 8-ounce mug or ramekin with a smidgeon of cooking spray, butter or coconut oil. Mix all the ingredients together in the mug (to avoid the batter being crumbly, mix the butter, egg yolk, sugars and salt first before gradually stirring in the flour and adding the chocolate chips).
- Microwave for one minute at 80% power (I have a 1,000 watt microwave; if your microwave has more or less watts, you may need to adjust the time a bit). The top will look light and yellow and may even seem undercooked but if you gently press the top and it lightly springs back, it’s perfect (don’t overcook or it will be dry and tough in spots).
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Recipe Source: sent to me by a blog reader, Jill (thanks!) – I added the coconut oil option
This was tasty and filled my craving for a cookie. I followed the recipe and had no problems. Texture was fine. Don’t overcook!
I think all the negative comments are people expecting this to literally be a cookie, which is a wild expectation to have from your microwave, lol.
It’s more like a cake consistency, so think of it as a cookie-flavoured-cake. I mixed and cooked it exactly as is in the recipe, but also added a couple drops of vanilla extract and it was excellent!
Yeah dude it’s fine! Gets the job done
Sorry it was horrible and we had to throw it out. Even on decreased power, it was like eating dry cake mix in a lake of melted butter/egg. We also followed the recipe and had these concerns: (1) melting butter with most cookies – not good and (2) no vanilla – no taste. Once all the ingredients were combined and dry it was only going to lead to dry mug cookie. The search continues for a good mug cookie.
not very much flavor and a weird texture
This recipe blows. Don’t waste your time or ingredients on this, just spring for a bit more of both and make the real deal. (Not for nothing but if you think you’re getting away with one yolk and no whites to properly mix that flour, you’re not)
Hahahaha, the comments are ridiculously hilarious. People actually think this is going to turn out like a real cookie?? In my opinion, it’s a fantastic substitute to satisfy a sweet craving when you have all of five minutes to make cookies.
unimpressive but tastes good. definitely best to compensate flavor with extra chocolate chips and a bit more salt.
Pros: fast.
cons: consistency and texture is nothing like a cookie and is honestly unpleasant but the flavor is comparable to a cookie (especially with extra chocolates chips)
Makes your kitchen smell yummy!
be modest with the flour and generous with the butter
I followed this recipe exactly and it turned out perfectly! I make it for my husband on a weekly basis and I find myself sneaking a bite (or four) from the bowl before giving it to him. It’s the perfect consistency and sweetness in only one minute!
The final consistency was awful, I follow the instructions then the result was dry and had no taste
As far as mug cake and cookies go this one is the best I’ve tried. It’s not a “cookie” by any means but tastes amazing and certainly satisfies a chocolate chip cookie craving! Will make a again.
very good, added a but of vanilla extract
Omg omg omg that was amazing. Hit the spot perfectly. I was a little skeptical as I was making it. Even as I pulled it out of the oven I was unsure. But dang…..
i don’t know what other people did – maybe i needed to add vanilla ice cream? but the recipe itself didn’t taste like a cookie at all :/
Mug cookies are inevitably disappointing. This was the least disappointing one I’ve ever tried and it satisfied my craving! I made two at once and the microwave at 100% power for 1:20 was about perfect. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I’m in a good mood
This is the best recipe and is now my period craving – I add vanilla and biscoff
I have never written a recipe review before… and I give this 5 stars. I made a few cookie/brownie in a mug recipes years ago when it was the Pinterest trend. None of those were worth repeating and I was always disappointed. THIS RECIPE DELIVERS AND DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I say that as a cookie snob with high standards. I made the recipe with a few variations based on what I had on hand (mentioned below), before reading any of the other comments. After reading some of the negative comments, I feel obligated to give my positive feedback. Is this “mug cookie” the same as the homemade cookies that I painstakenly bake for Christmas? No. Is this a single serving cookie made in less than 5 minutes in my microwave that satisfies my late night craving? BY GOD, YES IT IS. I am the person who traditionally lets all of my dairy ingredients come to room temperature and rests my dough overnight. But sometimes you want a guilty pleasure with immediate gratification… for the immediate sweet tooth, this is your recipe.
My modifications: 1) a full egg, because I didn’t separate the yolk; 2) one T white sugar and one T honey, because I didn’t have brown sugar; 3) 1/4 cup whole wheat flour to absorb the extra liquid from the full egg + honey. I will add 1/4t vanilla next time (and there will be a next time). I did make sure my microwave was at 80% per the original recipe, and I think that’s important.
To clarify… 1/4 cup whole wheat flour instead of 1/4 cup white flour. Whole wheat flour absorbs more liquid than traditional white flour, which I needed due to the egg whites & honey.
So yummy! Came out perfect
If you follow this recipe, it turns out perfect. Don’t look at all the bad reviews. My family and I are all on the couch eating our own little cookie in a mug. I just made four of them. Each one turned out perfectly.
If your batter is crumbly/dry add a splash of milk to the batter before microwaving it’s. And serve with whip cream. The splash of milk really helps. Please try before leaving a bad review lol. So amazing!!!
I had to try this recipe after you mentioned it in your post about recipes fails and the many comments it has received over the years (such a fun read by the way LOL).. Let me start by saying, I have attempted a couple of other mug cookies (I made your funfetti version years ago and it didn’t turn out for me…baker error I am sure). I made another one last summer. It’s was just so so. I made two of these at the same time since I didn’t want to waste an egg (one for me and one for my husband). One of the mug cookies was better than the other because more egg got in one. I couldn’t tell you which one. All in all, it was tasty but I think I am an actual cookie girl more than a mug cookie BUT this recipe was super fun to make and eat with my toddler. Thanks for having all sorts of recipes on your blog—from fancy to everyday, your cooking/baking style resonated with me.
This was the worst mug cookie I have ever had.
Try adding a bit of vanilla extract and milk, it really helps 🙂
This is our go-to mug recipe…my husband asks for it so often I have it memorized! I always do a double batch (2 mugs) so I don’t have to waste the egg white. Also do 1T butter, 1T coconut oil. I add a splash of vanilla, include an extra pinch of Stumptown-Jacobsen coffee salt, and add a mix of dark chocolate and butterscotch chips. Microwave for 1min, check and then hit it again for another 90sec on high. Bottom line- the recipe is flexible and can handle variations. We’ll keep using it!!!
Eh. I made this and it doesn’t taste as good as it sounds. I did the exact measurements and it was not a liquid consistency whatsoever. Wouldn’t make this recipe again.
Really good!! I subbed out regular flour for oat flour, only used 1 tbsp sugar and it tasted just like a cookie.
look closely at the mug you use- larger, thicker walled mugs cook it differently than a thin walled, lighter (in weight) mug- notice the mug Mel uses- it’s large and wide.
I used the largest widest mug I had (2 cup volume)
And it was perfect! Delicious!!!
I was really craving a chocolate chip cookie but didn’t want to make a whole batch. This was the next best thing. I followed the recipe, but added a little vanilla, it was perfect! So delicious, really satisfied that cookie craving!! I’m very surprised with the comments below because this was super tasty! I will make this again!
We have been trying a different mug cake/cookie recipe every weekend, trying to find our favorite. This by far has been the worst yet. I followed the recipe to a t. It comes out a super weird texture (it’s very off putting). In addition, the flavors are not quite right.
I have to say I’m impressed with the recipe even though I used arrowroot to replaced all purpose flour and 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar i stade of white and brown sugar. It was lovely for a night time craving.
And to Emily down below in the comments, I do know what a proper batter looks like!!!
Incredibly disappointing. I followed the recipe exactly. First off, before I put it in the microwave, the mix was crumbly and dry because there are not enough wet ingredients included in the recipe. Secondly, the whole thing came out wet and soggy and no matter how long I cooked it in the microwave, it was still wet. I am sorely p*ssed and angry because I wanted a quick cookie dessert and instead I ended up wasting ingredients and quality chocolate chips. To anyone who is reading this: DON’T USE THIS RECIPE!!! you will just end up wasting time and money.
Sounds as if you have bigger problems than a cookie recipe. I would recommend therapy coupled with an anger management class.
Incredibly disappointed. Saw so many good reviews and was excited, but this came out terrible. Waste of my time and ingredients. I followed the recipe exactly and it was disgusting. sad.
This was not good, I’m sorry. Even doing wet ingredients first, it was still dry and crumbly. It tastes like hot flour. Definitely need milk and vanilla or something to creamy this up.
I went into this extravaganza with the upmost joy. I came out most disappointed. This recipe was flavorless, except for the mouth full of egg and butter I received while eating it. This desperately needed vanilla, a quintessential flavor in a cookie. This “cookie” was more of a sponge than the main character on show spongebob that my children watch on the tellie. This was absolutely Reevaluating.
Don’t listen to the negative reviews! This was absolutely delicious.
Just follow the recipe and it will turn out perfect, and if it’s a little dry for your taste, add some ice cream on top just like the video.
Sounds like the people who left bad reviews don’t know what a proper batter should look like in the first place – no point in being negative if you haven’t even made it properly.
Oh, and lots of microwaves are different! I suggest popping it in for 10/15 second intervals to avoid overcooking.
Anyway, highly recommend!!
Ummmmm there’s no vanilla? This cookie straight up does not taste good. I’m not picky, but both my husband and I threw this out after two bites. Desperately needs vanilla, otherwise the cookie batter (minus chocolate chips) is just flour and butter flavor.
This was the perfect single serving dessert! Thank you so much Mel. I used another’s suggestion and added a splash of milk rather than an egg yolk. My mug cookie came out dense and cookie dough like — just wonderful.
As I didn’t read the comments my mixture was crumbly so I added 1 tablespoon of apple sauce and it was delicious! Highly recommend.
YUM!, Quick and gooey. Just what I wanted, one chocolate chip cookie and this recipe nailed it.
Oooo this was yummy!! Added a dash of vanilla when mixing the wet ingredients. So gooey and perfect consistency. Definitely a go-to recipe!!
I actually really enjoyed this. A lot of mug brownies or cookies can become really dry or be crumbly when cooked, but mine was the perfect consistency (I put the wet together, and then slowly added the flour, as cookies should be made). However, the portion was a little bit small (a good size for me) but you may want to double it if you’re feeling a little indulgent. I could have appreciated a little less egg in the cookie, but that’s unavoidable, because you can’t really put in a quarter of an egg in a recipe. But overall, the flavor was great (I used dark chocolate chips) and with a little ice cream, it makes quite the treat. I would definitely make it again.
Uhhhhhhhh. No, it was not very good. It was super dry and bland nothing like the picture. But, I am still surprised it made a cookie. 3 stars
I am a cookie fanatic, and this recipe is amazing!! I tried to make it a little healthier by using stevia in place of the granulated sugar and oat flour using the same proportions, and OMG. I also added a splash of vanilla, and basically, this is going to be my new breakfast, lunch, and dinner!!
Yum! I thoroughly enjoyed the texture and flavor of this. Hit the spot when I just wanted a quick and small warm dessert. I will be making this again!
i was looking up recipes for chocolate chip cookie mug cakes and this was the first one. i’m so glad i picked this one because after reading the comments i immediately went down to try it out. i didn’t have any brown sugar so i added a tbsp of honey instead and it tastes great. i also added vanilla like a lot of people were and i definitely recommend.
it’s 5 stars for me!
Well Mel you enticed me into reading these comments today after seeing your insta story (thank you for making my last two hours of a slow work day fly by) so I HAD to make this tonight to evaluate for myself. I had low expectations, but let’s be honest, I’ve never made anything disappointing from your collection, so how bad could it be? I followed the directions EXACTLY, and it should be no surprise that it came out absolutely delicious and the perfect treat! Thank you Mel for another great kitchen success! You’ve never steered me wrong.
It was fine, I added a tiny bit of vanilla and made double the amount in a larger mug. So I don’t know if my outcome would’ve been the same if I had just done the normal amount in a small mug, so I will try again. But it came out super spongy without much flavor. I was hoping for more of a cookie texture but it came out very spongy and bouncy
I’ve heard tales about these comments, finally read them tonight, then headed straight downstairs to try the recipe! It’s quite good! It fulfills the purpose of a microwaved dessert in a mug: fast, easy, tasty. The haters are either trolling or making the recipe wrong. I’ll definitely make this again when the need arises!
For some reason the star rating option doesn’t show up for me anymore, but 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Delicious!
Very easy to make but tastes spongey. Not enjoyable.
